If you feel you are in the right and they are in the wrong..Take them to court...
Often times by playing you agree to not be able to do this. License agreements and all.
Luckily, in civilised countries at least, consumer protection laws take precedence over any and all EULAs, TOS agreements etc.
Furthermore, these "I agree" documents aren't in anyway legally binding, in so far that they can only cover stuff in existing laws, consumer or otherwise.
I offer this information to avoid the spreading of misinformation in the form of your reply to his post.
Originally posted by kadepsysonGW2 is buy to play. If your account is stolen and you have to buy a new one to keep playing, Arenanet profits.
I am not Anet fanboy but this is just nonsense. They are smart enough to realize that this kind of mentality would hurt them more in the long run - this game has a cash shop.Imho they are just not sure he was hacked because of their mistake.
I'm sorry, which part was nonsense? The part where GW2 is buy to play? Or the part where buying an account gives money to Arenanet?
I think he is referring to the fact that NCSoft sold millions of games, and to think that they would sit down and agree that if a few people had to buy the game again it would be a huge profit. That is ludicrous.
Just to play "fun facts' potential for making those 11k buy again would be $660,000
That wouldn't even be enough to justify court and legal fees once the truth came out if it were even a real fact.
Plus, why would they stop selling copies (which you know they did for a short time) just to have hacked folks purchase the game again? It makes no sense.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Slinging accusations about people with zero knowledge about how they handle their accounts is pretty weak and uncalled for.
I had my account hacked and never signed up for any GW2 fansites. I actually figured out that I had accidentally used a password that I had used about 2-3 years ago on this very site. An administrator from the site actually confirmed that they had one of their user DB's hacked a few years back.
Regarding ANet's account security. In this day and age, I believe that some sort of coin lock or muti-factor authentication should be incorporated with every MMO. It's a shame that ANet created such a great game but couldn't add such simple security features for their customers.
Also, for those who are unfortunate enough to have their accounts hacked, if ANet does restore it, you will be left with no money or items. I got my account back last night and can't even afford a teleport on my 42 Engineer.
Well ... to be fair, i dont think the instruction on the ticket answer explaining "how-to create a new account game" had that purpose, i mean, just make profit with new units sell ... i really dont believe that, that is just a BOT answer for sure, with a sadly coincidence.
I do think that the only reason the number of stolen accounts wasnt bigger than 11k is that they probally disabled the point on theyre system that had the flaw, AKA the changing account e-mail adress, before the "hackers" steal more accounts, even using a "script", it does need some time to change the data on theyre system and validate it, what dsnt mean on any aspec that the other users didnt got theyre account compromissed, just means the hackers could not finish theyre work.
So ... yeah, i did open a new ticket, with the same subject, hoping they review that stupid first answer, and yes i do hope that they rework the security system, including some new keys, to avoid that kind of attack. ArenaNet its not Blizzard, nothing to do with and plz dont start flamming, but i think they should learn with what Blizz did ... i mean, e-mail confirmation for everything, token system for login (authenticators), and a better support system, that would be the start.

So you admit that arenanet failed to protect customers because they didn't have that email authentication system until after launch and issues arose.
Seriously dude ... i know i should not post an answer to you (#1 rule: dont feed trolls), but still ... follow the posts i made, you will get some info of what is happening, and then you will understand what is going on ... dont need to read all pages, the info you need to know is on the on first two pages, and not a lot of posts or wall of text, just a few posts explaining the facts.

i agree that ANET would benefit by having something similar to Blizzards system
something ANET did (to their credit) that blizzard did not do
ANET announced how many support tickets they were getting for hacked accounts
when Diablo3 was assailed by many hacked accounts during its first 3 weeks of launch

First - there have been quite a few Fan forum sites that have been hacked, GWonline was the biggest one that was recently hacked. Second - A.Net support, although overwhelmed, have been working through tickets as quickly as possible. Third - Place a post on the official forum here (look in this area) - https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/support/account .
I am sorry you got your account hacked. BUT, to blame A.Net for the problem when it is a 2-edged problem is very myopic. You said you work in computer security, well, you need to relook at it all. I am not trying to say that A.Net shouldn't have better security but you SHOULD know better also. As an example, my wife works in databases and types and does things extremely fast on the PC. One time, she got a virus and couldn't figure out where it came from and as it turned out she clicked on a link in an email without thinking and downloaded it. I am not saying you did that but it can happen. Also, does anyone else use that computer? Look at it all.
Again - sorry for your issue and hope it gets resolved.
Originally posted by AghodulS we did realize that, i forgot to mention on the main post that im a former WoW players, and on 7 years of WoW i never had any kind of problem on my two accounts, ever ... its just disgusting that lack of respect from ArenaNet.
and that's where the problem starts. i'll just throw out some guesses now....
using the same email and pw for your games?
didnt read when they said "change your PWs, hackers have a list of those old use accs!"?
as sheldon ones said: "ITS NOT HACKING... when you use the same pw for all your accounts."
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"

And here's my guess. You're the one who didn't read, this thread. Go do it, then come back when you realize he had one email only for GW2.

