With what's currently avaliable on the market and bigger competition in the industry any single MMORPG that will cost you more than $50 a year is ripping you off.
I refuse to be the cow and I'm glad all the experience in the genre helped me find products with close to equal value with reasonable prices.
That's one of the main issues MMORPG's like WOW playerbase is declining and it's not surprising at all. You can't have forever a successful, growing game if you invest back only 1 out of 5 dollars you earn from it.
I'm very glad to see that thx to wise consumers like me companies becoming far more reasonable and realistic with their asking price for their product. SOE with DCUO is best example.
The game launched with $50 box cost and month of free time then charging $15 monthly fee. I would never get involved in the game, but since it was Jan 2011 and with a promo $35 for box and a month free + being a huge fan of the DC universe IP kinda persuaded me.
Today DCUO is accessable for totally free. It has DLC (mini expansions) with new content and they are about to release a 5th DLC this month. Thx to their other promo last month with 50% off DLC I managed to get 2 DLC for only $5. One I got for free with extra station which I got for free back in the days when I purchased it and only paid $5 for the 2nd DLC.
Since now is September 2012 from January 2011 they released 5 DLC. which means they're releasing every 4 month new content/expansion that cost me $10. So overall in the long run I would enjoy a high quality, fully voiced MMORPG with great graphics, raids, PvP, solo content and so much more for only $30 a year. Not to mention how great, fresh and innovative the combat is.
For a former WOW player thats a huge step forward since WOW requires monthly fee + expansion fee, all in all total I was looking to spend $200 a year on average counting $14 a month, not $15 with expansion coming on 2 years, yup see how much I'm saving.
DCUO and WOW is only my experience from what I've been involved with recently. I'm glad that I help push this genre forward by spending my $ wisely as well as many others. 2012 definetely pushed the genre forward significantly from what we've seen so far.

That is because the OP does not value his time.
in the past year, I have played AOC (very little), LOTRO and DDO. All of which are free to play.
DDO is a really solid game and a lot of fun.
That said, WOW is simply a magnitude better. I do not have enough hours to play both DDO and WOW a lot.. so for me, the quality of WOW is worth the $15, even though I could have fun for free in DDO.
If I sell you a porsche for $10, but offer to give you a ford Fiesta for free.. which would you take? I guess if you only have $5 to your name, you would say the Fiesta... and then cry that anyone who bought the Porsche is an idiot, right?
Azrile is 100% correct. I play the best games I can, period. If you figure the ammount of time I play MMOs (at least 20 hours a week), we're looking at 20 cents per hour for a subscription. Thats less than I pay for movies, television, books ... pretty much any of my forms of entertainment.
50$...how much entertainment will 50$ buy?...
One night at the bar?
A few movies at the movie theatre? (granted you don't pay for a date)
Almost buy you a new video game? (maybe a used one)
You could go bowling 5x maybe...
You could pay a portion of your cell phone bill...
Fill up your car with gas...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
You show me where I can spend $50 and get as much entertainment value, and for as long, as I do with the MMOs I pay per month?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Granted, a paid sub of $15 a month might run you nearly $200 a year. But you try to stretch $200 over an entire year as an entertainment budget.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I understand we do get "milked" sometimes so to speak, but for the price, I feel the entertainment value I receive is worth it.
How about those who spend over 40 hours a week playing MMOs? They may get their $15 worth in the first week, heck, maybe even the first day.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
You could throw in computer costs to upgrade parts and such, but you could equate that with fixing your car to get you to said places of entertainment.
Personally...I think it is worth it.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
Azrile is definitely 100% correct.
If what you are playing costs money and you are enjoying yourself then that expenditure is worth ANd is a wise use of money (taking into account that people are paying their bills, saving it a bit, etc.).
and 50 dollars a year is a bit more than 4.00 per month. I think I can swing that and a bit more.
If such a game existed. My subs are less than 15 per month and still not an issue.
It would be an issue if I was paying that and didn't like the games.
Conversely if I force myself to play a f2p that i really don't like then I don't really value my free time as much as I claim I do.

Haha, the OP does not value his time?
If I did not value my time I wouldn't be able to afford to enjoy to do things that I want like playing a MMORPG as much as I wanted every single day in the week for the entire year. The fact is I'm at advantage over you because I'm enjoying a MMORPG as much and even more than a previous MMORPG which cost me at least 5x more.
I've seen lots out there who drive porche and living in a basement with high debt on their back. Plz call me back when you can afford to play MMORPG's as a hardcore player and then you talk to me about MMORPG's and their quality and who values time more.
20 hours a week is the casual club.
Hahahah.. Yea...
PM before you report at least or you could just block.
You should be glad people aren't as cheap as you are or else the whole industry would collapse.
For 15$ a month you can be as hardcore a player as you want, period.
In a F2P game, with spending a max of 50$ per year you can only be so hardcore.
Unless you've found the holy grail of f2p mmo's that is LITERALLY free, 15$/mo wins...hands down...in the "hardcore' market.
But, what it comes down to is how you like your transaction model to be. I, personally, would rather play a game that I don't have to buy quests, levels, items, or whatever to enjoy. I prefer to play a game that allows me full access to it for one set payment. That, in addition to full access, provides me with content updates, maintenance, and assistance, should I require, for that same one set price. I will always, always prefer to pay just the 14$/mo. if I find an mmo that I want to play.
$15 to play a game is a bargain. Some people are just cheap and tightwads. Think about how long 15 would last you in say an arcade..Minutes. Most people play 4plus hours a day so they get thier money worth. I don't know about most of you but $15 to me is nothing so I could care less if I spend it. That is $180 per year to play a game or 3 PS3/Xbox games. Most gamers buy more than 3 titles a year. Also $15 a month is not a rip off when you consider that gaming is a hobby. Most people put time and money into hobbies that is just how it is.
Sure they could go the F2P route but some people like myself do not care about a sub. I will pay it I have no problems with that. Others are just cheap or poor or unwilling and that is fine. Besides a lot of F2P to get the best stuff you need to fork over $15 a month just to have access to the game for the most part. I wouldn't say I am being milked. If I thought that I would not play these kinds of games at all. I enjoy playing a game and I do not mind a sub fee.
You're putting a lot of effort into justifying what you spend vs others. Was this thread created to convince us or yourself?
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I didn't even read the original post because its blatantly obvious the OP has no knowledge of economics from the title alone.
Stopped reading.

