Played Engineer up to 33 and finally took a break from it. I'm trying a flamethrower / rifle build, but I just get destroyed when vs. multiple mobs, especially if one of them is ranged. The class just doesn't have very good damage output or survivability unless you use grenades or the elixir gun, and turret cooldowns are just too long to be worth using in most situations. Not to mention that most of the time they are immediately attacked and destroyed pretty much as soon as they're set up.
I want to love my little Asura engineer, but I just can't seem to make it work. If I'm having trouble in the level 15-25 zones at 33, well...
My warrior is 17, and is just a blast to play. Good damage, good survivability, cool abilities (banners rock). Sword / axe, bow, rifle, and greatsword are all incredibly fun and viable builds. Definitely becoming my favorite class so far.
My Mesmer is 10, and I'm not quite sure how to feel. It's a fun class, great at kiting multiple mobs and spreading around conditions, but really feels weak in the damage department, especially vs. veteran mobs.Survivability takes a significant dive vs. ranged enemies as well, with very few abilities to mitigate that type of damage. Definitely a class to fiddle around with though. Plus it's an excuse to make the most garishly colored clothes imaginable.
Of course all this is irrelevant for theimmediate future, as Borderlands 2 will be out tomorrow, and I definitely forsee myself being buried in its magnificence for quite some time. Then after that, X-Com... but GW2 will be a nice game to play to avoid burnout on those two.
I've played all classes in sPvP and made many multiples of classes.. but have only stuck with a few that I found to be engrossing.
Ranger: One of the best classes in the game IMO, but most people play rangers terribly, using greatsword and longbow, but completely forgetting the strength in shortbow, axe, torch and warhorn. Lots of amazing abilities that increase survival far more then greatsword allows. Lots of additional abilities available due to pet variety. Easy to pick up and play but tough to play well (apparently).
I'm in my early 40s and have been using a shortbow and greatsword. I like the mobility and damage. I like how you can:
soften up at ranged
flash in, drop a couple skills, lay traps, and do some okay AoE
then flip back and be instantly back out at range - heal, and then lay down dots
Another ranger guildie of mine says he likes sword + horn and shortbow so I'm going to grab a sword and try that to see how it compares.
Theres a lot of ways you can spec a ranger.. a lot of people like Longbow/Greatsword due to the burst damage, and I use that sometimes.. but my favorite spec right now is Shortbow, Axe/Torch. If you are a condition damage fan, you can't do much better then that.. and I burn groups down very quickly.. and with the extra dodge on the shortbow I stay alive a very long time.
Sometimes I swap torch for warhorn and use longbow if I want something that focuses on strong sustained burst while staying ranged, and debuffs along with the boons of warhorn can put out some really good damage. I don't think theres necessarily bad ways to spec a ranger if its played well.

hmm been running shortbow and sword/dagger fro my condition build right now.. ill give axe/torch a try as well see how that plays out... really love GS on ranger though more so than on the warrior

GS for ranger is SO much better than on warrior, so true. Definitely try Axe/Torch... SO... GOOD... spreads conditions like wildfire.
Definitely interesting to see what other people have to say on this subject. I can't comment on all of the classes, though from what I have played, ranger and guardian feel pretty easy, and still fun. Mesmer is a bit more difficult than either of those, but definitely shows the potential for greatness/beastmode.

