dont get me wrong i like the game. i like the settings, animatinos, stories, classes, etc. i like many things but i feel a great empty space where i always have my healer in every mmos.

i like healing. not playing "whack a mole" with HP bars but actually keeping my team mates alive and saving them from sure death. it gives me more pleasure then getting the final blow on an enemy. call me a healer at heart but in every mmo i've had at least one healer.

the more i play GW2 the more i find myself wishin i could just friken heal my mates....ffs just let me heal!!

i dunno, maybe i just havent found the calss for me yet in this game (i've only tried Guardian, engeneer, thief so far). i like the Guardian because you can shield your mates from damage but the healing is very very limited.

meh...i hope if find it. i feel so usless when i can't heal. anyone got any suggestion for a good support calss? maybe i should try control...

I feel you OP. It is something I really feel is missing in this game as well. A lot of people consider this a 'feature', but I have to say it kills a lot of what I find enjoyable in MMOs.

Maybe you should give Elementalist water role a go.

As an engineer I can heal a ton already and im only lvl 13. 4 ways already to heal.

I have 2 skills that heal my teammates and myself in an AOE.

Also I have another skill that allows me to drop med kits and antidote kits that they can use by running over them on the ground where i drop them.

Thirdly i can also drop a healing turret and it stays there healing everyone that comes in range.

You can always rez people as well by just clicking over them when they die.

I think its great how this game allows just about every class to be able to heal and rez teammates and others with ease.

    GAME TIL YOU DIE!!!!

You can't heal the way you can in a "holy trinity" MMO at all.

There are ways to make you feel like you are more useful to your group in a Support role though.

First off, Condition Clearing (Cleansing) is huge in this game especially the Dungeons so Professions and Builds focusing on that are really helpful/important. Mesmer and Warrior both have some really strong builds for this.

Second, the game is designed so that people will drop in the harder group content (Downed State and Defeated). There are builds that focus on helping people get back into the fight. Warrior and Mesmer once again can get "Battle Rez" abilities to help with that. Guardians with their Shields and Bubbles are really good at this. One interesting build is Thief as one of the few Professions in the game that gets really good Haste buffs - and that Haste Buff lets you Revive people faster.

Finally, Elementalists specializing in Water have a lot of Support abilities including minor AoE Heals. Same goes for Engineer - some very strong Support builds for that Profession as well.

Tho theres no actual healer in this game, i found that ranger has quite good healing.  And if you spend your trait points on the healing line thats a lot of potential, area heals, regens etc

I used to like DPS, for the last few years I switched to healer in most all of my mmo.s....I got real good at healing and loved it.

BUT......as much as I miss it, GW2 way of no healer is fine by me......I love the game :)

Engineer actually has a lot of healing options. You can drop bandages and performance boosting items for people, set up a healing turret, throw AOE healing / buffing elixirs, and use (my personal favorite) the elixir gun to buff people and AOE heal, while doing some decent damage.

Elementalist also has some nice healing skills in the water tree, if you want to try one.

Thank baby Jesus they did away with strict class roles.  There are plenty of ways to atune your character to primarily support your team rather than looking for all the glory.  I actually commend players like that because the majority of players are the exact oppisite.

I'm not sure exactly what to say because I've been playing a warrior and through my trait trees and skills it's very clear which ones are support and which ones are personal.  For example in my tactics line it allows me to revive way faster and get more bonuses to my defense when doing so.  I can take skills like banners etc to boost all of my allies defense, damage, etc.

I have not made a guardian but I've heard they heave even more support abilities.

In other games the healers are so necessary that they become like rock stars because everyone needs them.  In this game the support roles are less clearly defined and people are more self reliant therefore if you want to be the guy who boost and supports your entire team it will probably be a mostly thankless job unless you're playing with the same people consistently that realize what you're bringing to the table.

There are so many ways you can focus on supporting your team. I agree that elementalist/water/staff might be the place to start.

Ranger with traps+healing spring? Guardian with...everything?

yea i'm thinking of trying my engeneer a bit longer, and see if it gets better. i only got mine to level 10 so far...maybe i just didnt' unlock the right skills.

I think it is the water aspect of elementalists that has AoE healing. I think that is about as close to a healer that you will find.

You have Geyser, Healing Rain, and Water Blast. (Links to GW2 Guru website.)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

You really need to coordinate with your teammates to get effective burst healing.  The best way to heal in a dire situation is to drop a water field and have multiple players including yourself use a blast finisher through it.  This will instantly heal everyone inside it pretty much to full.  Other combo finishers also contribute to the healing by adding regeneration or individual heals.  Only elementalist, rangers and engineers can drop water fields.  Staff elementalist is your best bet.

On a purely individual level you can only accomplish minor burst heals and some regeneration effects.

I agree that it has been an interesting transition for us healers.  I am having fun, but I do feel like I am being forced through a DPS pipe.  That being said, there are ways to really be supportive on your team.  I find the Water Elementalist with a staff gives as close to the feeling.  With the dynamic events it can be quite fun to run as a water elementalist and throw aoe heals around; but due to the cooldowns you definitely jump into the fight a bit more than normal.  I'm adjusting...just wasn't expecting such a harsh adjustment.

Think we knew this would be an issue for a long time.  It does feel like they tossed the baby out with the bathwater, as far as healing goes.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

  • HomituHomitu Member UncommonPosts: 2,030

I can't believe nobody else has suggested combos yet.  Ready my post above.

    Combos combos combos people!

Use those water fields!  And if you see a water field, use a blast finisher inside of it!

You felt so much pain, you couldn't hit the n-key ;)

I feel the complete opposite. I always liked to play hybrid classes that can do a little bit of everything. That a game forces you to play your class in a certain way was a painful experience for me. And in the end I always asked myself:"Why does my class have 40 abilities, when I am forced to use the same 3 abilites all the time?" Moreover there are many players who behave in a very irresponsible way. They do not care about aggro or boss-mechanics and just blame it on the healer, if they die. I like the approach that everybody has basically to care about himself. And finally, almost every profession in GW2 can suppport his group with a great variety of abilities that go far beyond healing.

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.

I don't get how changing every role into DPS is innovative but w/e. I coulda sworn variety was the spice of life, don't know if many variations of dps counts.

Well, part of what you are feeling is the removal of the holy trinity.

There are many support builds, and a lot of those include ways to help heal. But no build is meant to "Heal" in the way that a healer did in the holy trinity. The onus is on each player to limit their own damage intake, as well on support builds to help by removing conditions. Support healing helps take up for the collateral damage, but there is no strict heavy heal build that is there just to push heals per second.

Generally, if a player dies, there was either something that player did incorrectly (didn't dodge, stood in the fire, something), or the mechanic was there to make them die inevitably to force the rest of the party to cover and help them recover.

That, and without a tank build/aggro mechanic, it makes the need for a heavy-healing build less necessary.

So far, the closest thing I've found to a traditional trinity healer has been a Guardian. Virtue of Resolve is a base heal that you get all the time with every build. For weapons Staff (Orb of Light and Empower both are heals), or Mace/Focus (Symbol of Faith and Ray of Judgement are light heals) are both healing oriented. Combine that with some of the advanced slot skills: Healing Breeze, Bow of Truth, Signet of Mercy, Sanctuary, Merciful Intervention (those are all I can vouch for up through Level 29) - those are all heal abilities, and I didn't even mention the Cure Condition ones, there are several of those (both party and self-only). And the trait bonuses build upon those even farther: Honor gives straight +Healing, just for instance.

None of the heals are heavy, most are light regens or small spot heals, but again, the game is designed to not have heavy heals in the first place.

I played a Healer a lot in Rift and I'm currently playing an Elementalist and I'm loving how helpful I feel in a group setting. Not quite a healer, since I can actually deal tons of damage, but still very supporty.

Like your typical pull on the Ascalon dungeons with those damned Rangers. The mobs AOE immobilize and posions everyone. I switch to water that cleanses 1 condition and starts healing everyone. Hit skill-5 to cleanse some more & heal more. Heal some more with skill 3. Summon my Elite that heals some more. Switch to Earth that grants protection to everyone, so they take less damage and then return to dealing damage.

    So try that out.

Yeah I've always played a healer but found no place in GW2 other than Guardian as a support.

Yeah thats one of the keys is getting past 10. You get your 1st trait point at 11. From there you have 4 paths you can spec into, each with a maximum of 30 points, and you gaining 70 points total at 80.

One of those trait lines increases your Healing power by 10 points per Trait Point sent, and then also has a secondary stat it increases (i believe this is different between the different classes). Then not only do you get the direct stat boosts, but you have 3 static bonuses youw ill gain at 5,15,and 25 points as well as 3 which you can choose and swap out for different ones at any time for 10,20, and 30 points. Theres a lot of variety in those 10,20,30 skills which gives you options for passively increasing certain stats or effects, as well as additional buffs/bonuses given by procs (triggered on certain skill usage/effects).

Once you get into filling out your traits youll really start to shine more as a healer compared to other players if thats where you spec.

Also, if you want to play around with the specs/traits and see what your class has to offer for different roles later on, just press H, click the tab for PvP on the left, and choose Go to the Heart of the Mists. Once you load up there, youll be level 80 with 70 Trait Points. You can freely reset the trait points then and spend them in different lines and browse through the various skils offered in each to get an idea of how you want to spec as you progress through the normal leveling and really plan out how to be the best healer/supporter your class can be.

Variety is the spice but if you get  Monk/Priest = HEAL, Warrior/Paladin = TANK, Elementalist, Ranger, Rogue = DPS. Where is the variety in that - it is pidgeonholing!

I like how GW2 is doing the roles - you can really feel the difference when playing. There seem to be no wasted skills. I mean try a hammer warrior for some real fun!!

I'm sorry for healers, but I'm happy for the lack of healer wars in this game, especially after TOR and Rift PvP.

A support role is still there for nearly every class and is very useful to have.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
