Is Fallen Earth secretly the best mmo in the universe?

NagilumSadowNagilumSadow Member UncommonPosts: 318

Even if you're a 100% f2p individual, Fallen Earth offers a massive amount of mmo goodness. Also, if you are a crafting pack-rat, this is definitely the mmo for your perusal.

This is one of the few mmos wherein you can be a 100% crafter, 100% pvper, 100% explorer / scavenger (or any combination) with total satisfaction -- it represents exploration nook and cranny paradise. All this and in a seamless world.

Well, when I gave it a try (in the P2P days)  it was pretty fun, but as I moved into the 2nd half of the leveling curve I found it to be a wasteland. (literally).

I recall trying to join several long running guilds and found they were all in the process of collapsing because there wasn't enough to do at endgame to keep them subbed.

Things may have changed, this was a year or maybe two ago, but as it stands I can't play MMO's anymore without a solid endgame that I'm interested in.

The distinction is these are not the P2P days, which is a very important distinction now. Perhaps you should see the official FE blog to examine the changes?

It was a great game until they started redoing the combat system.  I quit playing when I was level 45,  a lot of stuff was added.  After it went free to play I logged in.   Found that all my skills were reset, and I would have to spend a lot of red chips and even possible 1 blue chip to relearn all the combat that I needed.

Buffs have changed, mutations have changed, and combat for sure is a lot different than it was before the added dead fall.

Sorry but gamers first seams to have taken something I really looked and made a mess of it.

    Nope.

With the combat revamp, everyone was given a respec injector ALONG with an injector that gave you all the skills you would normally have -- at their highest rank. I.e. you didnt need to pay to learn anything after you respecced, and you got all your skills at highest rank for free.

It has zero future.  The developers have some goofy hard on for PvP for whatever reason.

It needs more world and less of whatever else it is they're (not) doing.

They spent so much time adding schematics for crafting and have yet to make a reason for people to be crafters since everyone's product is absolutely identical.  A server only needs a small handful of active crafters.

My major gripe was that weapons not sure if it's also for armour but they don't drop from wildern not even from humans! you must craft everything or buy it from someone, it doesn't make any sense.

I played the game for a while at launch, and then played for a bit after F2P.  The problems I had with it were these:

    1) It wasn't sandbox enough.  They have the right world design for sandbox, and the right crafting, but in all other ways it's a lackluster themepark.  Quests were mostly uninspired and oldschool.

    2) Combat was clunky and mostly boring.

    3) The starter zones in the desert just get old.  There's really no sense of wanting to move out into the larger world and explore because the game doesn't really entice you to do so.  As such, you end up with this feeling of having to go from desert zone to desert zone, and they all feel the same.  One poster above called it a "wasteland", and I agree.  While I know the theme is "wasteland" it should also feel like a compelling and fun game.

    4) The skill system was very unintuitive, and at the time at least, there was a policy of "no respecing" so in the beginning you are left with this feeling that you may be building a throw-away character that you built wrong.  Trouble is, it takes forever to level up a character, so the thought if having to do it all over again to do it "right" sucked.

I liked the way Star Wars Galaxies handled respeccing.  You didn't just get it for coin or for free.  There was a penalty, and you had to re-level some of your skills.  If you switched from combat to non-combat, you started from scratch.  Luckily it didn't take long to re-level, so though it was a penalty, people did it all the time.  That was also tied to the fact that you had ONE character slot back in pre-CU.

I still think it's a pretty cool game, all things considered.  However as a sort of "sandpark" it was not enough of either sandbox or themepark to be all that compelling for a long period of time.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

OK well I did not get that injector, I was told by other lightbears that I should have had one in my mail. I never did see it. I logged in a few times and just really never put the effort into email cs about it.

I always found the concept of FE interesting, but never played it for the following reasons:

    1) It had a preorder with items that seemed you couldn't get in-game in any other way (that may not be 100% correct but it is how it seemed). Since I refuse to preorder and therefore would literally never have certain items that turned me off. That actually prevents me from getting into several MMO games that now try to bribe people into preordering. I'm fine with early access. I'm fine with some sort of XP boost for faster leveling. I'm even fine with being able to use a mount at level 1 instead of level 15. That is because I can still achieve all of the same things without preordering but preordering still gets some "advantage" to bribe people to do it.

    2) It was taking way too long to go to the free trial right into subscribing with no box fee. I will pay subscription games and even pay for multiple subscription games at one time. I won't, however, pay the box fee. It is an antiquated concept and too many companies put out crap that I'm not willing to risk my $60.

    3) Instead of hurrying up with the free trial into subscription model it went full out F2P and I personally have zero interest in the F2P model.

It was a sad chain of events because the concept was one I love, post-apocalyptic wasteland style game and an MMO to boot. Just never had the right setup for me to jump in and try it out.

It did sound promising so I tried it but the combat and UI was way too clunky for me to stick with it. Also I am not so much into crafting so there should be an easier way to buy stuff from other crafters, or maybe there was and I did not know as I only played about a week or so.

Also the skill system was a bit confusing with not so much explanation given about what good a skill is. Finally, what made me quit, was then I did the instanced PvP thing. It took forever to queue for, like an hour, and then I was constantly facerolled by others without having much time to react.

All in all the game was a dissapointment and now that it is F2P I am reluctant to try it again as I dont like the payment model. More often than not it turns into a Pay to Win type of game.

Well, there haven't been any for years.  I played SWG from beta to NGE.  Even played some later NGE when they started putting some of the features back in they removed.

I would like to see the spiritual successor to SWG.  Right now there are two games that look good to me.  The Repopulation is looking great, and I'm watching Arch Age.  Pathfinder Online remains to be seen.  There's not much else out there on my radar at this point.  In the mean time I am casually playing TSW and GW2

I've tried just about all of them including Xsyon and Mortal.  I put $80 of Kickstarter funds into The Repopulation.

I think the biggest failure of this game was the community.  Everything seemed to work, just not very well.  I liked crafting ATV's and gas to sell to others.  Upon reaching mid-high levels you just got ganked over and over.  The Community is what really killed this game.

They days of having FFA PvP are long gone.  Since noone these days has a sense of honor like in the old days.  In Ashen Empires, you used to have guilds that would police areas, we didn't need guards.  The PvP server there is now dead because of greifers.  DAoC even had some honor to it.  Now people will break into your keep and not kill the commander, just camp you as you rush in to try and defend it.  UO had people that would help you if you got ganked or griefed or corpsecamped.  That's all long gone now.

All FFA PvP games just turn into lame gankfests that noone really enjoys for a long period of time.

I haven't tried Xsyon, but it looked a little overly barebones. Repopulation looks like it has alot of potential; I don't mean to be trivial, but there is something I don't like about the general look of that mmo.

For an indy game, The Repopulation feature list is incredible.  I think one of the things that is bound to suffer some for indy games, is art. They just can't afford a team, or have a library of assets.  I think it looks pretty good though, and if the gameplay delivers, I won't need it to be cutting edge graphically.  Hell, I played Tribes 1 for a looog time.  Talk about ugly, but was the best FPS game I ever played.

That is one way to look at the f2p model.  I Prefer to see f2p as a better way to "vote" for what you want with your wallet. Developers tend to quickly get the message that way (imo).