"Here's my list for standard PVE from my experience"
I'll add my own experience and opinion to this. I havent bought that 8th character slot yet, so I havent tried a warrior.
From 1-10 easiest (1) to hardest (10) to play.
Ranger level 20 - Long bow and short bow or sword and torch. All traint points, upgades, and item stats into precision. Love to see almost every auto-attack crit.
(1) PVE Ranger- With the grizzly pet and and just swaping between short bow and long bow, its almost boring.
(3) PvP Ranger- Havent had too much experience with this yet, but as long as I was able to keep range with a ranged pet no problems.
Guardian level 13- Two-handed sword, mace and shield, or scepter and focus. Im thinking toughness build for trait points, and a combanation of power and toughness for item stats and upgrades.
(3) PvE Guardian - For the most part I just charge in two handed sword all the time. If things get tuff I switch to mace and shield.
(5) PvP Guardian - I'll do the 2nd hander sword for the quick close, but so far Ive been a little to squishy. Scepter and torch to play support and to hit at range while staying out of the thick of it. Havent done much PvP tho, so there is still a play style to perfect.
Mesmer level 27 - This actually takes skill to play as you have to switch weapons a lot to be very effective. Decoy and Mirror Image are a must for a least two utility slots. The staff really limits the DPS, but it has the range, and the auto-attack throws out some really great boons (buffs). All trait points, equipment stats, and upgrades into toughness.
Watching cool downs is a must so you can keep up a steady army of illusions. I think the profession mechanic is its weakest point and its almost never worth it for me to lose (gain) the aggro, boons and DPS from popping them.
(4) PvE Mesmer - Staff and dual-wielding swords. With third utility slot slotted with Signet of Illusions. Without making this a big mesmer write-up, I go in with staff pop a clone with Phase Retreat allow it to get aggro, drop Chaos Storm, switch to swords, Illusionary Leap swap places, then switch back and forth between staff and sword popping clones from both skill sets. If I get aggro pop Decoy, and if I lose too many clones pop Mirror Image.
(2) PvP Mesmer - Staff and dual-wielding swords. If they dont see me I go straight in with swords popping Mirror Image and Illusionary Leap. This is where it gets fun, you have to keep clones up as the player will get confused, always pop Decoy if they zero in. Dual swords do damn good DPS and with stacked toughness you can survive most encounters while youre bringing up clones and hacking away. Anything that wears cloth or medium armor (except a well played thief) I will absolutly shread. Guardians and Warriors will rip me a new one if I cant kite, if so I just Decoy and disengage.
I havent found the best third utility slot yet, but Im thinking Portal Entre. That should allow me to control the range of combat at my discression.
*I'll write somemore later or maybe tomorrow, right now Im hungry and need some dinner. Then I want to play some GW2.*

My Guardian reached Level 60 yesterday, all other classes I have on Levels 10-15.
The Guardian is relatively compfortable to solo, but definitely more squishy compared to the warrior. The difficulty comes from the fact that almost all his fency barriers, heals and group buffs are stationary and it is very challenging to play the support role effectively in WvWvW and in the 5 man dungeons with people running caotically around. Additional problem is most dungeon bosses are very melee unfriendly, then all you can do is use the crappy scepter or heal with the staff.
Messmer I like least, in PVE it is nearly impossible to use the clones, shades and whatever in a way it would actually help you.
Elementalist will be my second char to level up, I live the toolkit and yeah I got the feeling that at least for PVE, range is way more flexible and useful than melee.
I find it kind of laughable that anybody is saying any of these classes is hard. Some of them are definitely easier than others, but ive so far played thief to 58, necro to 14, and elem to 11, and none were *hard*, elem i found to be far more fun and easier than thief or necro, but i liked the way thief played so i stuck with it.
"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently."
I've played them all to mid-teens and my Guardian is 23 now. For me it goes:
Easy: Guardian, Necromancer, Ranger
Medium: Warrior, Thief, Elementalist
Hard: Engineer, Mesmer
I haven't PvP'd at all yet in this game so I base it mostly on which play well for me against "veteran" and "champion" mobs. I'll readily admit the Eng and Mez being at the bottom is that I "get them" the least. The middle ones may just be me not finding the right weapon combo/utility skills that suit me.
The first 3 just fit like a glove from the start for me. On my guardian I use sword/focus most of the time soloing and swap into either staff or scepter/shield when working with a crowd of allies. On any of the first 3 it's easy for me to take a vet and couple spares or a half dozen normal mobs at one time. For champions I'm talking about helping a group take them down. I've never gotten far with any of them solo vs champions since I don't kite that well.

how is it laughable? everyone has their own definition of the word "hard". For me certain classes were actually pretty damn hard on several of the class story quests.. also found some of the classes could easily solo some champions while others I had no chance in hell.

