Needing help picking which one. MoP, Rift, or GW2

cdbluecdblue Member Posts: 10

So me and my fiance are saving money so we can get married. The obvious answer to the question I am about to ask is try them all. With money being so tight though that is pretty much impossible. I am on temporary disability due to back surgery that came out of the blue. So I have decided post this on the games we are interested in. Those games are Rift, WoW, and GW2. All of which have expansions coming out. We have to buy two copies of each game and that is beyond our expenses for the moment. We can basically afford one, hence the forum post.

Right now we are playing WoW. We only been back maybe two months. WoW is great game but there is some problems running into. She works midnights and it is impossible for her to raid. PuGs have really gotten bad socially. She decided to make disc priest and honestly wasn’t so hot starting off when it came to instancing. She would tell the group before hand that she had never healed said instance before. Didn’t matter (we only ran three). The last one the tank called her the big “C” word and my fiance got so upset she just dropped group. She is yet to do another. She hardly is playing. Looking for Raid is completely out. She played LoTRO for years so I know she is decent player. Even I who played since Vanilla till mid WoTLK dread PUGS now because it seems if I am not getting cursed out someone else is. I am more thick skinned but she is not.

Out of the three I must say GW2 is the one that raises my eyebrows the most. I know there is no raiding and it seems like the dynamic world is going to be superior to that of Rift. Also I know the gear grind isn't involved as much as the other two. From what I read GW2 seems to be the winner at least to me but I do have some concerns. On WoW there is other things to do other than quest and PvP. I like to do things like archeology, fishing, professions, collect pets/mounts, and farm transmog items. I am not sure if GW2 going to have anything like that. Another big selling point to me is also (perhaps?) a turn off. I missed out on DAoC and really think the idea of server vs server vs server pvp is splendid idea. Yet, I fear its going to become extremely competitive and that guilds are going to require scheduling which is hard for us to do. We hardly have time together as it is. Also I have a worry about the community due to it being a buy it once and never pay sub fee again. I want to stay out of a bad community at all cost but I am already on WoW and far as I am concerned its bad community central anyway. As said though from everything I read GW2 seems great. Sometimes though what you read is a lot different than you get... Example Warhammer....

So I hoping some of you beta GW2 players could help us out here. To those who played GW2 beta, Rift and MOP perhaps could get some comparisons and maybe suggestions which one would be better for us?

BTW she is more PvE player, and likes to solo/duo. Me, I do a little bit of everything as I said.

Again trying them all out is going to be impossible. 60 X 2=120$, 40X2=80$, and 40X2=80 more. 280 dollars is simply out of our range for the moment so do want to hopefully pick the best.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Guild Wars 2.

Me and my girlfriend gonna play togehter in it,I am really she really liked it and we can finally enjoy playing a game togehter,so we will have time for all things.. we both serve in the army so we come home around 18:00 and playing till 22:00,we were playing Leage of Legends which was the best so far for us to play togheter... so I suppose u should try GW2 it will be fun and hey no monlthy fees :)

WoW was a great game 4 years ago.

Rift is quite fun, but gets boring real quick - at least when you got no friends who enjoys it with you.

GW2 feels new and exciting. If you want to PvE theres always open world raids where you can have fun with others, and WvW are dominating all MMOS atm regarding PvP

  • faxnadufaxnadu Member UncommonPosts: 940

you can play both rift and wow free for atleast level 20 you can decide.

wait one month after gw2 is released and see how its going still or starting to fail.

then decide what you gona do ;)

edit : you can also play games like Vanguard for free now.

  • DanitaKusorDanitaKusor Member UncommonPosts: 556

    Right now?

Well it's a bit of a waste starting Rift because you'll never catch up with other players in PvE and PvP, so it would be better waiting till the expansion for that one.

MoP... expect more of the same as in the current game.  Similar questing and dungeons but with a new story.  Not much will change.  Those that like WoW now will like MoP, those sick of WoW or have never liked WoW won't be enticed back by it.

GW2... well I can't tell if you will like it or not.  I know people from my old WoW guild that won't touch it because there are no tanks or healers and raids at endgame.  I suspect a lot of wow players will try it, find it doesn't suit them and move back to WoW like they always do.  It is a very nice game though, especially if you are more of a solo player like me (which most people are).

One thing to consider is how long do you plan on playing these games?

GW2 will cost you $120, but that's it you don't need to spend any more.

MoP will cost you $80, but then you have to consider the sub fee as well.

