EU is worst effected and ANet has already posted about it on Facebook and twitter. So please stop saying that thee are just some isolated cases.
Out of 20 community members who were looking forward to play GW2 today only one was able to log in. Rest are getting constant errors so it is not just couple of people having this problem.
I got in right at midnight eastern. No lag, one d/c over the course of a couple hours. Went fine for me. Until this morning; it appears the login servers are down. No big deal. Stuff happens. I don't expect perfection on day 1 of a Head Start with eleventy billion people trying to play at once.
Login servers are down, not the actual servers. The servers initially came up and the game was available to play at 12AM Eastern Time... 3 hours ahead of the time the website said. I played a total of 7 hours before being loged out with the "wrong password error". Two other friends and I got to level 12 before this happened so to say the launch was a failure is blowing things a bit out of proportion.
1. This isn't launch... it's headstart.
2. There were absolutely no issues with character creation or getting into the servers for all 3 of us.
3. The only issue we experienced once or twice was some network issue when traveling back to our leveling zone from the portal zone or whatever. This, I'm sure, was due to there being so many people on that they were being pushed to overflow servers.
4. Server lag was non-existent, which is something difficult to achieve for all initial launches/head starts these days.
5. Gameplay was flawless.
I'd hardly call this a "failure".
God that is amazing, hey friend the servers blew up and died, overflow switching was kicking everyone on planet Earth out to the character selection but none of it happened?
At least it gives something to do for the drama queens... they would be bored otherwise

Yeah, it's easier to have stable servers when 100.000 people maximum are hammering them than when close to 2 million are hammering them... ;-)
This is just an excuse really and I hardly think it's the cause of the issue. When games go down for patches and come back up, don't you think they'd experience the same "hammering" effect? When a game like WoW, which has millions of players, comes back online you don't see serious issues like this most of the time. So it's obviously something else.
As I said in my previous post logging in and creating my character and 100% problem free for my two friends and I... we all got 7 hours of play time in as well before we were booted. Why would an issue like this happen 7 hours after servers open up if it were due to what you're claiming it to be?
Well, what´s so funny is that so many people are agreeing with the '' ThreadMaker '' and are calling themselves .. mmo-vets. Humans are cocky anyway, however, a situation like this, has actually shown how many '' fake '' vets we have on this site. A game can be considered having a Launch Failure when the content itself is bugged, messed up or the game is just isn´t ready, soemthing that TSW actually had .. and exactly, it is what´s not happening here.
Connecting problems are '' usual '' when talking about big titles like Guild Wars 2, and you can´t really call TSW´s servers as '' BETTER '' just because the Luanch was smooth. You can´t basically compare 1.000.000 players to 1.00.000 and if you are really not understanding this, you should go back to school to take some extra math-class.
Otherwise, Diablo 3 had the same problems, if not worse, and it is controlled by Blizzard who has the biggest gaming servers in the world.

You should be in politics.
No, politics is all about being negative and making up the facts . . . that seems to be your specialty, not his.
It's 7:40am EST. I went to bed last night to avoid the initial startup problems. This morning I have tried to log in 5 times, but get the message the game client is unable to reach the login server. So I started reading this forum and discovered it was a good thing I did not pull an all-nighter. For you that did and from reading this forum, I feel your pain.
I am a software designer and programmer by trade. I don't know what is going on behind the scenes, but I suspect some serious performance issues may exist. It could be hardware or software performance issues. If it is hardware issues, then it may be that the number of players allowed to log onto a single server will have to be restricted. Hardware performance issues arise exponentially as the load rises. The resulting failures will be varied and unpredictable.
If there is a software performance issue (client or server), then it depends upon whether it is just some quickly fixable coding problems or a design issue. The latter issue can arrise in the architecture of the software system or the database design. Design issues can be very serious and take quite some time to fix. I hope these problems are not design issues, because if they are I suspect the level of discontent is going to rise as time passes.
Well, just tried to log again, but same error. Will give it a rest for a few hours. Good luck. See you later.

Again I'm aware my post was too much aggressive but I want to understand why is a post entitled as "GW2 Launch Failure" 40 minutes after the game head start (cuz yeah its not launch but head start) still not getting locked ? Anyone enlighten me please
Servers were actually up/playable at 12AM eastern.
Completely not true. TSW launch was extremely smooth. Zero techncal issues until about a week later, when the chat bug appeared.
Then you played another game thinking you were playing TSW because half the bugs I found on beta still were present on TSW headstart, I had many disconnection on the first 3 days, some of them impossible to login back for long.
Well, this is a discussion about GW2, not TSW then I have a great expectation on a polished game to play in the next few hours, maybe one day to things become smooth as there must be thousands and thousands of players starting today and when everyone click login at same time, something not predicted can happen. If everyone flush the toilet at same time maybe we have a pipe tsunami... muahuahauhauha
At least it gives something to do for the drama queens... they would be bored otherwise

I agree it is excuses because even SWTOR managed their servers very smoothly with over 1 million player hammering Bioware's servers on heastart / launch.
im still in the game. for some reason i got kicked and and blocked on avast. i excluded gw2 on avast and since then it works. not sure it'll work for anyone. i saw the one post earlier setting gaming mode on eset nd32
Im glad i didnt get up early here in England to "log in" as i cant even log in now (1PM) , i thought this game was gonna rock but this aint a good start especially for a early start (which we paid extra for ^^)
I bet this is another optimized for USA players Bull s hit

Going back to The Secret World (which had a 10/10 launch) for a while, but itching to try GW2 ( though I don't think I will like the cartoony "little mouse characters" things, but we'll see). I loved gw1 to bits, but have a bad feeling about gw2 - especially now after tsw launch.
TSW launch 100.000 players.
WoW launch 230.000 players.
GW2 lqunch 1.000.000 players.
there is no comparison, these games had way more isues than GW2 has right now at launch and we're talking login issues and some minor lag, with such a huge launch of course issues were expected. Still there are no gale breaking bugs ingame at this moment.
AND this is just head start pre launch......!
SWTOR launched with more and their launch went pretty smoothly.

The reason TSW probably had a better launch was because no one bought it.
My initial reaction as well
Tried TSW in beta for less than one hour before I uninstalled but since I got no shares of Funcome I couldn't care less if TSW is doing good or bad...
I login to GW2 at around 1:30 EST, have a blast playing the game at 60 FPS(finally!). Felt to tired to play, so went to sleep for a few hours. Woke up, unable to login. Searched the internets for a resolution( I expected this, one of the biggest games in gaming history and there are launch issues if you didn't see it, welcome to reality). I come to MMORPG.com forums, see the internet is raging at anet to accomidate the amount of players enjoying their game. TERA banners on every page giving the game away for 15.99 until the 28th. LOL.

Oh, these kind of topics are ussual here. Especially on launch day.
Yet again, MMORPG launch fails are ussual in industry too. Or since 2004 as far as i can conclude.
Nothing special... now im off to take my chill pills
Main MMO at the moment: Guild Wars 2
Waiting for: Pathfinder Online

This whole situation is fustrating.... Didnt they have an idea on the number of preorders... and the load the server(s) would be under?
