Recommend me an MMORPG

First off, I have a few guidelines. This will be my first MMO, so I'm a new to the whole idea, but I've been doing some research about them and found a few that look interesting to me. I'm looking for something relatively cheap to download and or subscribe to. This way I can see if I even like the genre without wasting too much money. I'm located in the US.

I will be playing it on a laptop with an external mouse. The laptops specs are Athlon 64 3000+, 512 mb RAM, Geforce 4 4400 Go 64mb, Windows XP. So nothing too graphically intensive.

Lastly, No World of Warcraft. All of my friends play it, and I would just feel like another lamb to the slaughter if I played WOW.

PC RPGs that I have played in the past and liked were: Diablo 1 & 2, Sacred, Divine Divinity, and Beyond Divinity.

Here are the games I've been looking into. Any insight that you could give me into any of them, or ones that you would recommend would be greatly appreciated.

Conquer Online: This looks like a good starting point to me. It's free and has no subscription fee. I've read some good reviews about it. It seems kinda like Diablo 2 and I like what I have seen of the class system.

The Legend of Mir 3: It seems kinda like Divine Divinity from what I have read about it. I also hear it's really popular in other countries.

Ragnarok Online: I really like the character sprites and love the idea of having so many character classes. It's quite popular as well.

Maple Story: This looks like it breaks the mold for MMOs, with it's side scrolling gameplay. Looks very fun, and have heard lots of good reviews about it.

Rose Online: I think the character design for this one looks fantastic. It's in Beta now. It does look a little graphic intensive though.

Finally: Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst: I loved all of the Phantasy Star games before the online version, but never got into it due to the fact that I didn't want to game online with my Xbox. Now that it's been released for PC, I've been thinking about it. It has a relatively low subscription fee too.

Well, there are my choices that I have narrowed it down to. Thank you, anyone who has taken the time to read my entire post and for any advice that you can fill me in on.

Judging from the games you mention and like, you should check out Guild Wars.. thats Diablo with better graphics.

And its one of the cheapest MMO's out there, since therea are no monthly fees.

Just go with the flow, try things out. It also depends on who you are as a player. I have played MMO's ever since MUD's were around, but never realy kept playing one for more than a few months.. sometimes coming back though.. For me, its the crisp of noobness that is the most fun.. Then if the game is strong and has depth, it will keep me around for a few more months.. Community is what will keep you the longest, to any game.

    Have fun.

actually, he shouldn't check out Guild Wars at all! besides that its a very bad game, its not an mmo.
well, i would suggest World of Warcraft, as it is THE mmorpg to start in, but since you said you didn't want to play WoW (tough your reason is a little..odd) hmm. well, i would definitly give Ragnarok Online a shot. i played it for over a year and i liked it alot. if your willing to pay for a box, i would recommend Everquest 2 or City of Heroes (if you like comic books).

tough the best beginner mmorpg would still be WoW, but hey, your choice ;)

Your best bet is to NOT ask other people. Everyone else has different opinions so it will get you confused. Even if the majority of the people like a certain game, it may not be a fun game to YOU. I haven't tried Guild Wars but I want to, I think it would be a good game to play because there are no subscription fees and that can save you lots of money if you add it all up. Whatever you do, don't get Dark Age of Camelot, it's really bad, I got it because it had decent reviews but its just boring.

If you don't want to get Guild Wars, I personally think World of Warcraft would be a good choice even though you said you didn't want it. Online games are lots more fun when friends or people you know play. If you REALLY TRULY DONT want world of warcraft, City of Heroes is really fun too.

You always lose money with online games, keep that in mind. The average subscription fee for most online games is $15 dollars every month + the retail price! But honestly, I think you should do the following:

RUN AWAY FROM YOUR COMPUTER IMMEDIATELY! IT IS PURE EVIL! IT IS TEMPTING YOU TO BUY ADDICTIVE BORING NERDY GAMES THAT RUN VERY SLOW AND COST LOTS OF MONEY EACH MONTH! ONLINE GAMES ARE ADDICTING, AND FOR THE MOST PART NOT FUN. I HATE ONLINE GAMES AND I STILL PLAY THEM AND CAN'T STOP. THEY CAN BE FUN SOMETIMES, BUT THEY REALLY AREN'T WORTH THE MONEY.

    Alright.

Can't really recommend conquer online. Boring skill system. Bad graphics. You'll get pked all the time for no reason.

Try out The legend of mir 3. It's also free, so it wouldn't hurt. I've played it, and it might be a little dull in the beginning, but it accelerates pretty quick. Also it's one of the best communities I've seen yet!

Don't listen to gameloading, the WoW fanboi.

As i recall, you played and liked diablo 1 and 2. So.. i therefore think your best bet would be guildwars which has very good graphics for the requirements(im pretty sure your comp would run it smoothly) and an addictive, unique, and very fun play style. Guildwars is a great upgrade from diablo 2, in my eyes.

Theres my 2 cents. Best of luck!

It's funny that you are all mentioning Guild Wars, because right now I have two groups of friends, one group is playing WOW, and other group is playing Guild Wars. So I've been hearing a lot about Guild Wars too. Guild Wars would be more my sytle I think. One of the reasons that I chose the games I mentioned was to strike a middle ground, and not alientate any of my friends.

