Guild Wars2 accounts stolen

AghodulSAghodulS Member Posts: 11

Looks like ArenaNet dsnt give a "s--t" to the community, just a few days after the game been out like 11k or more accounts were stolen (sadly, both mine and my wife´s account were stolen the same way), all the hackers had to do was access theyre database and change the account e-mail, and pay attention, without any restriction, ArenaNet didnt even send a e-mail confirmation to change the account e-mail adress, but wait, if you think thats the worse i need to tell you ... no its not ... since they know the flaw was on theyre "system", and they cant really solve it, they sending (in both my accounts) a "support" answer telling us that "they sorry, but they cant do anything about the account problem", and its disgusting but they did send on the same e-mail a "how-to" buy and create a new account.

All i can say is: We deserve more respect.

Ps.: sorry for the bad english ... english isnt my main language and i was in a hurry to go work.

GW2 is buy to play.  If your account is stolen and you have to buy a new one to keep playing, Arenanet profits.

Did you have the same password for the game as your email? In that case you are in even bigger problems since your mail is hacked as well.

There are plenty of hackers that have huge lists of peoples email adresses and password on sites on the net, so whenever someone always use the same they are begging for it, I am not saying that you do however, just trying to be helpful and warning you.

In most cases they actually sent both a note to allow access from a new IP and a note about the account being changed, but the hackers deleted them from the mail account to give them some extra time and to not make you realize they also have your mail password which might give them profit later.

Use a specific mailadress for NC soft games and never use the same password for more than one thing.

ANET will restore your account if you contact their or NC softs service though. And no, you cant sue them. And yes, the policy to use the mailadress as accountname is bad.

The main thing that gets peoples accounts 'hacked' is the unsafety of databases on fansites. Think of any forum, any fansite, guild sites and probably even sites like mmorpg.com, unless they've got a security expert.

When registering to sites like these, it's best to use a bogus emailaddress and/or a random or generic password (on sites that you could go without). Things not to do are updating passwords to keep them in line with your other sites, use the same password at sites worth something (email, bank, games you invested money in) and probably use another emailaddress on those.

Also never forget how stupid people are and believe that a post-it with 20 passwords on your monitor isn't safer than using the same password everywhere. I'd rather have someone from my house logging in than a chinese RMT guy or botter ;)

Once you're sure you've taken all the necessary precautions you can start assuming there might be a database leak on Arenanets site. And if they have been keeping it a secret (even after they've solved it) they can indeed be sued, if that's your thing.

I am not Anet fanboy but this is just nonsense. They are smart enough to realize that this kind of mentality would hurt them more in the long run - this game has a cash shop.

Imho they are just not sure he was hacked because of their mistake.

I'm sorry, which part was nonsense?  The part where GW2 is buy to play?  Or the part where buying an account gives money to Arenanet?

Anet actually said if anyone has their account stolen then they should email the support site with "hacked account stolen" in the subject line and they would prioritize these.

They also said that they believed someone had got hold of a list of gamer emails and was testing each one by trying to reset the password, so they had removed this ability from the website.

They certainly did not say, in anyway whatsoever, that if your account is hacked you have to buy a new copy of the game.

Just to clarify, i am 110% sure (yeah, 110%) that the problem wasnt my password, i do work with computer system development for desktop and internet, i have my own company, small but still. My password were 16 chars long, including symbols, numbers, lowercase and capital, not using any personal date, name or common word.

The e-mail adress of that account was unique, made just for that game, like i did for my WoW account, that means i never ever used it for any other purpose other then create the game account, and the e-mail have the two step verification that i need to enter a number given to my phone, to be able to log in.

My dear friend, yes i know all that, i did made my ticket with that subject, and they did answer like i said on the main post, i could post here the original e-mail from ArenaNet but i dont see how that would help.

So ... yes, i lost my account, i did open a ticket for "stolen account", i did got the answer from them saying "sorry ... blah blah blah" and a "how-to create/buy a new game account" on the same answer.

If you got your account stolen like me and my wife and they gave it back to you, im happy for you, if not ... plz, dont assume that you know what is happening, plz.

That is odd sunce there are several people here before you who got hacked and you are the first one I heard that they didnt restore it for.

Check on earlier threads about it... If ANET seems to be a problem, then contact NC soft instead, someone should be able to restore your account.

having been on the receiving end of one of these hackers i can tell you that

1)be patient..you will get the accounts back..took them 6 days to get to me..dont put more than 1 ticket for each account in otherwise you go to the back of the queue again.

    2) part of the blame is your own and part Anet's..you should have used a complete new e-mail adress for your account and another new one for your wife.Anet should have had an authenticator and security question in place on release.

3)when you get your account back change both e-mails and both passwords or you risk having it done again

good luck and i really hope you get your accounts back soon..i know being patient is a hard but be patient m8.

Except, as stated by him in this very thread, he did use a complete new and seperate email address for the account.

I think he is referring to the fact that NCSoft sold millions of games, and to think that they would sit down and agree that if a few people had to buy the game again it would be a huge profit. That is ludicrous.

You're right, that is ludicrous.  It is also not what I said.  I didn't say the profit would be huge.  I also didn't say that they would even discuss such a thing.  What I did say is that the game has a cost, and to get another account costs again.

I also didn't say "If your account is stolen you have to buy a new one to keep playing"

Just to play "fun facts' potential for making those 11k buy again would be $660,000
