The number of players spoils a lot of events / quests.

Right now that's my major complaint. I play on Underworld ( I believe it was medium population server ) and the number of players who often join the events make them not really fun. I have no chance to get into what's the event is really about, before our zerg kills, burns and rapes everything what moves. Sure I still get gold, but there is no challenge involved. Spamming one main NPC with 20-30 other people is simply not fun.

It looks like that the smaller events just don't scale properly to make it a longer lasting challenge. There is not enough enemies and stages don't last long enough.

I think we've all experienced this to some extent but much of it is the starting zones being jam packed with players.  I only played the last Beta and I heard they made the game much easier compared to the first 2 betas and it still feels fairly easy now.

Who knows how they did the programming but often times you can go from a few players trying to tackle an event to around 15 players in seconds.  I'm not so sure the game can resond that fast to scale the event.  Alll of the champions I've fought have felt about right even with like 20 players hitting them they still fight back and the battle usually takes a full minute or more with players dying etc.

The defend events however seem to happen exactly how you describe with everything being blasted to oblivion by AOE before it even comes up on your screen.  Makes things really unfun.  If you've tried one of these events solo though it's pretty damn hard.  There seems to be a sweet spot at around 4-6 players.

Like byendrey said. It's mainly starter zone that there is a zerg, and that's only in the early starter zone (up to level 7 or so). After a while, players are scattered over the map and the zerg becomes less & less. I even had a couple of events done with one other player because there was no1 else around (kinda fun as well). While I also did an even with 2 others where we really needed at least 10 players (Inquest Research Facility in the north part of Metrica Province).

try the Charr starting area -- i was skipping many newbie DEs under level 10

because it was too challenging solo  (FireShaman in Caves, the ghosts / elementals near the contested waypt)

or just try diff starting areas

goto your capital city - take the asura gate to Lions Arch - visit a random portal and tour around

It's always like this at launch.  My advice roll a couple of alts to get a feel of the different classes and after a couple of days when the majority have moved on, the starter areas will be more enjoyable without the zerg playing tag a mob.

This is exactly what I have done in the end. I rolled a human thief ( my first char is a Norn warrior ) and I was in luck to have a slightly smaller crowd around me. Fighting some champions ( like that golem at the dam ) was actually fun as you had to move around. With 20-30 people around you, chance of it attacking you would be rather slim. I have nothing against other players. I love team play, but it almost feels like a sale day in a super market.

It's a fair point, I got around the zeroing problem by just avoiding those events, I plan to go back later. Interestingly I did enjoy a few zergs, and still plan to go back to try it when it is quiet or with a small group- demonstrates the de's are repeatable.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

Yeah thanks to the downscaling feature it might be a good idea.

Down scaling is probably one of the best features in the game. It means every that you can play through each race's zone from begining to end to get a feel for the whole story. Its fantastic

I'm now glad I rolled human initally (just couldn't bring myself to have my character be anything but Human for RP sake) because I've only had this problem on the "defend this area" quest (granted I play at odd times).  I'm sure ANET will get the scaling system tweaked properly. If they can't get it done, I hope they pick random days and make it nearly impossible to win unless you have like 50+ people in the zone. Coupled with the way loot is scaled for your actually level could mean great raid style content without need for much development.

This is one of my complaints too.  The zerg aspect of the events ruins them.  Hopefully over time, it will settle down as less people start playing in the lower zones.
