Yeah in those days MMOs didn't have millions of players on Day 1...
Don't really know how they did in TOR, but consideringt that I usually get much less continous gaming time these days than I did few years ago, I'd really rather be playing on the overflow server, popups, transfers and all, than having to sit on a login screen staring at a queue window like other games I've played.
What can men do against such reckless hate?
I find it strange they went this route. They could have just made overpopulated zones create new instances of them on the same server while keeping chat singular for every instance on that map.
They either didn't really see the effect this has during beta, or ... well I have no idea.
Overflow server or sitting in queue for a hour, pick one.
This has to be the greatest thing about this game, never again will we be stuck in queue watching a number count down
in TOR if a planet got too many people, another instance was created. if you opened up the map, you would see a drop down that would list the instances. you could then select a different one if you wanted to move to it so people could stay together. and if someon that was in a different instance sent you an invite to a group, you would then get a message asking if you wanted to move to the same one.
Its funny, because one of the first games I ever experienced using this feature of multiple instances of the same zone was Guild Wars (1). Yeah, no queues are great, but with all the loading between personal story and the city, its almost not worth accepting your place on the main server due to adding antoher loading screen. It is also a little buggy when trying to play with friends.

i love that im playing.. i really only want the buffs.. if they could make it so your still recieveing your servers WvWvW id be blown away, and i wouldnt care about what overflow server im waiting in..
I would like to see kind of a cluster/ server that is sort of like an overflow. Lets say the cluster is named Blue. It is filled with with subservers of itself like Blue1, Blue2, Blue3. Each server is created when the previous gets near full. If your friends are on Blue3 and you're on Blue1, just port over( EQ2 did that with instances of city zones when it got too full).
Maybe already have those Blue 1-5 made and let people choose which one they want to be on. After time has passed, you can just make the cluster smaller, that way it doesn't seem like the game is dead and merging is needed. Heck, you can even leave them and just let people move to the Blue they want to be on. Of course the WvW would utilize all of the cluster.
Daoc was like this later on too, when servers became smaller, instead of just merging, they became part of a cluster and you could move through to other parts of the servers while the rvr was all of them. Of course later they got rid of having to move through servers since everyone was just part of the cluster.
The overflow kind of sounds like this, but maybe not as user friendly.
The OP is the perfect example of someone will cry no matter what.... Gimme a break, would you rather sit in a quere for a couple hours? How about 20 more extra servers that will just get merged later anyway once the initial rush setteles down only to create MORE problems, like people losing their names and stuff.
Geez some people!
^ and it was said before launch this exact thing would happen but like you say whats the alternative? in swtor they had over 100 servers and STILL had queues and people were going ballistic.. there really is no good solution for this massive amount of people starting a game all at once

they should have just done like gw1 when you enter a city /town you had channel, so if iam on channel 1 and my friend on 2 i just go and join 2 to party up,
in aion is the same thing some area had channel,

They may have fixed the overflow server bug with parties.
My brother and I had no issues earlier.

Never have those been the only two options.
EXACTLY on my list of things i do NOT miss from the older days. I can give up a week of not seeing friends to be able to play or has everyone forgotten the added bonus of error 37 on top of the que?
I didn't know that. I know in the past, WoW before expantions, if you transfered servers and your new home had that name taken already you have to make a new name.