The same with rift, it's cheap now, but you will need the expansion when it comes out plus the sub fee between now and then.

Guild Wars 2 has no monthly fee, so i you can play Gw2 AND another game.

So it´s your choice between RIFT and WoW.

You ve opened the same topic at GW2, WoW, Rift forums. Lol got confused.

Anyways i wrote on the rifts forums.

Also SWTOR going f2p just for an alternative if u play GW2 and miss raids.

PS: i don't like SWTOR but it is just an alternative :)

I have been seduced by GW 2. I can't deny it. The money you save on subs between now and the wedding will pay for the flowers or the cake too!
  • cdbluecdblue Member Posts: 10
I did :) I expected more pro WoW crowd on WoW, Rift on Rift, GW2 on GW2. I won't miss scheduled raiding. Once I am back to work my time going to be limited. I work days, she works nights, so time is going to be very small for together time.
  • MorpheusMJWMorpheusMJW Member Posts: 27

Being objective, Guild Wars 2 is your choice.

If your g/f can't do raids, thats all Rift has to offer. The gear progression is actually quite nice in Rift if you like raiding, but thats all there is to do. The PvP is considered a joke and has most of its subs just for raids.

WoW is an option but if your struggling for money, $15 a month on an mmo hurts.

When I was struggling for money and I had the choice of GW1 and WoW, I bought GW1 and played it on and off for 7 years, it works out as a good investment. The same will be for GW2.

I don't even need to bash any game. If your struggling for money paying for just the box rather than a monthly subscription is best.

Mini pets exist in the game and you can duel them. Not sure how complex the system is but i've seen videos of it. I believe they have mentioned adding fishing (like housing) later in the game but not at launch and judging by how fast their updates have been it would definitely be soon. they have pleanty of crafting already available at launch for crafters to enjoy.

Despite some of the odd folks on these forums i think you'll find most players in GW2 are more mature crowd. It seems to attract a mature crowd much like most of the servers on LOTRO do because of the type of content and the attention to detail. I've played LOTRO for years, still do, and i can tell her this game is far superior.

Being an avid PVE fan myself, this game rocks the pve content. Nothing is every not happening in the area. I went back to WoW tonight to take pictures of places i've been for nostalgia purposes before my account runs out. I was astonished at just how dead WoW's world felt after playing 5 hours of GW2 testing today. And I was only in the beginner areas. I can't imagine how alive the more complex higher level zones will be with the meta chain events in those areas being far superior then the starter zones.

Being in a situation, my really good friend actually bought the game for me but since i'm the penny pincher type i can tell you that you would most likely get the real content from either Rift or GW2 for the money you are spending. I like Rift i think the Devs there are the most awesome devs in any subscription based mmo teams out there, but their game is just too simplistic for me. I want a game that more realistic and more of a story. What they put out with their rifts just really fell short for me and that's why i stopped playing. It was a little bit more advanced WoW but not enough to make the difference. Since seeing GW2 in action, I am really excited for it because it seems more alive, more active then the rest of the games i've played and most importantly there isn't the rush to the end feel you get from the other titles. All of the content isn't focused just for level 80 so there really isn't this worry of getting there and standing around waiting for groups all day. The content is spread out.

Aerowyn has many a video linked in one of her threads so i would suggest checking it out for features listings.

Its all about the graphics, all of those 3 are basically the same game with different textures. Your choise. As for long time game maybe GW2 since there is no monthly fee.

GW2 has crafting, platforming and minigames. According to ANet, it's possible to reach lvl 80 without killing a thing.

Big sieges will probably require scheduling. However, WvW has plenty of content for smaller groups of 3 or more players, such as taking smaller camps. You can even do things solo, although that's not as efficient and if you're in a decent guild, forming a group of five shouldn't pose a problem.

GW2 will probably attract some kids who don't want to pay monthly. On ther other hand, it'll also attract adult players who don't have the time to grind or don't play enough to justify playin monthly. In the end, I don't think GW2's community will be much better or worse than those of other MMOs.

I haven't played enough WoW or Rift to say much about them, but GW2 seems to be cheaper and less grindy than those two. Sounds like that's what you want, right?

Hands down GW2. No monthly sub cost. The game is aesthetically pleasing - I don't know about your gf, but it was a major thing for my gf. Easy to play together: no longer: "oh I shouldn't play, my mates are not online I will get too far ahead of them". Dynamic combat system and player involvment in the combat. Exploration is rewarding, you no longer have to worry about picking up quests from a quest hub.

