"Is Square-Enix issuing a termination order for store copies of Final Fantasy XIV? That's the disturbing rumor that's emerged today, as a retailer on the NeoGaf forums posted an email stating that the company has levied a decree to get rid of the remaining stock.
The email states, "Square is discontinuing Final Fantasy XIV. They will be doing a field destroy credit of $16.00 each."
This move may be in preparation for the upcoming version 2.0 of the title, now called A Realm Reborn, which is slated to release for both PC and the PlayStation 3. A Realm Reborn will actually remove some of the content from FFXIV, possibly necessitating a new product, or else Square-Enix may just be looking at rolling out a new package for the relaunched title.
When asked about the rumor, the company declined to address the email, and stated that the beta will happen later this year."
New standard and collector's edition boxes? New goodies? Yes? No? Maybe?

means it's coming alot sooner then later
Well they did say for some time now that the quests/story line in FF xiv 1.0 won't be in 2.0.
My questions are 1. Will they make player buy ff xiv 2.0 who already have paid for 1.0? and 2. when is the release date? If they are shutting down servers soon is there a period of no ff xiv until 2.0 launches?
I really can't imagine ever giving this company another chance.
That game had to be the biggest screw up in this entire gaming genre's history yet.
But then again, I've never understood much about FF and its fians.
SE is actually a pretty good company, one game fuck up ruins their entire rep? it doesn't sound that right to me.
2) not sure yet on the release date. there will be a period of no FFXIV for a few months... Alpha > beta > open beta/trial period > release the game on pc/ps3. the release is supposed to be winter/january-ish. they said they're on time also
Im pretty sure people who have already purchased the game dont need to re-buy 2.0....though I havnt played in a while and havnt kept up with how they are doing this, I would assume it will just be a patch upgrade for previous users. I think the whole, destroying old boxes thing is to give the game new life....a new face, a game "reborn".
Making people re-buy the game would seem like a big middle finger. They seem to want to get our trust back and have been putting an effort into making the game what we really want. I dont think they expect us to re-purchase it....its not an expansion, its a revamp. Thats how I see it anyway.
that's exactly what it is. except it's a rebuild.. if we're being technical about it
Are they allowing those that have the game beta access? Just find it odd that there will be a period of no "open" ff xiv in the transition to 2.0.
basically from what i understand they have to transfer all of the characters data over, which could take up to a month. in order to keep people from making progress on their main character, only to have it roll back once 2.0 comes out. they're shutting the servers down for awhile and only running beta tests up until the launch. what i also read is that those who are playing the game will have priority but we're just not sure on the details as to the beta access.
the reason why the data is being xfered over is because its a completely new server structure, database structure. it's not just a matter of updating the game. literally the entire backend of the game has been rebuilt from scratch.
There's isn't going to be a patch, there will be a completely new client to download. It will be free for those who already purchased the game, and it will become available for download in October, according to their "road map". Assuming the road map is still viable, and that they are on schedule, beta and trials will start in November, and the game will be released sometimes early next year.
I'm too lazy to look up the links right now, but check the lodestone to find the road map. Also, find the article about the future of FFXIV if you want it more detailed.
They've opened the possibility to the community to keep the current XIV up even after they've officially ended XIV's progress.
Here's a quote from Yoshi-P on the subject:
"Grand Finale for the Current Version of FINAL FANTASY XIV
The grand finale is right around the corner, as the Seventh Umbral Era descends on Eorzea. A final save maintenance for current version character data is scheduled for November 1, 2012, followed by all Worlds coming down on November 11, 2012 at 0:00am (PST) / 8:00am (GMT). Then at 2:00am (PST) / 10:00am (GMT), also on November 11, we’re planning to run a live Letter from the Producer.
The event of all the Worlds coming down signifies the curtain closing on the current story of FFXIV. Your character data will be preserved with the final save maintenance on November 1, and transferred to A Realm Reborn. (The only change to your data will be the coordinates where your character appears after logging in.)
The plan is to completely shut down the current version after that point, although that may change depending on how you guys respond to a little poll we have.
Basically, what we want to know is, do you want to keep playing the current version even after we bring all the Worlds down?
We can bring the servers back up after a few days, and you’ll be able to keep playing the game just like normal...but your final save data will remain unchanged.
Only the character data saved during the November 1 maintenance will be carried over to A Realm Reborn. The devs will also be focusing on the new version, and there will be no more patches or bug fixes for the current version after this point. But it seems a real shame to take away a venue where players can get together as a community. If we brought the servers back online, you would, however, need to ignore the inevitable story contradictions. Considering these factors, players that have an active subscription as of September 30, 2012, would play for free.
FINAL FANTASY XIV is as much yours as it is ours, and we’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject.
Keep an eye on the coming FINAL FANTASY Anniversary Event, TGS, the alpha test, and the non-stop, we-break-for-no-one journey towards FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn!
See you next letter, or on the forums!"

Good question. I would like to know as well. I'm sure we will get more tidbits here and there in the coming months.
