It's nice to see that EVE Online has finally made it to the top of the ratings chart. I'm not currently playing EVE, and i'm not saying it is without problems, but it's place atop the list is well deserved. Congrats to the guys over at CCP for continuing to improve EVE. Hopefully other MMO developers will take chances like CCP did instead of rehashing the same crappy gameplay over and over again.

Yup, congrats to the CCP guys... that game's depth is unparallel right now.

Eve is now tied with GW as the top ranked MMO on this board.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
iv played both, eve for around a month and guild wars for 3 i really dont like eve.. i love space games etc but in eve u gotta click n stuff its a slow game ! i love the graphics but graphics dont do much to u, id say guild wars deserves top for sure!
If I had the same 10 people making multiple accounts... Well not going to go into that. Those ratings are about as accurate as saying "12 x 12 = 12".
In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.
I love space games, I've never played Eve but I've considered it. I hear a lot of mixed reviews. Some love it, some hate it. It's very half in half. Usually all of my friends like pretty much the same thing. Either they all love the same games, or hate the same games, with very few differences. They all hate Eve. But it's simply because they hate point n' click, and they said it's very slow.
If Eve were twitch based, I'd have been all over it in a heart beat. The only thing that kept me in SWG was their twitch based space combat. There's just something about having to actually game for yourself that I like. I know it's not the most skill requiring game, but it's just different than the auto-targetting, ya' know?
Well sure there are over 2,700+ people who rated EVE 2,200+ for GW and 4,400+ for WoW. No doubt that there are EVE "fanbois" who give EVE a 10 and sign up for multiple accounts so they can vote more than once. That also means, however, that there are people who create multiple accounts to give GW and WoW 10s and even some who create accounts to give the games they dislike 0s.
My point being here as the sample size increases, the net effect of people trying to skew the numbers declines. Currently there are 2,761 votes for EVE with a average score of 8.4. If we assume the total score is 8.400 then there are a total of 2761x8.4=23,192.4 total points for EVE. If you go create 10 new accounts and give EVE a 10 for each account, then the total points for EVE would be 23,192.4+10x10=23,292.4 Now divide that by the new total number of ratings (2,761+10=2,771) and you get 23,292.4/2,771=8.406 thus you raised the score from 8.400 to 8.406 which will still show up at 8.4 in the ratings system.
Again the error in your logic is that only EVE fanbois would collude to skew the numbers whereas the GW and WoW fanbois would not. In the end all the fanboi/anti-fanboi attempts have virtually no effect as the sample size grows.
Are they 100% accurate? No. Are the EVE fanbois skewing the values a meaningful amount? No.

I played EQ1, EQ2, WOW and some guildwars.
Eve should definitely be near the top, no doubt about it.
I am somewhat partial to the original EQ1 as well. Not the nerfed Sonyized version that lives out there, but an earlier EQ1 that had a certain feel about it.....
But Eve is REALLY good. If you only play it for a week or two though, you probably won't get it.......
"But Eve is REALLY good. If you only play it for a week or two though, you probably won't get it......."
Thats the problem I had with EvE. I dont like games that take me over a week just to have fun.
"I'm sorry but your mmo has been diagnosed with EA and only has X number of days to live."
There's a difference between taking a long time to understand a complex game and grinding until whatever level. You don't pick up a copy of Civilization or Master of Orion and decide that it's boring because you don't understand how the game mechanics work within the first 5 minutes of playing.
It definitely deserves it's place at the top. It may not be everyones cup of tea, heck, I don't even play it, but it IS the very definition of MMO. It's got a fantasitc engine, amazing graphics, the record (I believe) for most players all online at once in a persistant world, and it is completely 100% player run and controlled. Players police players. There are real time bounites, and real time bounty hunters. All of this from a team of 5 guys sitting out in their basement or garage; making a better game just to show they could.
That kind of spirit is what drives this, or any other kind of successful business, and for that fact alone, you have to give credit where credit is due. Congratulations CCP. Enjoy your stay at the top.
Hmm, I've seen some screenshots of this game and it looks good! Some of my friends told me to give it a try, well, I guess I will now! Hope it's not boring!
Dont belive the hype!
EVE is good , but only as any reasonable "ELITE" clone would be.
EVE also suffers GREATLY from very bad design solutions. It is sadly slow paced. Graphic is uninspired (just compare Freelancer to EvE ( and i am not talking about ships , because ships is only thing you see in eve.)
Player interaction is no more than remote chat in EVE. It is like playing single player game and having IRC running in background.
Great setting , bad game. Very sad.

Yeh!
Finally.. EVE is the best and should be at the top..
Bout time Guild Crap Wars went down from it's undecerving place..
Hope it goes all the way down to the bottom floor :P
Cheers!