Obviously GW2 is you want to save money by not paying $15 a month and still play an MMO. Though MoP is looking like it will have tons to do and be worth the $40 + $15 a month.

Unfortunatly I find Rift to be an awful MMO, but the expansion is looking pretty great.

It's really up to your tastes and what you expect to get out of the game. Personally I'd play both WoW and GW2, and with all the new end game content of MoP your fiance won't have to deal with the internet trash in raid PUGs.

Also, if you and your fiance are interested in PVE story based content then I'd suggest Final Fantasy XI and XIV 2.0. FFXI has tons and tons of content with amazing stories and a pretty great community, and an expantion on its way.  I's cheeper subs too.

The FFXI and XIV communities are mostly mature adults, unlike the majority of other MMO's who are infested with mostly middle schoolers.

Based on what you said about your soon to be other half - let's cut to the chase here....

The cooperative play supported, encouraged and innevitable in the design and operation of GW2 will leave her with a smile on her face - no griefing, no insults, no kill or node stealing and nearly everyone up for ressing you after you go down.

It's a far cry from the WoW community which since it's inception has been mired in the old paradigm of MMOs where ungrouped players compete against you on every level and the kind of 'child from a broken home attitude and language' and 'gear/experience/class build leetism' which makes such things an unfortunate fact of MMO life.

Sounds like neither of you will be sorry to see it's absence in GW2 - same as me.

  • JagaridJagarid Member UncommonPosts: 415

As you say money is tight the only choice is GW2...no monthly sub. Worst case scenerio, you get bored with it and you buy one of the others in a few months with the money you saved by not paying subs.I like all three games you mentioned but play none of them because of the subs. GW2 is, imo, the best of the three even if don't factor in the no-sub benefit.

  • VolkmarVolkmar Member UncommonPosts: 2,501

First of all, wise move putting this thread on all three forums.

Clearly, you are correct, pro WoW should come from WoW forums etc. This being the GW2 forum, clearly I would advise you to play GW2.

    1) No subscription. As you need the money for your wedding (Congrats! by the way! :D) with GW2 you just pay the box.

    2) as you already possess WoW, if you later want to try MoP you can, by just paying same subscription you pay now + cost of the mop expansion that you can hopefully afford later on.

    3) I also play with my wife and we were looking forward to MoP but we too had trouble in WoW recently. Ironically, I am the one that cannot stand PUGs, mostly because I usually play tank and feel it is my Duty to lead them as safely as possible and with a PUG that just does no happen most of the time... albeit Heroic Dungeons pugs have been much better in my experience. That being said, once we tried GW2, we were sold. It is such an immersive beautiful world where you can just go prancing wherever you like and have fun all the way :D Also EVENTS ARE AWESOME! yes, that deserve the all capital.

    4) Guild Wars 2 might not have fishing/archaelogy etc but they have mini-games, called Activities. There are some 35 planned, but it is unknown how many will be available at release, so far we have seen just one in action, called Keg Brawl, that works a bit like blood bowl.. basically a mix of american football and... fighting. These mini games are quite involved and can have all sorts of rewards, achievements and other things related to them. Oh! right, there is actually another mini-game available. RC golem. A very simple 1 or 2 player golem chess kind of game.

Anyway the point is: GW2 has side activities as well.

    5) The community. Now this is impossible to say right now, but the game is designed so the community will not bother you, at least in Pve: no kill stealing, no node stealing, all can and will rezz you etc. I'm not sure about PvP... but here is the kicker. The Servers will ventually get balanced to their own level. So if you pick a server with a poor PvP community, you can be sure they will also fight against other poor PvP communities (after getting steamrolled a dozen times in WvWvW of course).

Here is a link to a nice post on guildwars2 guru with some communities and where they are going:

    http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/32389-world-choice-guilds-and-communities/

You might notice a certain Rift-less quality to my post, that is because I have barely played Rift so I cannot really advise on that one.

    Hope this helped a little.

This is actually the key of bying game decision. Your fiance was called the "C" word because of one simple thing: community DEMANDS from priest to heal and to be strictly "Holly" specialized in PvE. So, no "discipline" or "shadow" specialized priest is welcome.

