Nice isn't it to finally have a learning curve in an mmo again instead of the same old?
The skill descriptions do make a lot of sense, for almost every condition or boon they deal there's also a description what that boon / condition does, what the range is and each individual component of the skill is mentioned.
edit: oh and btw they recently added a ton more tutorial tips, if you feel so lost you might as well you know, read them by clicking on the question mark item in the top menu? As for WvW, as soon as you zone in there, there's a pvp scout that explains you the basics and even hints at some easier strategies if you talk to him (if they didn't change it that is, I haven't visited WvW on live server yet I'm enjoying some PvE exploration first).
Sorry, quick newbie question - when I right click an item I get the option to "send to collection". From there I can see the item sat in a greyed out list of other items - so have I just completely lost all these items and added them to a collection - and when I have all items in the collection I get a reward? (like Everquest 2 or Rift).
If so.. is there anyway to get them back? I need them for crafting!
Thank you

Don't feel bad. I played in the BWEs, and I'm still overwhelmed with...pretty much everything. I'm not rushing to 80, just rushing to have fun. Explore, ask questions, join a guild like Unrepentantgaming.com on Stormbluff Isle (shameless plug there)...

You mean "deposit all collectables" ? With that you send them to your bank so you can visit a banker to pick them up.

The greyed out items are the ones you haven't started collecting yet. Once you deposit 1 it will not be greyed out anymore. This confused me too at first...
Hey, who am I kidding? I may be totally wrong and still confused :S
Well, I didn't participate in BWEs but it's far from being my first MMO. Yet I barely understand what's happening around me. Skill descriptions barely make sense. WvWvW is a puzzle of its own - I'm not even close to understanding what's going on or what is I'm supposed to do there. (I can attack random targets ofc, but I have a feeling it's not exactly what WvWvW is about.
The game seems quite sophisticated. In most MMOs you just rebind controls to your liking and look up info about good builds and worthwhile addons.
In GW2 I feel like I'm lost, completely. The learning curve just skyrocketed right from the start and I'm looking at it hopelessly from down here. Not that it'll make me quit, but it's not a very pleasant feeling.
P.S. To get the right answers I need to ask the right questions. I realize this. Well, so far I don't even know the questions.
First off take a deep breath and know that you are not the first to come across this. There was a rather long discuccion in Beta in regards to this and the conclusion was that it is about 10 hours to unlearn everything that you know and to re-learn GW2 combat.
For most people it seemed that they were overwhelmed by everything that was going on. There was just so much happening that you did not know where to start.
So just saying you are not alone - just stick with it and you will suddenly have a revalation.
Well, I didn't participate in BWEs but it's far from being my first MMO. Yet I barely understand what's happening around me. Skill descriptions barely make sense.
Skills: Just read what it does, it makes sense as long as you look up in interwebs all the descriptions for all the conditions. Confuse = makes mobs hurt them self, Blind = makes next attack miss, Poison = damage over time + heal nerf etc, look them up and all the skills makes sense.
PvE: Do heart quests + personal story, and join Dynamic events as soon as they pop up nearby, they happen everywhere, then continue heart q's/story. Or you might want to just run around and stumble in dynamic events while looking for collectables around map (like skill points that you need for buying more skills).
Remember, in this game you are not supposed to complete everything in a map since so much "random" stuff happens, and the maps are full of stuff to discover. Story is kinda the only thing you "need" to follow if you want to follow a certain path onwards.
Edit: I should have perhaps mentioned that this game does not have quest hubs like every other themepark mmorpg, meaning: no big list of quests in a quest log, so stop looking for them and do single story/heart quest at a time and join any events anywhere you find if you feel like
PvP: Havent got time to do much WvW or sPvP yet to comment on it with experience.

the game has just started lol . it will take sometime of you to learn it .i remember playing wow for the first time .BC had just launched and it was my first mmo . so nothing to worry . ask around and hopefully people will help you or join a guild that is built on the purpose of helping eachother

All I would add is that WvW is a serious time black hole... BWE2 I thought I'd give it a quick go before hitting the sack and lost 5 hours of my life - amazingly good fun!
Funnyiest part was spending a good 45 minutes whacking a keep door (no one had any siege plans) in between killing spawning guards and enemy players trying to interfere... Door finally goes down... shouts of 'whoop' and 'go go go'... and there's another door right behind it LOL.

By sending them to your collection you have in fact sent them to your bank. If you go to your bank in a capital city you will find that there is a second tab which should be labelled collection. In there you will find all your stuf.

Lol. Sounds like a good time getting to know your fellow realm mates

Yeah, I guess it'll all become clear sooner or later.
But I wonder how ANet is going to keep casuals from leaving? I mean I saw people complained about D3 being too hard when in fact you could run Inferno in really cheap gear if you had some basic understanding of positioning and skill synergy. And you had 3 "tutorial" difficulties to learn that.
Seriously, I doubt Anet spends much thought on the casual audience. From their perspective, beyond initial box sales, what good are they? They are the ones that typically pile into a new game, and then leave in a month or two (hence the spike/drop off we've all seen much too often).
Keep in mind that any game Dev staff has a limit in regards to the time/talent/experience they have available. This is even true of Blizzard, with its billions of profits from WoW. That being the case, any resources that are directed at keeping the limited attention span crowd engaged, aren't available for keeping the core audience (the people who play a game for a year or more) engaged.
Not to mention, that focus on the casual market, tends to alienate the non casuals (who will be sustaining the game).
Sure, some of the areas have some limited overlap, but that takes a level of experience and talent thats rare among technical staff. Its really the job of marketing to get the casuals in (for initial sales), and if a few of them manage to stick around, then its all good.

Anet clearly has casuals in mind, stuff like vistas and endless events + gaining XP after max level are exactly what keeps casuals playing. If you only have raids and PvP as "end-game" in your mmorpg the casuals wont like it since they have to change their play style from casual to more serious in order to keep up with raiding and PvP progression.
What helped me is watching video's on Youtube about builds. I am playing a guardian and this person had a good support build and explained it really good. So it made me understand the skills and items a way better! Youtube is always handy to use!

Enjoy being a noob again, it makes all things new and fresh you learn fast enough, dont do to many things at once, just go with your flow.
Read tooltip often, and make sure you memorize what they do.
skill 1 - can be set to auto attack Keybind the rest to your liking Bind Dodge to A or D or some other fast reaching key. Bind Face over to A or D or some other fast reaching key <--Face over = 180 degress turn
In Pve take it slow and make sure to check every inch you walk, some shit hits the fan by a simple rock you see laying on the ground and kicks off 1 epic dymamic event.
In WvW stick to the zerg / small group, dont act like rambo, use your hardest hitting skills then retreat, rinse and repeat.
Take it easy and dont rush, each level requires the same Exp, have fun

Thanks for the tips, specifically the ones highlighted.
Not trying to be a jerk here but....
You exerpience with most MMOs is that you go online to research and find add ons and builds.
Ummm so why arent you going online to research about GW2?
If you do not know what questions to ask then just start reading about the game in general. Others have good links which should help out well.
That's what I'm doing since servers are down anyway.
BTW, thanks for links and tips, people! Much appreciated.
MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).