Well ... valid post, even tho i must say im pretty sure im clear on that problem, the PC i play GW2 is a brand new Alienware laptop that i got from my wife for my birthday on Aug 28th (turned 35, got the laptop and GW2 as a gift since im passionated with online games) ... hmmm ... no one ever did touch it since them, and yes i have my own company and i do develop for desktop and internet, we have a very rigid security here (not saying it is flawless, but ...), that been said im pretty sure the problem was on ANet system, not saying they are bad, but sadly the flaw they had gave the hackers a clear window to act ... but again, it could be worse, could be more ppl, and ANET was able to stop it at 11k what is good ... small loss (for them).
Just to make a clear point, the e-mail used to create the game is hosted by my company on our DataCenter, and before i say anything the first thing i did, with my security team and some IT friends, was check if i had any malware or flaw or even suspect access, and everything was clear. Both accounts were using diferent e-mail adress, with strong password, and my wife PC its not new, so i went to check it too with my crew and it was clear too (had to be sure).
Meh ... bad luck of me i guess, i mean, i was on the first batch of theyre script ... i still think that it could be worse and that ANet did a good move and did kill the script before it compromise more than that 11k accounts.

So far playing gw2 for 3 days only and nobody so far have stolen my account. :-)
But in any other way I agree with you. And if this happen (and my computer is 100% clean and my password is very complicated) will be only THEIR fault. In this case nothing would make me buy another copy. Game is good for being F2P, but not so good to buy another copy.
I had same password, as I did on Guru(because I cant remember very good, got problems in that area.) however there a few things I can remember and this was one of them.
Well Herd Guru was hack, but hope it would not effect me.
Unlucky account was hack, but lucky took 2 days and it was fix.

I can already add to my own post my new experience. No, nothing got hacked. :-) It is very positive experience.
They might not have authenticators or alike ... but when GW2 game client discovered that I'm logging in from different IP, I got message that confirmation email have been sent to me and only after confirming it I will be able to login! And indeed, after confirming my new ip I could log in without problems. They have this original layer for security. Same feature have also Rift and I think every game should have this.
Of course, if email got compromised too or entire computer, is fully computer user responsability.
And now that come to my mind ... in all this years I never had any problem with my wow account. But once, when fake emails were not so common, I eventually clicked on that damn email saying my account got hacked and I should click on link .... I realized instantly my mistake, changed immediately my wow password manually going to original site and sent them message. But there are still many (but really many) people out there that by mistake or strange urge to click, they click at least one click to much. Or can happen email get compromised, many use same passwords for many thing, on email there is evidence i.e. for some game account ... and voila, you got hacked. For this reason I'm now for some time using all different passwords.
Happened also in past my hotmail account got hacked, not sure how, but password was really very dummy from security perspective. Still i doubt they got it from first try. Was my commonly used password for trials, but not one of the most used list at all.
And my trial wow account got hacked. Again, not sure however how this happened, Blizzard or my problem. I know only that email linked to wow trial was not hacked, but is true I never bothered to much with trial account and selected easy password. Still ... how can client allow probably dozen and dozen of .... retries to login? And from different ip. Is them to blame or me? And in this case, 100% my computer was clean. And what is worst tragedy, I was completely unable to retrieve my account. They have some questions, links, ... all terribly dumb setup ... I guess I would be rushed to emergency unit to hospital if this happened to my regular account with 10 maxed out alts and miriad of others. :-) Just in case I have added this time battlenet authenticator. And did this also on same day to my Rift and Swtor account.
For things one really care there is actually no such thing as "overkill" in security. :-)
NEVER respond to ANY email you get directly using that email. If you get any email for any reason reguarding a game, then go to the game fiorst to see if you actually got your account stolen or banned. If so then go directly to the sites support, simply put do not click any link inside an email.
I think it might have been helpful if all those that had account problems share WHERE they bought their games from.
It is so funny to look way back to the release of DOOM.i am talking mid 90's and they already were being over cautious of theft.it was the black case version of the game where we had to actually phone in our game ID/code to be able to play the game.People were angry over having to follow such protocol but it seems ID software were onto something long before everyone else.
What disturbs me is that GW2 allows email authentication to be disabled,i simply cannot see how that helps security in any way, unless i miss something there?