I've been playing EVE for only 2 days right now, and once I'd finished the excellent tutorial I found myself sitting at a space station thinking "What next?". Luckily I'm blessed because I'm an ex-elite player who "gets" what EVE is supposed to be. Basically you are free to play a role of your choosing and play it they you want without character based restrictions (within reason). This whole "this is your life so live it" philosophy is in essence what the game brings to the MMORPG market. Very niche, very different and above all very very well done.
Yes the graphics may very quickly become "functional" but they do exactly what they need to do for the game. User interaction maybe "IRC" like but it's very very flexible and very very well thought out. Beats the hell out of every other game i've seen a text chat in. You can also email people within game which is a nice feature. Joining a Corporation will help the game feel less "single player" and will allow you to be part of a group/clan in the same way that other games work. Even better to have people playing on ventrilo.
All in all after 2 days of EVE I actually "get" the game, but I still have a lot to learn about the universe i'm in. See you out there people.
P.s. Nice post on the maths of voting ........ very well thought out
Some people like it, some people loathe it. Personally i love it. I just wish the game was easier on newbies in their first month or so. Im in my 16 month but i remember how clueless i was during the first weeks.

Gotta agree on that..
At first the game feels like you have to know a 2000 pages manual in your mind..
But if you give it a month you'll be set and have knowledge more that you could possibly know
As a sci-fi/space freak i know alot from other stuff so it wasn't that hard to reconize stuff.. but as for a hack and bash fantasy mmorpg gamer this is pretty much the hardest game you could ever play!
Lets set a scale from 1- 10.. WOW is placed 4 and EVE 9.. that would give you a idea how advanced this game is
But don't give up and play hard, you'll love the game!
We shall all die in vain.. you decide how!
On the subject of EVE Fanbois skewing the results, just read through the reviews of EVE and of GW/WOW/etc.
Many of the WOW and GW reviews are of people changing their review from high to low where as EVE reviews are resoundingly positive.
I played this game for an hour, I got so bored I felt like crying, definetely not my thing. The character portrait creation thing at the start was cool though
Have played:
UO, WOW, COH/V, EQ2
Currently playing:
Age of Conan (EU)
the skill system is perfectly fine. it stops the new players crying that they cant catch up to the older players.
you may point out that it only takes 2 months for a skill, when youve already done the lower levels of that skill, which only take a matter of hours. and even then 2 months for a skill is rare, and the maximum new players will have for skill training time is about 12 days, until they actually have a year of playing time behind them.
What belongs up top are games well done for a niche target audience, it's just too bad that EVE is the only MMO that really fits that category, even if you don't like EVE you have to respect what CCP tries to do. Now I do think GW is a nice game, but having GW on this site you might as well put Battlefield 2 up there too. Anyways EVE got a 8.0 from me so I think it's over rated by .4 .

Eve for me, has been a double edged sword of OMG this is awesome to you've GOT TO BE shittin me
For a low end pc, it actual runs fairly decent.
Except ya know, the lowest resolution is 1024. I know, 1024 has been the "standard" for a few years now, I also know my monitor can display it however for the fact that if you've seen 1024 on a monitor made for 800x600..Yea super tiny text, I have to squint to read in the game. Literally.
When in a ship, you need some kind of keyboard control for the movement. I know practice would make it better on the mouse, but 99% of the time i find myself just sitting here using a mouse, and never (if ever) using the keyboard. That, and I also manage to always overshoot my target by a few thousand kilometers by the time I make the ship stop, or hang a louie back around. Maybe you can bind keys to some of these, hell after ya know the 42 hour tutorial makes it kinda tedious..
You never get to ya know, leave your ship. Huge space stations and planets and stuff to explore, but you're stuck inside a pod, inside a ship. Joy.
The good things? I love the ships. They are beaufitifully made. Some give you that Star Trek kinda feel to them, others look like their kinda fallin apart like in Firefly. Love it. Love the effects of warp drive, and minning and stuff like that.
Gui is nice. Takes time to learn, but its nice. If it went to a smaller resolution like i mentioned the gui would be perfect. It's asthetically pleasing.
Nitpicks that have no bearing on it being a good game or not? Get rid of Warp drive and stop ripping off Star Trek. Get rid of Stargates, obvious answer why. Get rid of jumpgates, less you want to jump out of one to find the Whitestar fleet waiting for you ;o seriously though, dont knock off other great sci fi's. roddennbury may not have created the theory of warp but damn he put it in the public light, first. same with the other two. I could see if it was like just Warp speeds, but you've got everything. I'm waiting to jump into a sector to find Trans Warp Conduits or Photonic Energy Ships O_O