If you have a hard time budgeting $15 a month + maybe 1 xpac a year maybe you should worry about making more money instead of playing video games.
Know who's being screwed? the people who only play "F2P" games then proceed to spend more than what a years worth of subs and xpacs would cost them in the cash shops. Thinking they 'outsmarted' those big ol' game companies and are more effecient than those silly 'subscribers.' And they do it to themselves.
"Best" games get old. Nothing last forever.
WOW is better .. but i have been playing it for a long time. I will not sub after my annual pass is up. It is better to play F2P games and hop around to get more varieties.
DCUO, LOTRO, DDO are not bad games. Even those not as good as WOW, it is boring to just play WOW. I mean, COD is a good shooter, but are you going to ONLY play COD and no other FPS? Of course not.
Personally I don't care if an MMO is charging $60 a month as long as it seems worth it to me. You deliver a game worth the price tag and I will gladly pay to play. You deliver rehashed stale garbage and price it at a premium I will walk away. I've passed on games simply because the value to ME wasn't there.
I mean heres some examples for me...
Skyrim - So much freaking content, a great deal of replay value, beautiful game, well done. $60 bucks... sweet now that was a bargain.
Two Worlds 2 - I have no idea what I was thinking. It was extremely glitchy, the content was a bit lacking, replay wasn't really there because I didn't really enjoy the first play through lol. $60 bucks... I got ripped off.
GW2 - I see no sign of me getting tired of this in the near future. Lots of replay value, beautiful game, well done, lots of content. $80 bucks because I got the digital delux. Complete steal imho. I wouldn't have mind paying a monthly fee at all or paying twice the box price for what I'm getting.
Age of Conan - Glitchy as hell, no direction, lacking in content, lacking in replayability, beautiful game, done ok. $60 bucks + $15 a month after... I felt ripped off with the free month so I quit.
Things have likely changed since I played several of these games but this was the state when I played them. I will pay for quality, I will pay extra for it. I will not pay a premium for a crappy product, if I can get a refund I most certainly will. I did for several games that just pushed it to far.
Do you want a medal for saying you play as much has you want, without paying much?
So for you 20 hours a week is casual club, so i will assume since you are proud saying you are a hardcore (time) player, you must played at least 40 hours a week. You do realise must of us has to work at least 40 hours a week..
So put it this way, to be able to play 40 hours a week and work 40 hours a week, i must be alone (family and friends take time) and of course i dont have really any other past time... So if i dont have a family to support or other vice who eat my money away, how can i be broke and considering 15$ a month is a rip-off?
Oh i got it the only way would be to work only maibe 20 hours week so i would be able to paid at least a room and some noodle and of course an internet connection... That would be paradise i would be able to played even more.. no wait but then i would be broke and 15$ a month would be too much to pay... So what to do? Yes..i will play f2p crap game and i will tried to convince others that im the genius because i save the sub fee and they are beeing milked for paying more than 50$ a years for video gaming...
Is that about it Op?
+1
I play both WoW and Rift mainly right now, but I also drop in from time to time to hang out with friends in lotro, ddo, and AoC. WoW probably is my number one, with Rift being close second. I just wish they could split thier expansions up a bit. I spent ~$250 this month for both expansions and subscriptions XD
Edit: I would probably take the fiesta, I've been a ford fan since my first car. I've never had a single one fail me yet with anything major. The worst thing to happen to me in a ford was a motor mount on my 2002 ford focus got wore out, but that's probably from me racing it than normal wear and tear lol. I just got the new Focus ST, and that thing is fast! I beat my dad's Camaro SS in a heads up race at track day last weekend
I agree with the OP. And umm, there are other things to life besides playing games. Just because one doesn't find a F2P game they don't like, doesn't mean others havent. Also, just because one chooses to pay $15 a month to play a friggin game, doesn't make one better than another. I despise that arguement, it's ridiculous. As a matter of fact, one can argue the opposite Just because you pay $15 a month to play wow and you like it, doesn't make it the best game ever. I can say i like a game that I don't have to pay a monthly subscription for and It's so much better than wow. In the end it's just what? An opinion. And the OP is entitled to his just as much as you are yours. He is not trolling, he gave details, and examples, and just mainly expressed what he thought. I think the troll term has been blown out of proportion and abused just as much as noob has. Just remmeber one thing people, on the internet, everybody is a troll, and at one point in evreybody's life, we have all been a noob. that is all
AMEN!!!!! Game on
