Confession of an anti-GW2 guy.

First off. Let me say a little back story.

I have been banned 3 times on mmorpg.com. For talking bad about GW2 before it released. (giggle)

So many times have I been excited or hyped for a game through friends or forums here and there. Almost every time I was dissapointed. As I truly disliked GW1 and i mean hated it. I expected the same junk (opinion) to come to this game. Well let me admit. I was wrong. I am sorry for anyone I ever put down on the forums or argued with over nothing. Guild Wars 2 is a huge leap in innovation and wether I play the game for a month or for 2 years. I will know this game coming out and selling a ton of copies is good for the MMORPG business and better yet for us gamers looking for someone to change the game. Sure this isnt a masterful rework of all mechanics we have known. It is a different way to do them. A better way.

It has been since Rift released, that I was excited to explore the lands of a game so youthfully with excitement. I wake up every day and my mind explodes into thought immediatly pondering what I shall do next in Tyria! This scope of this game and the goals given to accomplish seem to be able to keep me busy for a LONG time! Which is great because I consume games like the most ravenous bunch and on 1 character alone I see 100s of hours of gameplay ahead. No labor in doing so. Just brim with excitement to do more heart quests and reach those skill challenges hidden across the lands.

A lesson learned.

I will no longer be anti-gaming. I will no longer "diss" anyone for liking what they like or being excited and hoping the coming mesiah of mmorpgs is around the corner! I will let bygones be bygones.

I am a 16 hour a day mmorpg gamer. 17 years of strict mmo gaming. I can honestly say this is a great year for mmorpgs. Combat seems to be a huge thing being evolved in mmorpgs this year. I think we can thank Tera and Raiderz and now GW2 for showing people that action oriented combat IS THE NOW! (doesn't mean tab cant still be viable) What Guild Wars 2 also shows us, questing can be fun! Exploring is not dead! You do not have to fear others attacking your mobs! Games without some of these core designs are going to feel archaic to me now. I am a spoiled gamer in the year 2012. Keep it up Devs!

I give Guild Wars 2: 10/10

Why? Cause I can.

GW2 is nothnig special and no where near a 10 lol but we all like different things..

for me its hovering around a 7 to 7.5

heart quests are some of the most boring i have ever seen.. i dont see 100s of hours of new game play here.. if your a 16 hour a day gamer you will be lvl 80 in no time..

WvWvW is the only stand out bit about this game and that you have to q for ages..

Well I have put in 100 hours already and I am only lvl 31...Lots to explore. 5 starting areas to clear out and so much more. Of course this game wont be for everyone. My expectations were phenominally low for this game. As it neared my hype grew. As it released my hype turned into HOLY ZOMG WTF THIS IS A VIDEO GAME ZOMG GIMME MORE SLEEP IS LAME!

If hearts are boring, just skip them? Thats what I do :)

There actually is 100's of hours worth of content without repeating a single thing, game does not 'end' at 80 it just means you have all the content open for you.

And to OP: Glad you are enjoying the game it's always nice when people find a game so exciting and refreshing. I'm right there with you :)

Ah i will be skipping the hearts i think unless they get any better in the next area.. im gonna give them a proper chance its just so far they are basically your standard kill and collect missions just you have to kill or collect a lot more things.. its very boring and somthing that really suprised me..

For me i think ill mostly be spending my time in WvWvW and crafting.. tho i do want to complete the character story line as i must admit i qutie like that.

You know I ran into a task in the Norn noob area that looked like another typical gathering mission...until I realized it was actually a puzzle where you have to trade with these trolls to effectively get the items you need to turn in. It was an interesting twist.

OP, I was the same way with WoW.  I was playing Guild Wars 1 when I first starting hearing all the hype about WoW and the episode of South Park, and I hated it.  It sounded really obnoxious, but like you, I don't like to judge a game fully until I've had time to play it.  I was immediately drawn in by the smoothness of the game and its combat (the most important feature for me in an MMO since it's mostly what you do in them), and played it for years.  I felt silly judging it prematurely.  You live and learn.  Of course, now I wouldn't touch WoW with a ten foot pole through no fault of mine or the players, but Blizzard themselves.

Good for you. Sad that it took you really liking a game you hated on for you to realise the mistake is taking people opinions of things and using it as ammo to attack them. IMHO everyone who isn't tolerate of the fact that ppl have differing opinions and that it is no reason to hate is ruining this great genre and market.

I do wonder what would have happened if you had disliked the game upon release, would you be here preaching tolerance or continueing your attack against those who do actually like it.

This isn't ment to be mean but its meant to show you that this isnt an epiphany you have suddenly had, its you waking up to common sense and decency.

2Would you forgive a racist if he turned around one day and said?; "You know i spoken to one of them today and he was actually alright...stupid me eh?"

If you continue to make sweeping statements like you know what everyone everywhere thinks about a certain topic then I am going to shout at you.
It easy to type 'I think this is the worst game ever'
Rather than the 'This is the worst game ever'

Personaly, I was realistically expecting the game to be great because I actually loved Guild Wars 1. I was one of those rare people who actually understand that GW1 is NOT an mmo. If you fail to see that, then you're going to have a bad time trying to make the game something it's not.

When I pre-purchased GW2 and played the beta though, it was a pretty big let down. I've been forcing myself to play through it the pass few days and it's actually growing on me. However I still find it pretty mediocre. It's my own fault though. I've been playing MMOs for 13 or 14 years now. Although, I think it's really the combat. The combat feels like the outdated hit and get hit combat only you can movie around.

Now I'm not saying Tera is better than GW2, not by a long shot, but it's combat is definately a lot more fun than GW2's. I know some older people don't like action combat becuase it hurts their hands or something, but you still have to be pretty active with this set up anyway so why no true action combat? And why does the regular attack take up a skill slot?

Buuut like I said I'm slowly getting into. The fact that theres no monthly cost helps a lot. The dynamic events don't seem so glorious as they were made to be. they just reset over and over again a few minute when they're done giving you no sense of impacting anything. I'm guessing that changes later in the game.

Naw my forum days are dwindling. I just got on to read some stuff at work. Im rarely on forums anymore. The internet is a negative place. I am human. I can be a hyprocrite when it comes to being a fanboi. Whatever that means. People believed in GW2 and to an anoying tolerance for me. Why? Because I didn't believe in the product/arenanet. I as not a fan of there games previously.

This week i learned a very important quote froms ome dude on history channel. Mountain men.

Let me tell you a story of a heart I did today. I was walking in the 25-40 norm area and at some point, I was followed by some mobs. Didn't want to kill them so I run. But I fall down of a rock and found myself at a camp. I told myself to continue from there ( I was looking for a skill trainner ) and right in front of the camp, there was a suspended bridge of wood close to the mountains, so you could go forward only on that bridge. But the point is , there was this heart , saying to clear the road from mobs, rocks, etc . As I walked few meters mobs started to appear , and there were big rocks on the bridge , which you first needed to distroy them in order to walk foward. You could not move to much, as you would risk to fall down and die.  At the end of the bridge, I finished that heart! I was like "THIS , is what I call a good heart/quest/event/etc and MMO's should follow this step" . It was dynamic for me ( yes, second time is not dynamic anymore ) , but it matters the first time when you face it and complete it.

I completed another event yesterday, where I needed to protect a caravan to get to the desire location. At some point, an avalanche blocked our way, and we were attacked. This was very fun too.

Point is .. just walk, explore and take your time.
