I am at a loss! There just seem to be sooo many different games that it'd be a nightmare trying every one. If I tell you what I like, can you try and recommend a game that you feel might be the one for me please? Believe it or not, I have been playing Toon Town with my young niece today and it seems to have quite a few things that I'm looking for, but I'd like a bit more of a grown up game LOL!
Basically, I prefer to be able to design my own character (the more, the better) . I love:
Earning money by completing tasks etc.
Being able to go to shops and spend that money on clothes etc!!
Being able to build/decorate/enhance my own land/house etc.
Some sort of ranking so I can see my progression.
Not bothered either way with fighting, I don't mind a bit actually (Well I like it in Toon Town anyway LOL) as long as it's not constant or really difficult!
Mini - games inside the game is a bonus.
Um, there's probably more but I can't think what... Oh yeah, if you have to pay I'd prefer ones with a free trial if possible and ones costing no more than around £5-7 a month too please!
Any suggestions? I've been lurking for a little while but can't get myself going iykwim!
Thanks everyone xxx

Id have to reccomend SWG, its still buggy (after 2 years+) but it offers everything you want and if you have a creative mind a hell of alot more aswell. Tons of cloths, rare items to decorate your house with etc, I think youd enjoy it. Oh, and some damn good character customization as well - not sure if there is a trial about at the moment, and if I had to give you one piece of advice it would be to stay away from the jedi forums and join the starsider server.

I've never tried it but isn't Second Life that type of game ?
Not sure if there is any combat though
Failing that the only one I have played which might cover most of your desire list is EQ2.
Id have to say Swg, Wow, Saga of Ryzom( but doesnt have much for quest yet kind of got to keep yourself busy but still a good game), and EQ2. I would say second life or there but the problem is, is that most of the content you have to create( those two are a glorified developers game in a sense.) or use the ingame money to buy from a player. I put eq2 last due to the face to really get to all the content you are forced to be in a guild which I dont like. In my opinion you shouldnt be required to be in a guild to access the content.
On a side note if you are a causal player, meaning you play an hour or so a day. Then I would suggest Wow. Its very well designed for the causal player.
Playing Fallen Earth.
Hmm don't murder me for saying this but the sims?
Puzzle Pirates seems to meet your specifications. Give it a try, don't just look at the screenshots. Play it for an hour or two and you'll realise it's really good.
Maybe A Tale in the Desert?
Second Life, Sims could also be nice. There is a game in developpment that happen in a remoted station where every player need to work together, might be interesting for what you are looking as well.
Stay far from WoW, EQ, EQ2, SoR...those games are not really oriented in the way you desire...they have a little of it, but so little...
CoH could be fun but beside the initial cloths and the extra costume you get every X levels, you will see the customisations events FAR between each other...yet...the costumes are GREAT!

I'd say Star Wars: Galaxies. While I don't really enjoy the combat or skill system of that game, it has a lot going for it in terms of alternative gameplay. Dancers gain experience by dancing, musicians gain experience by playing music, medics get experience by healing people, you get the idea. The crafting system is as deep as any that's been released, though it took a fairly big hit when the "combat upgrade" came out (crafters apparently get knocked off their bikes and killed by just about anything these days). There's a huuuuge catalogue of clothing that can be made, and a wide variety of colors it can be made in. SWG's character creation is the absolute cream of the crop in terms of appearance (though character statistical manipulation of things like skills and attributes isn't terribly detailed).
In any MMO, however, a lot of the "fun" in the game is going to be heavily affected by finding the right group of people to spend time with. When I played SWG (I was a Dancer/Pikewoman- yay for being different!), the cantinas were absolutely overflowing with bots, and I don't mean droids. It was a lonely experience compared to what it was in the first few weeks. I found a great group of people, however, we built a town, and eventually started having a cantina night where everyone would get together and tell stories, chat, etc. If I'd spent the whole game in an NPC city cantina, I'd have advanced much quicker, but I definitely would have cancelled my subscription quicker, too.
For the things you mentioned, SWG really does seem like the best fit, at least for awhile. The entertainer professions are really something different, and it's fun getting to know them. There's even an Image Designer profession that lets you change your appearance and the appearance of others. Eventually, the thrill sort of wore off when my friends drifted away, the game kept changing radically, and a whole list of other things occurred that don't really matter for this conversation. Regardless of my feelings toward SWG and its staff, it excels at providing visual customization, playstyle options, and even quite a bit of personal property to decorate. It's certainly worth a try.
Most "mature" mmo's are very time consuming. I don't know if you want that, most girls I know don't. World of Warcraft is good if you don't want to spend 6+ hours a day to really get somewhere. It doesn't have housing though, but the armor/cloth variety is great. Quests are one of the best way's to earn great things in this game. Auction house offers alot of cloths and items that are made by players or found by them.
It has alot of combat but it's not very hard, and it's fast. Combat is something you will have to get used to if you want a mature mmo. It's more expensive than you want, but I'm afraid the others aren't cheaper either.
It doesn't have a real trail. You can get 14 days for free by using a friend pass that players who have bought the collectors edition or later versions of the game can give away.
If you want housing I would suggest EQ2 and SWG. These games are not casual friendly. SWG has better housing than most games out there. But I would only suggest SWG if you have much time and are into Star wars. The armor/cloth variety is good.
EQ2 is the most money consuming game out there. Every extra thing the release for the game is charged for. The housing isn't proper, since it's all instanced and all players walk into the same door to get to their apartment. Population is very low too. Customisation is very good, but armor/cloth variety isn't the best. Most stuff looks the same.

Based on all the things that you ask for in a more adult oriented game, only ONE game comes to mind that has EVERYTHING that you ask for...

Starsider? I was on Starsider lol-I hated that server
but my suggestion is the realm online. The community has (or had) weekly conytests for new clothes. You can customize your clothes and the combat is easy.
You get a house, but decorating it is a bit limited by the kinds of armor/weapons you can put in it.
