Which version to buy?

CurmyCurmy Member UncommonPosts: 18

Long time lurker, first time poster. (hang on, apparently I'm a third time poster. Woops)

Am in the process of convincing my wife that I need GW2. Shouldn't be hard, I bought her a new car.

Assuming she says yes, I have to decide which version to buy. I can buy the digital versions from ANet for between $59.99 and $79.99 USD, which works out about the same with the strong Aussie dollar. The Deluxe Digital version has a couple of limited use items and the Mistfire Wolf Elite skill

On the other hand I could buy it from my local EB Games for $88.00 which, if I pre-order, gives me the headstart and a Hero's Band. Apparently the Hero's Band gives +2 to a bunch of stats.

Basically it comes down to helping the local economy and getting ripped off by EB Games or ordering one of the digital versions.

Assuming I went with EB games, how much use would I get out of an item that granted +2 to various stats?

If I went with the Deluxe Digital, am I going to get much use out of the Mistfire Wolf skill?

i would assume i would get no use out of the items beyond having them as neat collectibles and base my decision from there.

You still get a ring by pre-ordering from Anet. So imo SCREW the middleman and give your money directly to the developers.

the standard purchase that lands at the release date in the retail store, does that not have a DVD and a manual, unlike the pre-purchase?

Damn, so you do. I didn't even notice that.

The ring is +2 to all stats, I believe. Won't make a hell of a lot of difference and you'll have better by or before the end of the first 1-15 zone. If money is tight, get the vanilla version. If you have a bit extra and don't mind the cost of a middle-of-the-road dinner out, go digital deluxe.

Stat gear you get with the box really only matters in the first days you play a MMO, you will find better in the game later.

So the question is if the head start is worth it or not to you?

Items from better versions aren't really that special. Just a little help at beginning and for showing off I guess.

I'm buying regular box version from a shop in my town, cause I love to do it that way. I just wake up, go to shop, take the box from the shelve, buy it and get my excitement up by watching the box all the way home. It worked with legos... now I'm older, it is still awesome ;]

The only version that I believe was worth buying over Standard was the Physical Collector's Edition. And even that is quite subjective.

Between Standard and Digital, I would purchase the standard edition and use the money you saved on things that will actually be useful (character slots, storage, etc.)

"As you read these words, a release is seven days or less away or has just happened within the last seven days— those are now the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria."...Guild Wars 2

Agreed, get the standard edition and spend the difference in gem store on items of your choice.

Just so you know, pre-ordering it digitally gets you the exact same stuff as buying it in the store at Gamestop. The key difference is that you have to actually go pick up the box. Headstart from ordering it directly from NC Soft gives you the same Hero's Band as Gamestop. Digital deluxe gets you the elite skill (which will be nice only until you can unlock a regular elite skill, so 30+) and a mini rytlock pet. The other stuff available in the DD is available in the Gemstore. I personally went with the DD, but looking back and now knowing that you can get the DD in the gemstore later if you want, I would have gone standard.

This is what we did and are doing.  Me and hubby decided we'd rather spend the money on extra character slots etc than on the Mistfire Wolf.
