What do you mean you don't tab target? Do you use a controller or something because it's hard enough pressing 1-7 (-10 later on) I can't imagine having to aim manually to..
You don't need to target enemies to hit them in this game. Least not with melee. If your opponent is in the arc of the swing, they get hit, whether you have them targetted or not or even some other opponent entirely.
With ranged though, if there's a way to aim manually, I haven't figured it out.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Thank god I choose Ranger because I think ranged in this game is brilliant.
As soon as an enemy is heading towards me I have plenty of time to think of something.
If he's getting near and I'm out of specials and energy I can still easily evade him while still shooting him.
I held out for 5 minutes against a enemy twice my level which could kill me in one hit.
I also have a sword..
I can't stand it and don't understand how you can evade being while being so close.
I have this standard attack (slot 1) which is a combo and double tapping to do a roll simply does not work half the time so I get hit. Even if it did work, I would still have to pay EXTREMELY attention to when the enemy is facing me or is about to strike. None of this realy matters when playing ranged.
When playign ranged:
-Do not let the enemy get close. This doesn't work with melee because you have to be clsoe to hit him.
- If the enemy is close, run, evade whatever like a mad man, your shots will still hit. This doesn't work with melee because you have to face the enemy and be close to it.
So explain melee to me because I would like to use my sword once in a while and get close and personal.
Thats wierd man, my ranger does more dps melee then ranged.....sure ranged is more easy to kill something but my victims realy get into trouble when they come within melee range......it's then that the (burst) pain realy starts.
Now if you've ever fought this boss, you'd think this boss would be impossible to beat with just 2 people. But last night we did just that. With me playing the warrior and "tanking" him. I put quotes around tanking because it wasn't conventional tanking where you just soak damage and keep argo.
I was dodging every time he slams his foot down and placing banners. The one other person who was attacking him was safely dpsing him from a distance. Took us a good 40 minutes to kill him.
My point? Meele doesn't suck. If both of us had tried to range him it would've been much more difficult as he would've chased us down/reset (which happened before in another zone!). You just need to learn how to play meele. Not to mention that some bosses you simply can't range them or stay at range distance. *cough* certain branded spider queen in level 50-60 zone*
Lol, how long did it take you in 2? Like 2 hours to kill it? Was annoying sometimes at that boss, that you got stopped by terrain while dodging and still took the hit, but it's true, his attacks are very predictable and can be avoided usually.
I dunno about Rangers, but with the thief I think the double pistol is terrible unless your in a group. If you get crippled you get become very vulnerable if you are taking on a group of mobs. Plus I alwayls seem to run out of stamina . Secondly, it's fairly hard to get into the sweet spot to kite and dodge mobs and some mobs will be to fast and agile to kite and some areas are just too small. Personally, when I'm in a group or PvP I use my ranged purely because of the number of finnishing moves that set has. But overall, for the thief I prefer sword and dagger, lots of nice combos and evades and you can jump in and out of fights easily.
People realy need to state whether they think of PvE or PvP.
All those who claim pure melee is great and everyone else must suck at it are full of shit mildly put.
In PvP everyone going full melee I can just laugh at, going hybrid myself and switching between range/melee or just stay range if they suck closing distance.
In PvE melee is by far the fastest way to kill, that is if mob doesn't kill you faster. As soon as you need to dodge around dps gets lost and running in a circle with range weapon becomes the better choice usualy.

I dont agree. When soloing I start kiteing with 2 pistols, then change to sword + knife for some AoE DPS until I take too much damage, then roll out with a dodge and finnish with 2 pistols. It is very effective.
I think it depends a lot on your playstyle. I love shifting between 2 sets.

When you are alone that is basically true, but as soon as you get 2 one ranged and one melee is far more effective.
My thief will either do the dodge melee game while my buddy ele or necro will do full ranged DPS or I have a warrior doing that while I fire my 2 pistols at maximum DPS.
And I also blind the oponents which makes melee a lot more effective.
I would say both ways have its advantage in PvE and neither is best in all situations. I usually switch between them a lot.

