I 100% understand this one, however HOW are hackers getting these people emails?
i bet people not playing the game won't get an email, only those playing. That would mean the emails are directed right at the users and how would the hackers know that?
Example i have not and i bet never will get a GW2 email.
Keyloggers again would need to focus on the actual players ,i will never get a GW2 keylogger. Now in this case it could happen from the players going to or even being curious about bot programs.
So if you have done nothing wrong ,it leaves imo only phising as the cause OR A-Net is getting hacked or have people inside hacking the passwords.
People who have accounts are receiving password reset emails from ArenaNet. The hackers are using ArenaNet's own password reset system to attempt to steal accounts. They could put in any email address, but ArenaNet won't send an email unless you have an account.
So, the email database at AreanaNet is not necessarily compromised.
Nice try, it tells you on the launcher why you were banned.
Or you could go post on the reddit thread and get the support team to confirm it for you
Some of those are awesome. I really liked the one where the guy says he didn't do anything wrong then it turns out he was using the N-word, classy, haha.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
According to some comments on the reddit thread, permanent ban usually means your account was hacked and used for RMT;
"Accounts are not actually "permanently banned" once we hear from the owner. If the account was hacked and used for gold selling or gold seller advertising by the account thief, the legitimate account owner needs to get in touch with Support. At that time Support will help the account owner regain access and the "ban" will be lifted. This is a top priority and the agents are working as quickly as possible."
Why dont they just fix the authentication of emails and then do what Rift and many others have done and lock the account to an IP unless you have access to the registered email to authorise access to the account.
Originally posted by VitaminK I've gotten several emails about password resets although I have no once tried to reset my password.
I just received my 7th one about five minutes ago, and this is the first time this has ever happened to me in over a decade of online gaming. I'm very careful about how I set up my game accounts, but something seems to be compromised somewhere.
Password reset has been disabled (per arena net news recently) so they know about it. As far as bans go, indeed it could be an honest mistake of hack, but 97% of the time it's a legit ban. As posted elswhere, I warned two buddies about using bots in game, they are banned within a day. To bad so sad for them, I did warn them, Arena Net isn't fooling around and their dedication is showing ten fold atm. It's good for them as it will just re-enforce the issue on how serious they take their game and community just meaning more sales in the long run.

also watch your email to because some might also be phishing scams going around like I still to this day get from wow and D3.
I STILL get these for Runescape even though I played RS for like 20 minutes 5 years ago. I've gotten at least 2 a week for 5 FRIGGIN YEARS.
hehe same for me in world of warcraft, never liked the game, played it for 2 weeks, and sense I keep getting "your account has been compromised! click here!" lol

I'm not playing the game, yet I got an email yesterday claiming someone initiated a password reset. I actually haven't used my NCSoft account in 3 or 4 years, so whatever list they are going off of, isn't limited to new GW2 accounts.

That's just it though, most people seem to use the same few passwords for all of their various online accounts, including email. Getting access to an email account really isn't that difficult.
I know a lot of people think something like, "lol, nobody is clicking links in suspicous emails", WRONG! I have a few friends, who have had computers for a decade, along with internet. Still, to this day, they click random links in random emails they get from unknown places. They arent stupid, or at least, they dont appear stupid normally, but they still do this. Why, I have no idea. I have even told them several times that its extremly stupid, yet they continue to do it. Some of them have gotten accounts banned in various MMO's. They dont seem to learn.
"Oh, looks, this email is from *@ArenaNet.com", and they are asking for my password, I better give it to them".
If you didn't use the same email address and/or password for your game as you did for random forums etc then this would never happen.
Each game I play has a unique email address tied to it along with a unique password. Still not been hacked and I have 3 WoW account, 7 Eve Online accounts and accounts for numerous other games as well.