Thanks for the comments and recommendations, I appreciate you guys helping me out. Especially the poter that told me to turn off my computer and run away! I know what you are talking about, all of my friends are extremely addicted. I'd still like to get some more opinions on the games I have listed though.

Conquer Online: Didn't play it, but judging by other people, I don't think it would be the game for you.

The Legend of Mir 3: If you don't care about graphics, then you should be comfortable with this game. Pretty nice system, you might enjoy this.

Ragnarok Online: Pretty solid game. Again, if you don't mind the less than stellar graphics, gameplay is pretty solid here. WoE (guild versus guild combat) becomes really addicting and fun to play, and leveling can go pretty fast if you know the places to play. I think you would enjoy this one.

Maple Story: The game looks different, is different, but it is very grindy. If you don't mind spending a lot of time leveling, then you could consider this one. I got bored of it after awhile because of all the grinding I had to do.

Rose Online: For your graphics card, you will be fine, but if you end up in a place with like 50 people in an area, your fps will drop to like 2 :P. So if you can avoid those places (or do what I did, and look down), you should be fine. Solid game as well, leveling wasn't too bad, but it wasn't fast either. The cart idea is cool :). Also the guild maps are pretty good from what I've heard. Give it a shot, it's in open beta.

Finally: Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst: didn't play much of it to warrant an opinion.

Overall, I'd say ROSE and RO seem like a good choice for you, Guild Wars as well if you wish to get that. ROSE is open beta, so you can give that a try for free. RO you will be able to get a free trial without a credit card, so that's always available as well.

how about you stop calling me names? you don't even know me.

i recommend WoW because it is a great mmorpg to Begin with.

the OP clearly asked for an MMO, and Guild Wars isn't an mmo.

  • zeboathzeboath Member Posts: 396

    So?

If he liked Diablo 2, Guild Wars would definitely be something for him.

I don't get why people want to place a genre on every single game. Instead of saying: Not an MMO = bad game. It's about just as stupid as saying CS sucks because it's not an RTS. How about saying: I don't like instancing therefore I do not like this game.

If I were to be extremely ridiculous, I'd say WoW doesn't suffice he needs to. He asked for a MMORPG. WoW is not a game. It's work.

City of Heroes if you are all about solo and group PvE fighting system.

EQ2 if you are community driven.

EQ if you think WoW was an easy tutorial and want harder stuff.

SoR if you miss Morrowind and Rolemaster in a very harsh and crude, tradeskilling oriented, world.

Horizons if you want to play a Dragon or are a tradeskiller (hard to say tradeskill wise if SoR or Horizons is better, I dislike tradeskilling...and I dislike both as a result).

DAoC if you are PvP driven.

I haven't really played any of the games you listed, but a few things come to mind to help you as you look.

If you haven't tried any MMOs out, you could give the free online ones a test during their trial or beta periods. So I guess that would be Ragnarok, Rose Online, and Legend of Mir. I would steer you away from Maple Story, unless you're the type of person who enjoys whacking cute creatures all day and saving up money to buy things that make your character look a little different from everyone else.

I'd recommend EQ2, I had a good deal of fun playing it while I did (MMOs have short lives with me, I just get bored of leveling up). You can even find some people that really enjoy roleplaying, if you're into that sort of thing, albiet even on the Antonia Bayle, the RP server, there weren't that many people that did it. I loved the crafting system in the game, once I figured it out, and made a great deal of cold hard gold for my sorcerer when she become a scribe, or scholar or whatever.

The people I met in FFXI were good friends, but that game ultimately felt like a gargantuan waste of time. The crafting system was also a giant waste of time and money. Even though I played it longer than any other MMO I've played, it just in the long run wasn't that fun.

My friends are split on the WoW issue. A few ended up playing by themselves for the most part and leveled to 60 in a month and then got very bored with the game. A know some people that all play together and enjoy the game very much, so it might not be bad if you've got some friends already playing it. I have heard the PvP raids are kind of silly and pointless though.

Guild Wars, which I played the beta on, was good plain fun. I'm actually considering buying it now (I would've gotten it earlier this year, but I won EQ2 on this site and ended up playing that for 4 months), because I like that there's no monthly fee, and I think I'd like to actually do some of the PvP or GuildvGuild fighting in the game. One of the beta weekends had a taste of that, and I beat the begeezees out of the people I fought, though they were pretty lame and ran away. It is, as others before me have stated, a lot like Diablo, only a heck of a lot prettier. It will also run nicely on your machine.

I know I've rambled on here a lot, and I apologize for that. To reiterate my first point though, if you've never played an MMO before, give one of the freebees a try. I played Priston Tale before I played anything, and it got me into playing with people and lead me to FFXI.

But I also have to agree with the person who said to get rid of the computer and not play games. MMOs are insanely addictive. And even though I've quit them for the most part, I still jones to go back and play EQ2 or start playing FFXI again. It's tough to really ever stop playing them. So my final advice would be to save yourself the trouble, stick with your single-player RPGs that are more storybased and have an ending. But if you decide against that advice, then go ahead and take the other stuff I said.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've decided to try Conquer Online and Legend of Mir 3. I've downloaded Conquer, but have yet to download Legend of Mir 3. Man I hope i don't like these, otherwise, I've got a long road ahead of me. image

If you find yourself not taking to the traditional grind, try out eve online. you either love it or hate it, so it can be worth the 14 day trial.
