Is my laptop running too hot?

MageickMageick Member UncommonPosts: 102

Hey all,

I just purchased a new laptop and during a stress test of GW2 I noticed my laptop was getting pretty warm. So I downloaded a program, "Core Temp".

While playing GW2 my temp would jump up to around 70-80c

Now my question is, is it dangerous for my computer to play around this temp or will my laptop be able to handle the heat?

Without knowing what exact CPU is inside your laptop no one can give you a solid answer.

Generally that temp seems about right on most modern laptops now.  It is nice to keep your CPU under 80, but a lot of them can withstand up to around 100 before it will ruin the chip.

I dont mind the heat just wondering if it can harm my laptop. guess i should get a cooling pad though =P

The temps are acceptable and you do not need to have a cooling pad for those temps.

A cooling pad is a good idea though to help keep temps down if they do approach the critical range, but more importantly it helps prevent people from accidently blocking the vents on a laptop.

I've noticed GW2 ran very hot on many systems just watch it and if you gotta log now and then to cool it down dont take chances.

Lots of temp programs give different results. If your chip is intel based the only one you want to be using is RealTemp.

Anyway, on both programs, it shows you the TJ Max for your chip; Thermal Junction Maximum. The TJ max is the maximum your chip can go to without the risk of damage. It's usualy between 100-120.

Generally, whether overclocking or not, you want your CPU to run at least 20 degrees lower than the TJ Max so it doesn't shorten it's life span. In RealTemp, if the 'Distance to TJ Max' is 20 or more you are fine.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Nowdays CPU's should shutdown/restart if harmful temperature is reached. Cooling pads are option only if your laptop is in need for more stable performance. Intel i7 for example can work normaly till 93c.
