Okay so Im all of two days old and Im taking the community sugeestion and trtaining up my learning skills first while I run missions and mine for enough ISK to buy a Punisher. Okay enough babbling:

How many subsets in a skill? For instance Im training whatever subset was in my Learning Skill section... I think its called Iron Will. From the various posts Im gathering there are more subsets?

Or  Im training the skill Iron Will on the Learning Tree or branch, however you want to phrase it.

dont do learn trainning. Train whatever you want for 4 or 5 months. If you want to train learnings do it only to lvl 3 or 3, just basic trainning. If you going to spent time to fully train the learning will take you 2-3 months to do so and will kill the game fun for you.

LEarning are very importan later in the game when you start to train all those lvl 5 skills. then youll see there is a big diference trainning wihtou learning skill or with them. Basically learning increases your atributes, and thus making easier to learn the skills related to this or that atribute. Its just a 'time' thing tho, doesnt directly affect your playing in the game. Only skills do.

My sugestion to you: Make a Industrial char.. go mine get ISK as faster as you can. When you have like 1Bilion isk, check eve forums and buy a 10M SP char with 1B isk. CCP alows legit in game buying of chars. a 10M SP char will have like 9 months of trainning already done..

As you said, your term "subset" is not entirely on spot. What you call subset IS the skill. So for example the Learning skill set/category/tree/branch includes: Learning, Iron WIll, Spatial Awareness, Instant Recall, ... and some others (11 Total. 2 for each of the 5 attributes and the skill "Learning").

Note that some skills have the same name like their "parent". So eg. there is a skill called Electronics, which is in the Electronics skillset. the same with eg Gunnery, Science, etc.

And, yes usually there are more skills in such a category/set, in some less in some more, there is no fixed number, though, if I am correct, Gunnery or Spaceship Command has most skills and Leadership or Mechanic the least. The best is to check the market in game. After opening the market go to the "browse" tab (upper left), and then click on the "skills" menue. There you can see all categories ingame as well as all skills that are generally available within those categories.

In the market you can also plan your skill training very well. If you know what you want to be able to use, you just check the skill requirements of it and then trace back what skill(s) those skills need and so on. After I played the game for a few days, I sat down and looked through all equipment, what it does and what skills I'd need, and noted down my whishlist. Took me a few hours but was worth it.

The higher you can bear to train the learning skills the better it is for you in the long run.. But you have to balance being able to do stuff against that long term investement.

I would much rather make the initial investment so that life gets easier later in the game.  Right now Im running missions/mining for isk so I have "training" time to burn imo.  After all once I buy the ships Ill be back to broke and need to get more isk to outfit the ship.  given my gaming schedule the training time doesnt affect me that much after all I can always log in and start my training then go do some of that stuff on the "Honey Do" list.

Of course running thru the required skills for the ship and its subsequent equipment is a good idea as well... I think thats where I will have to balance myself.

In total, there are 11 skills. Some like Clarity you cant learn until another skill is lvl 5. For a start, I have these ones training up

Also not that I am no where near done with them :( Still going to take a while, but I am trying to get my Perception skills up, Spatial Awareness and Clarity to drop the training times down on SpaceShip command, Gunnery and Missile skills.

Get that instant recall up - it'll help you train the other learning skills faster.

When you check the required attributes tab on a given skill, it shows the main attribute that affects training time and also the secondary attribute.  For just about all learning skills, the primary attribute is memory.

Thats a good idea. What ive heard that is a good way to go, train up your learningskills high enough in the beginning, Maybe not to lvl 5, but to 4(well its your choice). Under this training time you collect isks by doing missions, rat hunting, trade or mine and sell minerals. And this also give you time to think on what your goal will be with that character.

    Ok,

here are my suggestions regarding training skills for you. They are suggestions, but are basically the way I done it.

Firstly train yourself to frigate lvl 3.  Then train any skills you can buy to lvl 1. I would suggest making sure you get the basic skills in each set to lvl one. For example, get skills like electronics, mechanic, engineering etc to lvl 1. All of them. You will need these no matter what you end up doing and taking them to lvl 1 usually takes 30-45 mins each one. When these are done (they will allow you to get a decent frig and equip it reasonably well)  Get your frig of choice, and top up with any skills you need to fly it ok and be reasonably ok with fitting. So make sure you can fit an afterburner, a decent small gun/missile, shield and cargo expander. Don't go overboard, get just enough so you can equip your frig well enough to last till your learning is done. Give it a few days at the most. Now it is time for the crap bit. The learning skills.

Now it's time to focus on your learning skills. You have trained enough skills to get a half decent frig to mooch about in, do lvl 1 missions etc to get the money coming in while you get your learning done. So..

First thing is to make sure you buy all the basic learning skills that you don't have. Just buy the ones you don't have. They are :-

    Analytical Mind (Intelligence)

    Empathy (charisma)

    Instant Recall (Memory)

    Iron Will (Willpower)

    Learning (Improves all training times)

    Spatial Awareness (Perception)

Get all these to lvl 1. Even Charisma. Now you need to concentrate on the ones that will cut your train times. As your doing the learning skills, the most important one of all is memory. Second important is intelligence. Third is Learning. So. Train Instant recall to lvl 2, then analytical mind, then learning. Then goto lvl 3 on them all. Of course real life interferes so you will have to use common sense how you do it. But the aim is to get these 3 skills to lvl 5 as fast as you can.

When your at lvl 5, there are advanced skills to buy for Memory and intelligence. So buy those and take them up to lvl 4.

Ok now your done. From now on, anything in the learning tree you train (and many others) will be training at quickest time. So now you have got these done. Whew. It's a pain in the arse, but trust me sooooooo worth it in the longer term. Now you get the others done. Perception is the next important one to get to lvl 5, along with Willpower as a secondary. Get these to lvl 5, then buy the advanced skills for those and get those to lvl 4 same as before. In between, when it is convenient, get charisma up a bit. Charisma is the least useful of the skills, but it is useful if you intend doing missions, among a few other things. So get that to lvl 4 or 5 in between, but if you think something else would need training, this is the one to put on the backburner for a bit. Not many bother with the advanced skill for charisma, but bear it in mind, nad you can get that up in advanced later on if you decide you need it.

Ok congratulations - you have stuck through the most painful bit of training skills in EvE! Your learning skills are complete. From now on, anything you decide to train will go at the fastest time possible for your char. You could even buy implants and improve it further. But the hard bit is done. Now you can train any skill you want to, and be safe in thw knowledge it will go as fast as possible. The differences will become obvious to you especially the harder skills, as you can easily wipe days off the train time compared to not doing the above. As long as you keep your clone up to date (very important) you will NEVER lose any of these skills. Once they are done, they are done. So get them done as soon as you can.

    Good Luck!
