Naming questions - part 2

teakinatorteakinator Member Posts: 14

Hi everyone,

I have been reading the blog about how naming will work in GW2 and I am looking for a sanitiy check that I understand.  As I understand, the following are the name rules:

  1. Characters can have one name (if available) up to 16 characters.
  2. Characters can have up to two names (if available) that when combined are not more than 16 characters. Does this mean that it is just one box that can hold 16 characters or is it actually two name fields?
  3. GW1 players can reserve their name if they (1) have a active GW1 account, (2) link their GW1 account to their GW2 account, and (3) log in to GW2 on the first day to claim the name. If they fail any of these steps they lose the name.
  4. if I want the name "Vixen" (as an example) and I log into GW2 during the headstart, I can have the name if no GW1 player did step 3 or must I wait until August 28 for the name or perhaps even August 29 if they tried step 3 but didn't login on the first day as required by the rules.
  5. Regardless of the answer to above question, if I can't have Vixen as a single name, could I be Vixen Sworddancer?  In otherwords, can you just take a last name on and have the same first name as someone else?
  6. how about last names? Can two characters have the same last name? Vixen Sworddancer and Tixen Sworddancer?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on how the naming convention will handled.

last name doesnt matter -- they are not unique to other players

worth noting if you want to save names and work on character looks

any name you create and delete -- is still saved for you for 24hrs

    5.  Yes you can have the same first name as long as it has another name (ie...last name) and the entire name you use hasn't already been taken.

    6.  Yes you can have the same last name as long as both (or all) names are different from anyone else.

First of all you wont have to worry about a name like "vixen" being taken because of gw 1 players reserving it, In GW they always required you to have a space in your name so a name like "vixen" would be invalid if you wanted it to just be that you would have to do something around the lines of "x Vixen x" something along those lines, or just add a last name. There are no fields for last name first name so as long as your full name is unique your fine.

As far as I tested it, there are 16 characters in 1 field. you fill it: allowed are blanks, but every first character after a blank is capitalized.

e.g Joe Da Great does work and does not compete with any other Joe. So there is no 1st name practically, its just one global unique string. But you bet, that just "Joe" is already reserved.

If VIxen is taken you can be Vixen Sworddancer, as long as nobody else is Vixen Sworddancer. You can also have Tixen Sworddancer, again, as long as it's not in use. Or Ixen, Bixen, Fixen, all with Sworddancer, provided they aren't in use also.

    1. its actually 19 characters, not 16

    2. you can have more than 2 words in a name.. basically you can have I L O V E Y O U if you want

    3. you also had to log in prior to July 31st sometime in 2012 to save the name.

    4. you would have to wait until Anet says they opened the names up.. it may not be aug 29th, they said I believe it was "soon after lauch" so it could possibly be 3 days after launch the name is opened up.. who knows

    5. Or I Am Vixen or w/e you like

    6. yup

What? I expect,  that on Aug 25th they check all names, i try to use, against this GW1 list. BTW, I myself have no GW1 reservation.

    1. Characters can have one name (if available) up to 16 characters. Up to 19 characters, regional letters such as ä ö are also allowed.
    2. Characters can have up to two names (if available) that when combined are not more than 16 characters. Does this mean that it is just one box that can hold 16 characters or is it actually two name fields? One field that has max 19 characters, space is counted as one character. The number of names is not limited, as long as it fits within 19 characters including spaces. You can have multiple spaces in one name, example: "Eve Of Denravi Bay" would be a valid name.
    3. GW1 players can reserve their name if they (1) have a active GW1 account = logged in between 01.01.2012-31.07.2012, (2) link their GW1 account to their GW2 account Correct, and (3) log in to GW2 on the first day to claim the name Before 29th August I believe. If they fail any of these steps they lose the name Correct.
    4. if I want the name "Vixen" (as an example) and I log into GW2 during the headstart, I can have the name if no GW1 player did step 3 GW1 names MUST be two or more words, so all one word names are up for grabs or must I wait until August 28 for the name or perhaps even August 29 if they tried step 3 but didn't login on the first day as required by the rules. With more than one word names, yes.
    5. Regardless of the answer to above question, if I can't have Vixen as a single name, could I be Vixen Sworddancer?  In otherwords, can you just take a last name on and have the same first name as someone else? Yes. As long as a name is unique as a whole.
    6. how about last names? Can two characters have the same last name? Vixen Sworddancer and Tixen Sworddancer? Entire name is only one field in their database, and you can't have two of these fields with identical content, that's the simplest way to put it. As long as your name differs by at least one character from the other name, it's unique and thus allowed.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on how the naming convention will handled.

Thank you for this, I had the same questions as well, considering that its very different allowing you to have a First Name and Last Name.

Life is a Maze, so make sure you bring your GPS incase you get lost in it.

    Glad I could help. =)

Ask away if you have any more questions remaining, there's a good chance I'll know the answers.

Thanks everyone for the great information!

I do have a follow-up question on race and classes--- is it true that you can be any class with any race? If yes, if a ranger is a Nora and goes in to shapeshifting form can he still use his bow?

    Thanks in advance!
