It's interesting how all the "doom and gloom" negative threads are worded as is they look for justification of their own opinion about the game. "Anyone else feel that way?". "Anyone else getting bored?". And more similar questions.
No further comment about it...
This is anything but a doom and gloom thread, I actually am really enjoying the game, I just think Anet needs to add purpose and depth to the game, especially regarding character development and social activity. It's because I am enjoying it that I don't want this just to turn into a 1-80 was fun now i'm bored type of game.
I would argue that just about everyone here didnt even bother rading the full OP you made. Seemed to go into game defense mode right off the bat.
I hear what your saying...your missing the ability to shine or fail basically. Theres no real way to distinguish a good player from a poor player....therefore your enjoyment in testing yourself against others and then improving in measurable ways is void in the game.
I know a lot of people whos main source of joy in mmorpgs is this process of self improvement and comparision, being able to be "known" for being good eventually, rather thant he typicall "im geared" end goal.
In all honesty they really do need to sell the endgame and soon, not really a level cap increase but some actual endgame mechanics, as well as add some standard issue mehcanics that are curiously void...i really dont understand how any themepark can forget duels...its a staple...hell even SWTOR had a semi decent medal award system in pvp and you could see which players the other team noticed as doing well via who had the most medals.
From what im hearing from people who are not GW2 fanataics but are playing is that the game seems to be lacking a lot of "stuff" in it, and they all suspect that a few "expansions" will make the game whole.
Wow people amaze me everyday. You all complain about GW2 because "YOU DON'T NEED ANYONE YOU CAN SOLO WITH NO ONES HELP TO MAX". Complaining about no community cause of DE's really? I guess in all the MMO's you have played with quest hubs you always chat it up with all the other players grabbing their go kill 10 rats quest right? Every mmo now that has come out since WoW has had some ability to level to max solo. Why? Because the same people crying on here about no community and to easy to solo would be crying because they have to group to get anything done. Guess what if you want more community or want to play with others then do it. Just because the game doesnt make you have to do it doesn't mean you still cant just go and play with others and start talking to others. So sad that a game has to "FORCE YOU" to interact in a game the way you want really? If you want to play with more people or level in duos and groups then go do it. Stop crying about the game not forcing you too and just do it. Do not blame a game because you are not playing with others. That is your choice to solo. They give you options and what you do with those options are your choices not theirs. If you do not interact with others or group with others how is that anets fault or the game of GW2's fault? Here is a novel idea, take some control and responsibility for your own gaming fun and choices and stop blaming everyone else for your inability to have fun and interact with others. Guess what games are more fun with friends. If you don't play with friends guess who you play with? Yoursefl aka SOLO or you take it upon yourself to make friends.
I mean come on seriously, if you have no friends in RL would you say its the governments fault because they dont make you "NEED" friends? No you wouldn't, so how can you sit there and blame a game because you decide to play it solo because they dont make you "NEED" others to play with. Come on people either quit complaining to just complain or just move on to another genre of game or another hobby, because I honestly feel that for most of you, no game developer will ever make a game you will like.
I joined with the people from my GW1 guild so I've np lack of community,
Creating relations involves work and someone need to give the first step.
But a new player in GW2 has probably more opportunities to initiate a relation than most other MMORPGs without being forced into undesirable relations just because it is a requirement to advance.

There wont be duel spam with a simple checkbox at options that prevents all duel request that comes your way.
Worst case. If you enjoyed 1-80 and that was it. To me that is still better then most games in terms of fun-time played. In fact I'm not at all against just that, I'm a dabbler. I'm not necessarily looking for only 1 game to play. I'm looking for good gameS to play. So I'm just saying if one has fun 1 to 80, that's not too bad these days. Borderlands 2, T2 etc..., right?
The most radical aspect of the game design of GW2, and the most risky one, was to design game elements almost purely for the fun of doing them in and of themselves.
That is a radical departure from MMO design heretofore. MMOs have generally featured a lot of content that people did as a means to an end to some degree. Perhaps some kinds of content more or less than others, but in general, many players viewed it as "sucking it up" or "putting in your time" or "working hard for it" in terms of content being a means to an end -- the end being "standing out", "making a name for yourself" and so on. In this way MMOs mimicked, by design, some aspects of real world motivations (work at a job you hate because it pays well, but certain clothes or cars to impress the opposite sex even if you don't care for them in themselves, and so on). Content as a means to an end. Very addictive for humans because it mimics many aspects of human life, in terms of the compromises many make in life to pursue otherwise unenjoyable means due to a desired end.
GW2 tries to break this model in its design by offering no real incentive to play the game other than the fun it offers. The one exception to that is possibly the "gear look" chase for exotic and legendary gear, which plays on human vanity. Otherwise, the content is really rewarding you only nominally beyond the fun you get (or don't get) from actually playing it. Arena made the radical decision of treating MMO gameplay as an end in itself, rather than a means to an end.
This is the main reason, I think, that quite a few seasoned MMO vets are having issues with the design of the game. It's designed more like a SP game -- very much by design -- in that you play purely for enjoyment and not to "work on goals that will be visible to others" or achieve some other *end* beyond the enjoyment of the gameplay. This is dissatisfying for many MMO vets because it doesn't feed the human needs they have like traditional MMOs do by providing content as a means to the end of satisfying those human needs in a virtual context. People find this irritating, because that is a part of what they look to these games to provide.