Yes that's why I said "if I kill it faster than it kills me". If dodging/tactical skills are required than there are many variations for different classes / builds, obviously.
Even more so with more people, because you can eventualy just zerg everything.
Another example when you can't solo melee is grinding mobs for mats, AoEing 5+ packs. No room for melee because they burst you quickly and you have to run rircles spamming your range aoe, than maybe jump in melee to finish it.
Using bow to add some poison and then switch to D/D. Thief is all about surprising your enemy. Walking in and out of stealth.
Thiefs really got some good escape moves, when you are close to death.
Agreed, easily my favorite class.
I been considering trying a similar build myself but I am also started to level up my warrior so I decided to keep things simple and be happy with the build I already mastered.

Dodging and tactical skills are always needed, at least once you leave the noob zone.
But yes, when you are fighting several mobs you need to be very tactical but that is just right.
My warrior however can actually take a lot n melee even if I move around and dodges a lot. But then again, greatsword is almost ranged combat.
Warriors seem to be okay in melee most of the time.
For a rogue it can be tricky though. With Signet of Shadows, 5 points in Acrobatics and a bow (Disabling Shot) you can kite pretty much anything to death. But in melee with Sword+Pistol you can kill much faster. Pistol Whip does great damage and it's melee range AoE because it's actually a sword skill. So melee is preferable when you know you CAN take an occasional blow. (Sometimes it's hard to tell. I thought wolves were nothing special but then I tried fighting 3 at once and they ripped me to shreds in no time.)
Usually when in group I just pop Pain Inverter for retaliation and spam Pistol Whip. I dodge what I can (dodge also gives me stacks of Might) and self-heal when I get hit.
The biggest problem with melee for me is camera. It's not always easy to see what you're attacking and it might be even harder to notice that big attack coming your way.

For a rogue it's hard to melee against bosses (champions) as they simply do too much damage. Regular elites (veterans) are usually easy and trash mobs generally won't all aggro on you when you're in a group so you can easily AoE 3-4 of them.
Against bosses I usually stay ranged and dodge/kite/stealth when they aggro on me. I also use Thieves Guild (eltie skill) to help spread aggro.

It's you (and others), but not everyone. I personally like melee just fine with a character spec'd in Toughness and Vitality, though they aren't 100% necessary.
Bursty mobs and the dodge mechanic look good on paper. But it gimps melee and just becomes just plain tedious in repetition.
I disagree. Traditional MMO combat is tedious and repetitive. You have your rotation and you perform it a billion times until your build changes after some patch or until you quit.
Can't speak for all classes but at least thief in GW2 is anything but tedious. Especially in melee. You can always steal something nice like elixir of heroism or plasma or whirlwind. You can make a build where dodge buffs your movement speed and damage. You need to know when to dodge and when to fight. Sometimes it's a DPS race but who cares when health regens so fast after combat.

funny thingy is that I use my necro more in melee than with ranged staff xDDD
Anyone who is having issue playing melee...it is you and not the game!
I rolled an Elimentialist duel daggers and having a blast. Just got done doing AC having only died 2 times.

I play a D/D - Bow Thief and i really enjoy it.

No not on heavy armor class and defense-ish builds.

haha,
as a warrior I found Hyenas by far the most dps intensive, almost ridiculous, to the point I considered it could be a bug.
Wolves are not much better tho.
My warrior still do a lot better when I kite, but I dont have to dodge as much then.
Then again, I use a zweihander instead of a shield, greatsword just is so fun.
Yeah, that is indeed weird. For some reason are leopards not so tough... Bears are rather dangerous as well.
Yes, melee does have issues in GW2. In PVE for me. It's partly due to the amount of burst damage mobs do and the dodge mechanic.
I play a thief. In large groups I simply have to go ranged. Small scale events and soloing/gathering/pvp I can melee.
From a PVE perspective, I HATE what the dodge mechanic does to melee. In PVP, it rocks.
Bursty mobs and the dodge mechanic look good on paper. But it gimps melee and just becomes just plain tedious in repetition.