The Ranger is the absolute powerhouse of the four I've played. It's the most fun and strongest. The Necro is second and not bad in his own right. The Ranger weapon abilities are so interesting and useful I have a tough time deciding which to use. I end up switching from sword/torch or dagger to longbow to greatsword and axe torch or dagger. The torch is a blast, setting countless enemies on fire with a wicked Condition is very fun.
The Engineer is very limited weapon wise and doesn't have many interesting abilities at this low level (16). I'm sure the Engineer will become more interesting as I level him. The Thief started out pretty strong but hit some kind of wall around lvl 10. I use pistols primarily with him and the damage is laughable especially if I switch from the Ranger to the Thief immediately.
I would say the Engineer is the least enjoyable as he is just too limited with his weapon selection at these low levels.

I've played my mesmer to 80, have my ranger at 40 leveling completely through dungeons, and had an elementalist at 60 prior to launch, as you get into tougher content you see the flaws in each class and more-so the flaws in the player. sPvP is also a good way to test a number of builds...
Some classes are very hard to play at level 80... the survivability just isn't there in level 80 zones, and if you do dungeons early on its a good learning experience. The explorables can really teach you a thing or two about how well you play your class, and it also helps to see how others play theirs in a closed environment with a lot of mobs coming at you nonstop. Playing any class poorly is going to be easy - of course.

Yup i have to agree with you on this,i've played them all, perhaps more than most who were not lucky enough to get into full beta.Compared to classes like a BloodMage or a Psionicist or even the Necro in Vanguard,GW2 classes are childs play.
As for GW2 being the most atl friendly mmo, well that's a joke as well.Vanguard, 19 races ,15 classes all with their own starter areas and quest chains and diplomacy quests,GW2 doesn't even come close when it comes to atl availability in Vanguard.
For spvp dag/dag theif is by far the most faceroll and idiot can play it setup in the game. Even with heartseeker nerf. Takes absolutely no skill at all.

don't you just twirl your axes around and everything melts?:P
I find that offensive. I don't twirl like some ballerina. I move in a specific manner to slash at my foes. Humpf.
But I don't like axes. I prefer 2 handed or longbow thank you very much.
Ranger Gaurdian warrior i do not die unless i make a major mistake
Necro seems medium untill you get your army of pets
Elementalist is by far the hardest and i can die alot, it doesnt take much to bring you down !!
This is from a PvE perspective only
In PvP Elemantalist has alot of OSHIT RUN FOR THE HILL buttons that can get you out of danger in moments notice.
Ranger in small scale pvp is epic to play
Warrior in zergs are wortless unless you go ranged with a gun / bow and stick to that
Necro is awesome just like elemental, not us much escape move's but not bad at all
Gaurdian in pvp is my buff bot, i go ranged in zergs and melee in small scale battles.
Only thing iam getting tired from is servers that cap your whole map in the night and the endless long queues.
Today i stood in the queue for 4 hours and got in after 5 min i got an error....reloging and reque means another 4 hours of longer to get into WvW again
Guardian is way "easier" than Warrior from my experience of playing both to 30+.
Well, easy is not fair towards my guildies who play a guardian - to be top notch at supporting his group, a guardian as to be very good. But concerning solo survivability, there's no doubt. Guardian is much harder to kill than warrior.

Looks like we play our warriors the same way - even though I like to switch to dual swords for PvP for some bleeding world of hurt

Psh... I roll 2 handed in PvP. Gotta love the damage of 2 handed sword and the cc ability of 2 handed hammer.

I've played 4 to lvls 15 - 22.
Easiest/strongest
Ranger
Medium
Necro, Engineer (lower than the Necro)
Difficult/Weak
Thief

As for GW2 being the most atl friendly mmo, well that's a joke as well.Vanguard, 19 races ,15 classes all with their own starter areas and quest chains and diplomacy quests,GW2 doesn't even come close when it comes to atl availability in Vanguard.
Hard to make any judgements/comparisions on classes like this until you have played every class to at least level 40.
However, as the topic is 1-15 i'd say:
Hardest: Necro
Mid: Guardian, Engineer, Mesmer, Elementalist
Easiest: Warrior, Thief, Ranger
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
I find that offensive. I don't twirl like some ballerina. I move in a specific manner to slash at my foes. Humpf.
But I don't like axes. I prefer 2 handed or longbow thank you very much.
So far i have a
80 Ranger
40 Gaurdian
27 Necro
15 warrior
11 elementalist

Granted - but what beats some foe running from you with 20+ bleed stacks just to die a bit later thinking he's safe out of your range... :>
