Power supply

mlmwmlmw Member Posts: 29

I have an old Seasonic SS-600HT from a build I did back in 05 or 06, was wondering if I can reuse it with the following:

AsRock z77 Extreme4 - 2500k - Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb 1600 9-9-9-24

OCZ Vertex 4 128gb - XFX Double D HD 7950

Also, how are the parts? Would you change anything? Trying to keep it under $800CAD.

It might work, but I wouldn't recommend it, as it's a relic of another era.  What was fine in 2005 isn't necessarily fine today, and power supplies have come a long way since then.  Of that "600 W", only 432 W is on the +12 V rails, and that's divided exactly evenly between two separate +12 V rails.

Besides, power supplies tend to lose performance as time passes, so even if it could have handled the load while new, it's not automatic that it can still do so seven years later.  It doesn't have to cost a lot to get something new:

Thanks guys. Kinda sucks cause that PS only saw about a month or two of use.

Oh well, I can use it for something else, plus another $50 or so is nothing.

In spite of the similar name, the 750 W power supply you have is an entirely different line from the one I linked.  The 450 and 550 W XFX Core power supplies are based on the Seasonic S12II platform that is also sold as the Antec High Current Gamer line.  The 650, 750, and 850 W XFX Core power supplies are based on a different Seasonic platform that is also used in the Corsair TX V2 and NZXT Hale82 lines.

Quizzical would that PS be enough if I wanted to OC the CPU and GPU or would I need something bigger? And if so any recommendations?

If you're looking to overclock, then reusing the power supply you already have is pretty much out of the question.  I'd also go for something stronger than what I linked above:
