how would you feel about it, if Developers secretly pose as avg community members here on the forum, to help stir up hype on the forum here for their new MMORPG?
Derek Smart, the developer of Line of Defense, and Algalon MMOs post on this forum, but uses his name to do it, which doesnt hide who he is from the pubic here.
But nothing to stop developers like that from not using any identification to the fact they work for a certain big named upcoming MMO,
when they post on this forum. They could even be overhyping the game here on the forum, and most people would see them simply as a normal poster.
Yeah this site gets spammers that kind of give it away that they work for a certain developer. But usually these are indy developers spamming "interest" threads to draw attention to their MMO which lacks notice.
But with a big named MMO with lots of noise, these developers can drive hype without seeming like a spammer here on the forum.
how you feel about this topic at hand?
would you be concerned about Developers hiding in the shadows here on MMORPG.com and other forum sites dedicated to MMO, to hype up their MMO projects without being seen as a developer, or somebody that would profit off the hype?

It doesn't bother me because I look at games and judge them for myself rather than letting others control my mind.
It would however be nice if some of the spotlight posters on this site actually started good threads.
My thought is that "some people" need to start taking responsibility for themselves and using that li'l noggin of theirs.
If someone, anyone, comes to a forum and starts saying that "blah blah" is the best thing since sliced bread, and they have no substantial argument or proof that it is, then the players need to make their own decisons.
However, if a developer were to come to any forum anonymously and point out very solid evidence, with subtantial arguments, about why x game has y and why it will be good, and it's a compelling argument, then who cares?

There are so many fanboys and haters out there already, that honestly, you wouldn't know if they were already there. So really, it would make no difference whatsoever. It would be nice to know that DEVs care enough about their product to do this.. but at the same time, don't they have a marketing department for this type of thing?

I can see some companies do it, but I wouldn't know why they would ever pick MMORPG.com, the ultimate hinterland of the part of the internet devoted to gaming.
im pretty sure its very commoinplace. i would assume any community manager for a game who is half decent at his/her job will hype his/her game through forums such as these. as you state some are very open about it but for every open post im pretty sure theres a dozen or so pretending to be joe public.
how do i feel about it? its just another fanboi really. irrelevant of wethere they work for the company or not. if i agree with them i will applaud and if not i will flame.
If someone is talking in general chat in a language you dont understand, chances are they're not talking to you. So chill out and stop bitching about it!
I dont like overhypeing from any developer...

LOL.
I don't think it's an issue. Hype only pushes the game so far. If anyone decides to buy a game on hype alone have only themselves to blame if they find it turd.
I would consider it smart marketing .... par for the course.
What does it take to start a conspiracy rumor? Exactly one post.
How can you defeat a conspiracy rumor once started? Can't be done, "EvilCorp must be lying to us".
Hence: most games gag-order devs. A few gag-order all but a handful.
Players: why don't GMs talk with us any more?
Because prophets of doom don't ever quit.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
They do, as we all know, and they are blindingly obvious for the most part. A "One-Post Wonder" appears, spouts an obvious piece of blurb from the website and includes lots of pictures and links - these add up to a laughable attempt to make us think they are just your average poster . I despise these people partly because of their ineptitude and partly because the games these inept people design are, when looked at, invariably crap. That's why they pretend to be a forum poster in the first place, in a desperate attempt to drum up some interest..
If anyone posts under their name, fair enough. I'd at least respect them for it, but that said I never pay attention to the names of anyone posting on here in the first place, so I wouldn't recognise a name anyway.
AFAIK they actually do this. Not the developers themselves of course, but viral marketing folk who travel to high traffic forums and drum up their respective titles or disparage their competitors.
I feel it's obnoxious, but as another poster said, it's probably indistinguishable from the usual rants of the fanatics and demagogues. I generally disregard all extreme viewpoints anyway.
This have been a good conversation
Agreed, because really, what good is a UI programmer for things like stealth marketing.
I find these kinds of threads tiresome. Instead of worrying about possible "what if" scenarios (borderline cynicism), we should be focusing on subjects that make us feel less guillty about wasting our time on forums such as these :-)
Cheers!
I don't think it's a good practice but as a person with marketing and advertising background, I could see that happen in any kind of business.
Marketing is marketing, you'll do anything you can to draw more people to your store, website or what ever.
It's true that eventually people will form their own opinion towards your product and no matter what you say is going to change it.
Pretty much this, strength of argument/points made. I don't mind if anyone says why they are enthusiastic about a game and provide some compelling reasons even if it helps their bottom line. It's a question of disseminating useful information vs spreading propaganda.
In fact most devs would be welcome, if they are intelligent and talented enough to be a part of creating an mmorpg, it should be second nature for them to talk usefully to players, and anonymously might just help them avoid unwanted attention, equally.
