Grinding out levels - Questions

ohhhmyyyyohhhmyyyy Member UncommonPosts: 34

Hello all,

There's something I'm a little confused about with the game. So far I'm just following along with the personal storyline quests for a few different races. The game usually gives you a suggested minimum level to complete a story quest - it's rare that I'm at the right level for it. I understand that one should probably do dynamic events and "heart quests" to get some levels under their belt so that they can meet the suggested minimum level to do a story quest.

My confusion is as follows: I've noticed with two characters now that around levels 11-13 (I haven't gotten anything higher than 16) you will need to grind out some of the aforementioned things to get your levels. Right now, as a human, I'm not seeing anything for levels 13 and 14 in terms of heart quests. Should I be heading to other race's starting areas to do theirs for my exp? I did that by accident on a level 16 character I have, and that was completely because I was lost and just roaming around and ended up in another race's starting area.

Should I be looking for dynamic events that I've completed previously and repeating them for exp? I am wondering if that's what the original intention was by the developers - to have people repeat content to progress the storyline.

I've noticed with the heart quests that you're not able to do them more than once for exp, but maybe I'm missing something or misinterpretting the information I'm getting.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Honestly the human zones seem a bit sparse compared to others. You aren't alone in running into that problem with a human. Few things you can do though:

    1. Repeat DEs

    2. Do some WvW

    3. Go to other racial zones

    4. Work through it and do the higher level content since it evens out later

Can't really say one is better than the other. Really up to you.

I worked through it myself but that may not be the best avenue for everyone. Does give you a higher chance to get better loot though. On the downside you don't have a lot of room for error with mobs or veterans since they can hit hard.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Adventure, the heart quests are merely guides is all. You will need to do other things as well.

The DEs do change and are not always exactly the same.

Remember you can go to other areas and explore them!

Don't get stuck in the WoW mentality that you have to finish one area before moving on.

Pretty much anything you do in the game will give you XP. How you go about earning it is down to you.

Craft? Grind mobs? Run events? Explore? Go to other areas? Personal story? Do a you please.

There is a slight XP slump leaving the newbie area (generally around the 13-16 mark) but you can get over this hump with a little DE running or crafting etc. or you can just head off to another races starting area. There is by far enough content in the game for you to never have to grind, you just have to choose what it is you want to do :)

Ok. I mean, as far as in game npc dialogue and such, there were no indicators to go to other races starting zones - so I wasn't sure if I was doing "the right thing." I will most likely end up going to another race's starting area to do their heart quests/de's and then warping back to my capitol city to finish up my storyline stuff.

I'm finding the questing to be a little jarring - having to warp back and forth between my capitol city to the burgs and villas far away from the capitol to get to the suggested minimum level each time I want to see more of what's going on with the story.

    Thank you for your suggestions.

Just wander around the other races' starter zones, go and collect the skill points from em, and do any DEs that you come across, and some hearts too, you will easily outlevel your story quests.  Also getting 100% in an area (finding all WPs vistas POIs ect) gets you ALOT of exp, money and some nice items.

Oh wow, I didn't know about that. Now I'm going to make it more of a point to get those vistas lol - thanks :D

Heart quests are really just a guide, if you feel like they're a grind I'd recommend skipping them since that would get boring. Most of them end up completed by accident anyway by the time you finish an event. My suggestion to you is to craft; go out into the world and gather from iron/wood/plant nodes and participate in any events you find along the way. While you're at it, 100% the map, leaving the hearts for last. I promise you, by the time you finish that, you'll be overleveled for your storyline. I spent my time exploring and crafting, I was level 40 before I got my storyline past the level 19 part. My storyline is currently sitting somewhere in the 50s, and I'm 70. I'll get to it eventually ;P

Also, at lvl 60, if you level your cooking to 400, which is not hard to do, you can buy almost all the ingredients on karma and you can get to 70 just through that. You can do it earlier, but that is the optimal level to do it imo.

You can also keep wandering around and doing DEs until you level up. Remember one thing, you get deleveled to the area's intended level, but your XP and karma rewards are apropiate for your real level. If you wanted, you could just stay in a single area and level all the way to 80 (would be rather tedious, though).