I am an MMO vet, but I haven't looked to an MMO to provide that in a long time, so GW2 suits me very well in terms of enjoyment of the content as an end in itself and not as a means to the end of being well geared or well regarded or highly ranked or something else. But I also recognize that this is a pretty radical design decision, probably the most radical one taken by Arena in the design of this game, because it refuses to provide much of (again leaving aside the chase for exotics and legendaries) the kind of human need satsifaction that traditional MMO design does -- it simply tries to provide content that is to be enjoyed as an end in itself -- and, as fascinating as it is to say it, this is a very radical point of view in the MMO genre in 2012. Personally I think that says a lot about where the genre and its fans find themselves currently, but that's a topic for another conversation.
I started playing GW2 not too long ago and the game looks a lot better on my computer than I expected, for some reason most of the videos I've seen looked really poor. To my surprise the environments are probably the best i've ever seen, they are very immersive, sounds are great and the scenery is great. Even the combat is better than I expected, coming from TERA it's not that good but it's certainly better than WoW or Rift.
Overall I find the leveling experience and the world of GW2 to be one of the best i've played, but I am already getting the feeling that once I get 80 i'll just be done. I mean I know the point of games is fun, but fun is only fun for so long without purpose.
Playing WvW and BGs I don't feel I have a purpose, the stats that are displayed are very lackluster and make me feel like i'm not really doing much, even if I get first. I would love for them to be more like they are in WoW, on top of my stats displayed being lacklaster, I can't even see anyone elses, this kind of makes WvW and BGs feel pointless. You can't even make a name for your guild because there's only 3 letters shown and no guild emblem displayed. In TERA(yeah it has a lot of faults but community isn't one of them), due to guild tags and personal stats being saved on characters, you know basically everyone who is good, the big names, the good PvPers, the good PvErs, the good guilds, the bad ones, are known across the entire game and discussed in game constantly.
You know you are doing well by winning and the rank you earn. There is also gear that you can only get through WvW.
As far as emblems you are simply ignorant of the fact that guilds, once they get enough prestigue, can purchase customized guild armor with emblems on them.
Futhermore, guilds can lay claim to structures in WvW and up grade them. Evreyone in WvW will know what guild onwns what structure.
I remember asking if there was any way to display more in depth stats and people said "no', so I asked "then how do you know if you did good" and their response was "If you win, you probably did good". That actually made me stop PvPing for the night because I felt like whatever I was doing, was meaningless.
You need to see numbers to know you are doing well? Stop running with the zerg and get into a good guild that actually plays WvW like a high stakes game of risk
GW2 you can't even inspect people to see anything about them and you can't duel, I don't know if it's just me, but i'm used to inspecting people all the time and coming from TERA, dueling is all I did to test strategy and to compare myself to other players.
Duling would be nice. Inspecting people meh is meh. There isn't tiered raid armor that makes you insanely powerful in this game. Once you hit 80, a full set of crafted gear will have equal stats to a set of gear that a person spent hours grninding for in a dungeon. The difference would be looks (and its a BIG difference)
I think what I'm getting at is I don't feel a sense of community in GW2, while everything is great, I don't feel that sense of community or purpose. I feel I am just one of 200,000 other asura's and nobody will really be able to distinguish me from the other 199,999. Nobody can inspect me, nobody can see any of my personal stats, I can't get to know people through PvP(dueling, OWPvP), or even PvE, because I don't need anyone to PvE with, I can just PvE on my own and it's not boring and I don't require a group. I feel I am just one of many asura walking around in the same outfit a few thousand other asura are walking around in doing the same thing they are all doing, my guild tag won't be memorable because it's just three letters with no image and I won't be memorable because theres no way to make yourself memorable or stand out in this game.
You don't know about legendary items do you? ANET also plans to release tools for player to host their own PvP tournaments. Futhermore, its likely that ANET will host their own global tournaments like they did for GW1 once the system is released. Look up GW1 global tournament, you'll be surprised how everyone knew the guild with 3 letters (WAR, EvIL, IQ, etc)
I feel GW2 will just be levels 1-80 and then "woo, I beat the game" shut down and never open again. While it will be a fun trip from 1-80, it won't be an MMO to me at this point.
ANET is kinda betting on people doing this. Many people did that with each GW expansion that came out; however, the ones that didn't were the ones who liked looking unquie, playing alts, and getting RL glory in PvP
Anyone else feel the same way or have suggestions on how to feel like anything has a purpose? Am I missing something?
See orange. Hope that answered your questions. If you still feel that way about the game after knowing of this stuff then I hope you have fun while you play

Currently playing:Nothing
Will play: Darkfall: Unholy Wars
Past games:
Guild Wars 2 - Xpiher Duminous
Xpiher's GW2
GW 1 - Xpiher Duminous
Darkfall - Xpiher Duminous (NA) retired
AoC - Xpiher (Tyranny) retired
Warhammer - Xpiher
Lets see,
WoW end-game:
-Raids
-Dungeons
-Battlegrounds
-The questhub Island
-Farming gear that makes you stronger, against enemies that outscales your new strong gear. Big chance items get more ugly during each tier.
- Daily Quests in 85 zones.
GW2 endgame:
- Raids (Dynamic Events)
- Dungeons
-Battlegrounds (sPvP)
-World vs World.
- You can progress in all zones, up to, and even after 80 wher you still gain fictional levels.
- Game is about skills so you just unlock cooler looking armor.
I'd say GW2 has good endgame content.
