I played Wurm for a number of weeks.  I was interested because it was a java based game and because players cans impact the game world.  Both are interesting concepts, but at the end of the day the game is not very fun.

It's impressive to see a 3-D engine written in Java.  The performance is very (VERY) bad, however.  True enough the game is still in development and the engine will likely be tuned, but relative to other 3-D games the performance is horrible.

I run a dual monitor setup: gforce fx5900 card with 1600x1200 and 1280x1024 displays.  I can run call of duty at 1600x1200 with all the eye-candy turned on, with the second monitor on and it's liquid smooth.  If i turn Wurm to 1600x1200, fullscreen, eye-candy on, and leave my other monitor running the frame rate read 0-2 FPS!  No joke.

To it's credit, the game does put forth some interesting concepts.  The biggest is that the world can be impacted by the players.  If you cut down all the trees, guess what?  No more trees.  Cities are completely player built.  The game is ideal for people who like "society building" games.  Combat is lackluster.  People who like lots of combat need not apply.  If you like the idea of starting with an empty world that you can mold into something, then this game is for you.

Be warned, however, the devs seem to think that everyone has 10 hours a day to play the game.  Everything -- and i do mean everything -- takes an absurb amount of time to accomplish.  The game boils down to hours of watching a timer on the screen "waiting" for your next action to complete.  Want to dig some dirt?  grab a shovel, right-click on the ground, and choose dig.  When watch at the timer goes from 0 seconds to about 15 seconds.  While the time is moving, you do nothing but watch the screen and wonder what "interesting" things you could have done instead.  Everything is timer based.  Want to mine some rock?   Grab a pickaxe, right click on a rockface, and choose mine.  Then watch about a 35 second timer for the action to complete.  This is the world of Wurm.

    Click and wait...

The devs call the game a high-fantasy game, but i call it the medieval life simulator.  There is almost nothing fantasy about the game.  It's as if you were dropped into a world set in the middle ages with nothing more than a few basic tools and your goal is to survive.  I say survive because that's how your first days ingame will go.  No slaying dragons, no important quests from the king, but right-clicking on grass tile after grass tile looking for straberries or somesuch to eat to keep yourself from starving.  Food and water are constant problems.  The hungrier and thirstier you are the longer it takes to dig, mine, or anything else.  If you become too hungry, you won't be able to do anything at all but forage for food.  Foraging, unfortuanately, will never fill you up, it will only fill you just enough such that it you can look for more food.

Getting quality food to stave off your hunger pains is not trivial.

When you look at Wurm on paper, it looks like an interesting idea.  In practice, however, it simply isn't fun.  Even being listed on www.mmorpg.com and free and crossplatform, and easy to download, there are very few people who are willing to put up will all the non-fun elements of the game.  When i quit playing a couple months back there would be about 60-70 MAX on the server.  Typically there would be 20-30 people online.  For a free, 3-D mmorpg, these are very small numbers.  I have played numerous browser-based, text-based MMOs that attract much higher numbers than Wurm.

Finally, the Devs are arrogant.  One in particular is quick to boot/ban/silence players who offer constructive criticism about the game.  Clearly the devs have alot of talent in server/3-d engine and artwork, but they are lacking in some other notable areas such as how to make a game "fun".  Unfortunately the main guy is very closed-minded and even with the chorus of players pleading for the devs to inject some much needed fun into the game their ideas are quickly dismissed.

In the end Wurm will likely be one of those games that tried something new (which is a great thing), but ultimately failed because of the devs unwillingness to listen to their players.

I pretty much agree with Pink daisy, I really love the concept of having to build the world, starting off from scratch. It's probably the closest an MMORPG can get to the "evolutionary" type game. However, the amount of time you need to spend is absurd, and last time I played it (few months ago), they were lacking a number of features necessary to make a good MMO. But they are still in testing, so hopefully they'll pick things up.

I love the concept though, I just hope some AAA titles decide to go a similar route.

Whenever you post something as ignorant as that, you lose all credibility and your game loses credibility.

If you can't accept the fact that a game isn't perfect and has flaws, then you don't deserve to play a game period.
