On top of that, they had digital sales shut off for a week with a lot of stores sold out.

As harsh a critic as I am of this game I agree with this, let's give it another month or two to see if the shut down caused a little bump in the road.

However since I have to keep my reputation as a GW2 hater intact, while 2 million and counting is an impressive number, I'm still betting (much to my never ending disgust) that MoP's sales numbers are going to roll over these like the Jun Horde.

Man o man! Tardcore did you have sex? You seem to be slipping a bit.  lol

I also agree that MoP will outsell GW2. It is just common sense that many folks will want to continue the WoW adventure.  I will be buying a copy myself!

I too wouldn't be surprised if MoP outsells GW2 at launch, and top XFire at launch for 2 weeks. World of Warcraft and Blizzard are names you simply can't trifle with. Only they can bring about their own demise at this point.

According to Anet they want to beat WOW in sales and be number one. I think they know for that they have to go for mass appeal hence mainstream.

I don't think GW2 will come close to MoP in sales.  But I'd sure love it if they did.

Since GW2 includes prepurchase numbers from months prior to release in this "two week" period (lol), I wonder if we include prepurchases for MoP if the WoW expansion has ALREADY outsold GW2 before it even is released :)

I see you repeatedly bring this up, but I'm wondering if things would be any different if GW2 decided to open prepurchase 2 weeks before release? It is to my understanding that people who prepurchased early on are guaranteed to have bought the game anyway. They are the same ones who would have set aside the money for GW2 had prepurchase been not yet available. The people who prepurchased before the BWEs and the release date announcement would also have prepurchased regardless of when they were allowed to do so.

You are right in thinking a pre-purchase is a sale.  However, it isn't possible for us to tell if everyone who pre purchased, would have instead purchased normally if pre purchase wasn't available, within two weeks of release.

Which is why I brought up the comparison.  We'll see some numbers from blizzard I'm sure, and comparing the two weeks after for them, to the two weeks after to gw2, will spark some discussion I'm sure.

I thought people were able to cancel their pre-purchase? I've read their testimonials in this very forum. Unless they're lying of course.

Actually some people did cancel their pre-purchases and got a full refund, but there wasn't an automated method to do that, you had to contact support. Actually someone did ask how to cancel it and get a refund on the oficial forums, and an anet representative (forgot which one) answered exactly that.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

omg, people are acting like children with this "la la la wow sold more la la la"...

    LOL dudes, really?

Wow is the Justin Bieber of MMOS, pure markting . Hell remember a propaganda where Tom Cruise talk about WOW. Even Ozzy talk about WOW.

Funny, no one talk about quality, just about numbers. Are you happy with wow sales? Go play WOW then, who cares? We have a solid community.

The only think i know. GW2 is way better than WOW "FOR ME". I don't care about people playing WOW, i don't care people listen Justin Bieber. Not for me.

2 millions is a success. Point.

    Nice job anet.

Ok good.  So I still wonder, if MoP has already outsold GW2.

i would be surprised if anyone believes MOP will sell less than 2million

MOP will easily outsell GW2 for launch sales

what i believe makes GW2 different than past recent mmos, is it will continue to sell well

for those that dont remember - it took RIFT 3 months to sell 1 million units

Let us see. Someone posts sales numbers of SWTOR, in his opinion launch number / sales mean nothing. And when GW2 sales numbers are posted, a lot of so called haters are of same stance that GW2 sales of 2 million means nothing. What else do you think people have been saying?

Red: Something I didn't say.  Sales always mean profit.

Green: Something people in this thread actually did say.

They're not the same stance at all.  What else you got?  Are you going to dig up more posts of mine today? lol

Actually, I don't care.  I'm blocking you for daring to call me out on something and then not being able to make it stick.  You'd be a terrible lawyer.  Have fun being petty to other people.  I'd rather debate about games, not what I supposedly did and didn't say a year ago.

While i agree with TC that MoP will most likley make these numbers seem tame, it is still one of the best selling games to be released and the B2P model will give it a solid staying power that if they can get a decent cash shop in will make them ugly amounts of money.

They also need hats... especially if you find said hats on random in a box that cost 1$... =P Ok maybe not hats.. but some other random stuff.

This have been a good conversation

Gee Creslin. How were you positively spinning SWTORs numbers and reviews after it's release?

Keep consistent man. You flailed on SWTOR relentlessly and discounted it's early successes and now you cannot abide anyone doing the same to your idol?

Let's start keeping close tabs on those crore graphs after MoP launches.

It will be funny if WoW goes F2P in a year or two because of decling sub numbers and a better game offering more content, and more then likely more frequent content updates (Not hard considering WoW now does 3 content updates over 2 years) then it without a sub. This won't be the last time we hear about record breaking sales either.

You can't really base the active number of players on anything here, really. The main source of income outside of the box they are getting is from the gem store, which I have no doubt they are rolling in money from atm. Hell, I have spent way more then I should have on it already myself! I know of several other people in the same boat. Fact is that if you go into GW1, even now, there is still plenty of people playing it. A game that is Buy 2 Play has far more appeal and lasting power then an MMO with a sub. Hell, look at Diablo 2...sure, its not an MMO but it still has an identical model nearly to GW1 and it still has plenty of people playing it.

I personally think there is a hard ceiling to this game, Where everyone who wanted to play it, did.

Except that is true with every game.

For instance, "WoW has sold x amount of units". Everyone could stop subbing and they will still have sold "x amount of units'.

All these numbers show, like every game that is purchased, is intiial interest. And this shows initial interest is high.

What must be compared going forward are concurrent players.

    Gratz Anet.

No they will never reach wow numbers.

    WoW sell more then guildwars.

Justin Beiber sell more then Mastodon.

    Thats how the world works.

Its intersting to see how you feel bad and tell people to have shame for downplaying GW2 sales number while you were doing the same so not long ago. Other shoe dropped and all that.

You did say that pre orders of SWTOR and launch numbers mean nothing, i don't know why feel so offended if people are saying now that launch number of GW2 means nothing?

You skewed what he said to fit into your own words.  Just give it up, you're not proving anything here except that you won't let something said a year ago go.  Jeez talk about a grudge.

Talking about grudges are you ready to let go of WOW yet? you should be the last person to give me advice on grudges.

I have nothing against WoW.  Where's this grudge I have against it?

Thank you for debunking the hype myth! (and sorry to state the obvious).

Not anywhere near really "popular" and "hyped" games such as the Sims franchise but BIG gratz Anet: Twice the number of Guild Wars at release and you made a wonderful game (again...)

We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!

Swtor sakes all came in one lump as a Christmas time cash grab (when there was no one around to do a proper review)

Gw2 is releasing in waves at a time when it has competition - tsw, tera, mop

Congrats ANet. Always nice to see hard work rewarded. As for who is and is not playing well I can tell you that I have friends playing who have NEVER considered an MMO. In fact they used to make fun of me playing WoW. :) they are having a great time enjoying a new gaming experience. So yes some traditional MMO players will fall away as time passes, but there will be a lot of players playing that are jaded to an online world, no matter how cool it is. BTW can we stoP with comparisons to WoW. WoW is a great game and I hope it lasts for another 8 years. I just won't be playing it.

The only way GW2 could have had as much hype as a WoW expac was if there were GW2 ads in WoW...
