I found the game for a pretty low price and decided to just go for it, been wanting to play an FF mmo for years, just couldn't stand the gender lock and graphics in XI.
Has final fantasy xiv got gender lock? Like do warriors have to be males, mages have to be females etc?
And! Does the game feel smooth and resposive right now? Or should I wait for 2.0 before activating my account and my 30 days?

Thanks, purchased. Now I'm in the boat as you.. should I wait for 2.0 or not.
The only gender lock was female-only Mithras, and male-only Galkas. Any character in the game could be any job they wanted, regardless of race or gender.
Currently in FFXIV, you can only create female Miqo'te and male Roegadyn. However, in 2.0, this gender lock is being removed.
That would depend on who you are and what your expectations are.
The game runs MUCH better now than it did at launch. Not only that but there are better tutorials. In some cases I even think they went over board but that's just me.
For instance, I tend to like to discover how things work in these games and in the originally launched game there is an initial tutorial instance where you have two characters lying on the ground after a crash. And you discover them. That's it. In the current version a tutorial message tells you what you need to do. Not a big thing but it is different.
But getting back to my initial sentence; if you are a person who has high expectations or perhaps you are very literal, not a forest from the trees person, etc, you will go into the game and see a very bleak world. There are definitely people who play and who seem pretty hard core about it but the game world is very silent. Nothing on chat. I imagine that is because people are in guilds.
Some things will seem weird like the areas where people sell things and you walk into a lodge like building to see quiet mannequins, each one having something for sale. It almost seems like you were wisked to a twilight zone dimension and you are the only one alive.
But agian there are people here.
The art design is really beautiful and truly inspired. the level of detail on the avatars is amazing. The leveling can seem kooky for a new player but I imagine if you dive into the main story and just take it for an eccentric game experience you will have a better time of it. I love logging in for the short amounts of time that I do and just breathing it all in, doing or learning one new thing, etc.
to my sensibilities it seems like a powder keg of potential. Some can deal with that while others will be more focused on the flaws and might say "ok, what else do you have".
Going into the game now, even with all their fixes, will require patience as well as you probablly finding a guild if you require a more social experience.
Starting now can get you ahead of the curve when the new experience starts but it might also leave you cold.
Or, it might leave you wanting for more and yearning to see what the new experience brings.

Thanks for the link. Better safe than sorry and ready for 2.0, in any case.
Only 10 copies or so left, guys. Get 'em while you still can.
Activate your subscription so that you can get into the beta for free, but don't jump into it now. Wait for Reborn... don't ruin it for yourself by trying to get into the game right now.
Thanks for the reply. I've decided to wait for 2.0. I think that any impression I get now would be kinda pointless, whether it's good or bad. The game is supposed to be changing so much that playing it now is probably just a waste of time. I'm in no rush and have plenty of other games to play in the near future (TL2 and Borderlands 2 for example). Most people already playing plan on starting again in 2.0. I'll save it for the real deal, then I'll know exactly where I stand with the game for sure.
