Is anyone who hasn't already purchased one of those games going to pass on GW2 to get a discount game at a discount price now? I don't think so.
I will admit, I have bought some some games at $10-$15 I would never have boguth otherwise, but often I never actually get around to playing the "deal of a game" grabbed and it sits on my shelf unopened, in case I ever get bored enough to crack it open and do an install.
Some people may grab one of these deals to stick on a shelf as a back up discount gaming plan, but since these games have subscriptions fees, most people aren't going to break the seal until they know there is nothing else better to play for the next 30 days.
Also, these deals do nothing for their remaining subscribers. I think I'd be more worried about how many subscribers they may lose to GW2, than how many stragglers considering buying GW2 they may pick off with a deeply discounted bo price!
I think as a subscriber to one of these games, the discount in reaction to the GW2 release would just be a warning sign that the game's publisher is very worried about what GW2 may do to their player population.

I feel that way too, and the problem is compounded by a sub that I know I'll have to go through and really, I don't want the hassle for a few years after dealing with WoW for so long.. otherwise, I might have bought Tera.

Yeah how will we ever live with being segregated from all of the other elitist jerks? In a month, no one's going to care.
Except people like you who have nothing better to do than post little shots like those. Maybe you should try getting over yourself before you get over us.

A few things....
The 'reputation' you refer to I see as a rather desperately applied label coming from those who don't believe GW2 will succeed or in some cases don't want GW2 t succeed. I don't really understand the logic behind the extreme nature of some of the flaming and naysaying - but there we go.
Secondly - no company deliberately reduces it's per-unit price on it's primary revenue stream so precipitously and with such precision if they don't feel the status quo is threatened. They don't change the nature of their revenue streams like subs unless they are threatened or sub-optimal either....
Fans of GW2 commenting on these multiple and painfully obvious 'coincidences' is a natural reaction. I don't necessarily think it is useful - the facts speak loudly and clearly for themselves - but I understand it.
Trying to bedunk these observations with the kind of comment you posted is also a natural reaction - one which flows from another predictable bias which does'nt really need mentioning does it?
These companies are clearly deeply concerned and are eyeing their Q3&4 predictions with increasing discomfort. If they thought GW2 was just the next bump on the standard MMO treadmill this would not be occurring. It may be that they have nothing to worry about and the game will die as a few vocal individuals are claiming, but they are not taking any chances it would seem.
Further to that - it is interesting to note that the very companies in the same market, who have a better understanding of the financial dynamics of that market than nearly any gamer are reacting in this way. The bean counters and marketting teams at Blizzard et al are obviously worried, and it is GW2 that has them worried.
That should be clear to anyone - regardless of what they think about the validity of that concern....
Tera can be sold for 4.99$ and I wouldn't buy it...
Also, wow can give me mop for free with a pony which glows in rainbow colors to my account and a free yearly subscription, and I still would't log back in... Enough is enough
So I couldn't care less of those "offers" and "sales" since I'll be deeply in gw2 starting with saturday.

A REALLY nice coincidence is that Madden also releases on the 28th. This means GameStop (at least around here) is having a midnight launch where you'll also be able to get GW2. (I'll be getting my CE... woohoo!)

I don't agree. Most that appear to not want or believe the game will succeed attack the game not the community. The community reputation is well deserved due to the way some have been acting and it is incredibly popular so you're going to have more of all types. Also, Anet pushed the whole viral marketing aspect so of course for those that don't care for the game they're going to find it all the more annoying.
Now having said that I don't see or agree with commenting in that fashion relative to this topic. While I'm not real enthused by some in this community either I don't see the harm in this topic and bringing the subject matter up in this thread really feels like someone is just trying to take a pot shot or pick a fight.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
WoW is having a discount that ends of the 28th too.
Oh but I'm sure it's just a coincidence.
LOL surely a coincidence.
There was a thread on the WoW forum about the WoW sale, and I just brought up how obvious it was that they are doing this in response to GW2's release. I was summarily called a fanboy and informed that WoW always does this prior to an expansion release, and the dates were "completely random."
No, I think the discounts are just to entice players to Tera.
It is a niche game and so it's not going to really have a huge playerbase. On top of that the game really was more a proof of concept game as it's set up as a traditional quest grinder but there wasn't a lot of end game at launch. Coupled with fast leveling it means that many players will quickly make it to cap and wonder what to do.
I say this as a Tera player as well as Tera being my "main game".
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I'd say it's just the current movement in the MMO world right now. If GW2 wasn't coming out, the fact that so many different games is doing so much on the same day would have prompted a younger game like Tera to do the same thing regardless.
GW2's impact only makes the issue larger.
For my money, I'll be maintaning my Tera sub while playing both it and GW2. My only issues with Tera is losing track of time while playing and my time to play is always limited now.

Hmmm, I don't know. The GW2 posters always came across to me as a good crowd, unless an unruly naysayer came to the forums and fired them up, just for the sake of being a jerk. Just my 2 cents.

Oderint, dum metuant.
Actually it is the opposite, ANet knew about all these launch dates, so that's why they are releasing GW2 on the 28th... ANet is evil!!!
Nevermind, I'll see you in Queensdale and Divinity's Reach!

GW2 will bore the hell out of a lot of now overhyped people approximately by September 3rd.
After that most people will return to other games.
LOL surely a coincidence.