First thing First, Guild Wars 2 removed the gameplay mechanic some like to call "Holly Trinity". It consist of having only 3 class roles, that being "the Healer" "the Tank" and "the Damage Dealer". Which leads to the point that particullar class is limited to one specific build, for the player to be able to stay in pair with other PvE players. No matter how many want you to believe, this is also dramatically bad to the community. It results in a long waiting for particular roles, and encourages using LFG tools that severelly damages socialization aspect among the players. So, mark my words, "Holly trinity" is BAD, it doesnt have to do anything with strategy or tactics, it just more damages than it helps.

Second thing, gear progression is present in Guild Wars 2 , but not to extreme extent as in WoW. You have only "Legendaries" and "Legendaries" as they are. You willl never have the "Tier 2" Epic that is 60% stronger in stats than "Tier 1". In WoW, this came to the point of implementing Gear Score which encouraged Elitist behaviour of "Geared Players", as they started to expell players, who have 5999 GS out of "required" 6000, from raid. Look at the gear as you look it in some other SP RPG or some other Old-School MMORPG. It is there as a "cosmetic achievement" or as a witness that you done X Dungeon. That being said, the gear is NOT purelly cosmetic, but not relevant for "higher tier" dungeon either, because there is none of them.

Hope this clarified more to you and also hope to see you on Saturday (if you make you decision to purchase GW2, ofcourse).

Main MMO at the moment: Guild Wars 2
    Waiting for: Pathfinder Online

MoP... hands down... more content than GW2 and WoW may be old but its still better. Women like WoW better and with the new pet combat system she would be happier there.  That is my professional, good tasted opinion for free. Brownie points with the Fiance incoming if you listen to me... Epic fail if you choose either of the other two.

If money and time really are the main issues, I would go with GW2 for a lot of reasons it was allready stated. If you want most options and different things to do, just go with MoP.

Lol, Raiding is all Rift has to offer. My wife and I don t raid, and we ve got a ton to do at end game. More then any game out. The PvP is actually alot of fun, this is from someone playing it. Can t comment on WoW now, haven t played it in years.

GW2 is a decent game, it s a great game to play along with another as a second game. The WvW is the only thing I think is worth the box price, but this is my opinion.

If I had to make this decision for myself, it would be Rift and GW2 for my downtimes.

Go with MOP. New MMOS come with their own set of problems so i suggest wait for few month before you get GW2. This last stress test was way too buggy so if you want a better and smoother experince go with MOP.

    Guild Wars 2

Its a great game and much better than WoW or Rift (i played both, and played WoW since vanilla for a long time). Whats even better is that it has plug-and-play game style. You dont have to come in when other 24 people come in and stay for 4 hour event, you can join any time, leave any time. World is a living being, where something is happening every moment, every moment lots of quests all around the world need your help, just join in and do them. Or do whatever you want - there is a LOT to do in GW2. Really a lot.

Plus no monthy fee. No real milking of money from you by micro transactions either - all the stuff in shop isnt really required to play, and there is no "grind" to avoid with "boosts" because the whole game IS the endgame, you never really "grind" levels because well, there is no point, you can enjoy full game from level one! You can spend money on this one at the rate you want to spend it, so it definetly wins money-wise too.

Also, very nice aspect of GW2 is that you can join your friends and adventure together no matter what levels you are. In WoW if you are different levels, you cant really play together since one will greatly outlevel the content and will just oneshot everything and other will get little xp for being in group with highlevel etc etc. In GW2 you get scaled down, so higher level can join lower level in their locations, and since quests are not like 1-time WoW quests, but dynamic events, you can enjoy questing together even if you already completed that event (you can do it again!), and often you would find out you never saw this event in that zone, so you wont be like "okay i'll play with you but i did this already", chances are you'll see something new.

However, to be objective, both WoW and Rift offer free trials up to level X, so you can definetly try that. However if your fiance already is against WoW (trust me, expansion will change nothing in the points you pointed out, that being raid-centric endgame and PUGs), your real choice is Rift... try it and see for yourself. You can no longer try GW2 unfortunately now that it's almost launched.

If you haven't been playing WoW for long, MoP will probably provide you with the most content. If you have played WoW for a while and it begins to feel stale, GW2 will provide you with an experience that actually feels genuinly fresh. It also mimimizes those 'community situations' you described through its cooperative design.

WvW is not a game of individual competition, it's all about organization and coordination of groups. You're not going to enjoy it if you run solo, but it makes it easy to team up with others.

TL;DR: New to MMOs ->MoP, bored of those MMOs -> GW2

Don't have first hand experience with Rift, hence no comment.
