One Week to go... and NO open Beta.

^_^ <-Happy Face.

Should look more like a troll face, because the subject is so much "I told you so"ish. So many people said just give it time and there will be a time in which you can test out the game without actually paying for it. Doesn't look like its going to be the case.

Going to wait in the sidelines for many many months on this game as it seems to be a mad cash grab initially: Get as many players as possible to dish out money for the game. Not that the game doesn't have it's merits, but I would like to see how the retention is on it a few months down the road. Will people really be playing it as much as they claim they will?

Anyways, back to the point: anyone have theories as to why they are not having an open beta for this obviously much anticipated game?

Its been known for many months there would be no open beta.  Want to play then you gotta pay. Dont like it, dont pay.

Yes I have a theory, because they said they weren't going to have an open beta but BWEs until launch just like they did with the first game? Cmon anybody with half a brain could've guessed that one.

Remember... all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.

I believe they did beta weekend 3. They gave out codes to people other than those that prepurchased, guess you missed out. When it comes to beta keys you got to be alert, they go fast....

I got into BWE3 from this site without paying for the game... so that was about as open beta as you can get, just shows you were too lazy to notice or that you honestly just didn't care.

A while back... ArenaNet said they would never do an Open Beta for Guild Wars 2 just like they never did one for Guild Wars 1. ArenaNet, as far as I remember, doesn't like them because they are perceived as free publicity and they like using beta for its actual purpose and thats to test and break the game.

You never could play the beta unless you pre-purchased or pre-ordered the game. Buying the game is what gets you into the betas that were going on for over a month already.

I've never heard anyone say that there would be free betas. Whoever said there would be free open betas had no idea what they were talking about.

The only other way you could get into the beta would have been if you were selected by ArenaNet, other than that you must buy the game first.

You aren't losing much by buying the game. At least you won't have to dish out money for subscriptions.

You might as well just preorder and get it over with, because you know you will anyhow at some point.

I don't think anyone ever said there would be. I know some people including myself have said they will have a free trial eventually. How long after launch that will be is anyone's guess. If you want to try before you buy you just have to wait.
  • PresbytierPresbytier Member UncommonPosts: 424
Considering the entire games bussiness model is just buying the boxed copy it does seem silly to have expected an open Beta or a free trial period.

    Its B2P.

  • ButregenyoButregenyo Member UncommonPosts: 483

There will be a free trial eventually after launch. Anet takes their beta tests more seriously than most companies. Lots of people do not know what beta is. So becuase of those people that see the beta as free trial, Anet doesnt do open beta. Because their beta doesnt represent the full product. Game is now on heavy load with debug features. They stress the servers as much as possible, making the game sometimes unplayable, intentionally. Some slow minded people may interpret this as "omg so cloze to launch and the game still doeznt workz?!" So if you want open beta just to try out the game, you will have to wait some time.

The game already proved itself to be a success. Just buy it. It is a one time fee.

They also adopted a policy of giving refunds to people who pre-purchased the game if they did not enjoy their BWE experience. It's right in the FAQ on their website, and some people on this very site allegedly took advantage of this.

So it was a no-risk purchase.

As has been said, they told us a long time ago there wouldn't be a traditional open beta.

Saying it's a "mad cash grab" displays that you don't have experience with ANet.

Concerns about retention?  Well, I have faith in them to know what to do.  GW is going on 7 1/2 years old and it still feels as populated as any game.  That is especially true in comparison to the sub games I've played over the past few years.  And, when they put new stuff in to do like they just did this past weekend it still 'booms.'   There's the now cliche comment that applies to retention - it's b2p.  I think a lot of players that quit their sub games would still play a bit or more now and then, but not enough to feel like it's worth paying for.  I know I'd still play the ones I have some.

Thanks much. I drift in and out of the forums lately (a few weeks in between). I am pretty sure I read sometime last year that open beta was going to happen in this game, but either I was mistaken (possible), or what I read was "free trials" after launch, which is also a possibility.

Yep, I will be on the wait and see for a few months. Might not even pick it up honestly, but I will still see how people like/dislike it. From what I read, it just doesn't seem to be up my alley but it's kinda hard to ignore the elephant in the room

I laughed harder at this that I probably should have.  The OP is talking like there was no open beta so gamers don't know what they are getting.  As if Anet is hiding something.

Why no open beta: SIMPLE - they had more than enough beta testers already.  The game didn't need an "open beta (aka free trial)".

If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.

Sorry but you were wrong. They never said there would be free open betas. It's all in your mind bro.

There is no sub fee, people are free to come and go as they please.

Why does it matter to you how much someone plays the game?

I can see if the servers were flat empty that would be a concern, but there are waaaaay too many people coming from Guild Wars 1. They have been playing that one for like what 8 years? I definetely believe they'll stick around for quite some time

Considering that those of us who pre-purchased did it to get into the beta events, screw people who want an open beta.

Change that emote to this: ;/) <-troll face

Ya, that's rright, you are a troll.  Not an "I told you so" deserved because you're doing nothing but saying that the game isn't worth the money people payed for it.  No, I'm not taking your words out of context, I'm taking them on face value:  Troll face value.

Why does retention number matter to you, as a player?   As a player, they mean exactly squat as long as the player is having fun.  As a developer, they certainly matter.  As a troll, they're only used to make more troll-topic threads.

Oh, and this game tries to get many people to purchase the game...probably because this game is "Buy-to-Play", similar to that of single player games.   There's no subscriptions.   They make their money on people actually purchasing the game.

To your question of an Open Beta:

--Because the only tests they've need to do and have done are ones that actually are about testing the game.  Reporting bugs, testing server loads, tweaking login systems, and so on.     They don't need an Open Beta because all those are for are to be demo/free-play for people that "just want to try" but almost never buy the game.  This game is already purchased by those that are 100% sure, and those that aren't sure can go by word-of-mouth or reviews.
