Okay so I DLd the game last night and started the tutorial. I dont think the interface is at all complicated BUT its an enormous amount of information to be had. I was struggling with it until I broke it down into sections. I can certainly see where the game will rapidly become a nightmare if the time isnt taken to go thru the tutorial. I only made it through about 50% last night. and at this point I wish they would have beefed up the skills section. and I wish flight was more hands on especially combat. However neither of them impeeded my sense of awe as I looked around the Solar system I was in.
The tutorial voice is nice but I feel like I should be paying her for sex with all that breathy European accent of hers.
I think I have a handle on basic flight, basic combat, basic mining, what I dont have a handle on is the skill trees, where I should be going what I should be doing etc. Thats going to take more time. As soon as I get out of Tutorial Im deffinately going to need a corp to help me out.

Well, the skills trees are fairly well indicated if you browse for them using the market interface. You can logically figure out whatever it is you will be needing/wanting next simply by drawing out a plan of what you want to do in EVE and then looking on market/purchasing your next skills to accomplish that goal.
Some skills can be useful for all jobs you could ever think of doing in EVE, especialy the "learning" skills. These are skills that increase your chracters starting attributes, therefore decreasing the amount of time required to train a skill.
Other than that, it is pretty straight foward ;
Corporation Management has all skills needed to run a corporation effectively.
Drones has all skills need to operate combat/mining drones (little bots to help you).
Electronics has every skill related to your ship's CPU needs and electronic warfare (EW).
Engineering has skills which allow you to better use your ships power grid/capacitor and modules.
Industry has skills which allow you to mine/refine/manufacture.
Gunnery has all skills related to turret warfare.
Leadership has skills which give bonuses when flying in gangs.
Learning has all skills related to making your general training faster.
Mechanic skills improve structure/armor, allow to use better modules and build advanced ship types.
Missile Launcher Operation has all skills related to missile launchers.
Navigation improves the modules/speed/efficientcy of flying those ships.
Science allows you to use advanced modules and do research.
Social skills are used for running missions, increasing your efficientcy with NPC agents.
Spaceship Command has all skills related to flying different ships.
Trade skills are used to increase your effectiveness when using the market.
Those are the 15 branches and you can decide for yourself which skills you will be needing/wanting to get. Certain skills, as forementionned are useful to all pilots in EVE, those would be skills in learning, navigation, electronics and engineering.
P.S. : Specializing in a single field will make you ALOT more effective and train up learning skills as quickly as possible if you plan on playing the game for a long time.
Edit : omfg the typo's ! the tipo's !

Just remember to try and do as many of your Learning skills asap (apart from Charisma). You will save time in the long run.
Theres a lot of freedom in Eve. Thats the best part of it. do whatever you want to train whatever you want to. Thats where the fun is. Youll soon start uderstanding what you want to train or not acording to your play style and module/Ship needs. Dont worry.
Dont join a corp until you understand how eve works.. they will prolly make a slave out of you and make you mine or go suicidal takkler.. some corps will just kill you for fun in space. So be careful. Understand game first, dont rush in and have fun
Get into a player run corporation as soon as you can.
Check the recruitment section of the Eve forum for corps to join. I would personally recommend Eve University (corp) to give you a good headstart in the game, but there are many others worthy of mention.
The best way of making money for relatively new characters is NPC trading, so get a hauler as soon as you can afford it and work some trade routes.
A common mistake is going full pelt to try and get a battleship, when you don't have the support skills to fly it effectively.
