There where 2 new choices in the graphics settings menu, one was background blure and the other was..something wih background texture size.
They lowered my FPS with 25%, so they must do somehting nice, just didnt seem to notice it, was allready with all settings maxed out, dropped from 55 to 42 average at HD resolution.
With my system this means that max settings are actually quite taxing-

The Deep Web is sca-ry.
Lucky you. I am getting 20fps at max settings. But its actually very playable.
Anyway - fps were bit lower due to stress test

I run the game full setting at around 60 - 90 FPS while recording @ 30 FPS
Honestly I noticed no difference when I turned shadows off. Only that it gave me a 15 - 20 FPS boost.

Nope. There were 4 new graphic options during this stress test.
2 Dropdown menu options:
View Distance - How far do you have to be for items to fade away
LOD Distance - How far do you have to be for an object to change the texture/detail it is using
2 Checkboxes:
Best Texture Filtering - Better texture filtering?
Blurring of background, I can't remember the name.
All 4 options offer better speed if used correctly, the dropdown made the game playable at higher settings, when I set them both on Low, the only reason I was having performance drops was the far view distance they used in the game, now that I can tweak it, I can run the game on higher settings easily.
The 2 checkboxes didn't have any impact on performance for me, I don't know why. The Background blur gives a "stylized graphic look for distant objects, making them look like 2D artwork (the same with Guild Wars 1) and when you go closer they "transform" into proper 3D objects.

There was a View distance option? I spend on this menu some time and didn't see it o_O
best texture filtering is just AF and makes a big difference in some places.
I miss DAoC
FINALLY THERE IS! 4 days before headstart Arenanet decided to add one of the most important Graphic options for a game which such a large world (and enormous viewing distance)

No, there was just options to change far away objects to a stylyzed rendering and the draw distance for objects. On my machine the effect was barely noticable both in looks and performance.
There is still no view distance option in the usual sense.
There was a view distance option ranging "low - medium - high"
The stylized rendering makes distant objects (beyond the view distance option) look 2D

Dammit, I should have taken a screenshot. I'm almost certain that option was only for the draw distance of objects in the world, but not for general draw distance (like terrain).
I tested all sliders to compare performance impact, and don't remember finding one that would change terrain draw distance.
Now that you mention it I'm not quite sure if it affects terrain, damn they removed -useoldlauncher and can't test it anymore. But terrain shouldn't make much of a difference anyway, it's the objects that are more GPU intensive, I had a performance boost setting both View Distance and LOD Distance at low, which allowed me to set the rest of the graphics higher.

OMG OMG OMG! Finally a draw distance option
This was THE only thing i was worried about; performance, which in BWE hovered around 25fps in populated areas. Maybe now i can crank out 30+ fps minimum!

Lack of DX 11 in this game is rediculous.
Can't believe they skimped on that. It's 2012 fand we get DX 9 only. Not the end of the world but really poor reflection on Arenanet imo.

Gonna be nice when I get to upgrading my comp.
It's too sucky for any of that now

Pretty sure they kept DX9 for now because the majority of people are still using it. I heard ANet say this in a video some where, can't quite remember where though.
They also said they will be looking at ways to implement it in future patchs, so fingers crossed for both of us that they do implement it.
