Looking for something that won't hold my hand.

MurdusMurdus Member UncommonPosts: 698

I'm looking for a game that won't hold my hand.

I bought GW2 expecting lots of fun, but what I really am doing in the game is:

Look at map.

Tele.

Look at mini map

Follow map for gathering

Follow map for quests

Follow map for quest when I'm inside the same building as what needs to be done

Not pay attention at all to my surroundings

Press a few keys to win.

The game is so easy it's bugging me out. I like playing, but I actually miss being confused for a few minutes.

Can anyone help me out?

I'm looking for a populated game or server where I can move around the world and actually pay attention to it, remember it, and navigate by it. Not a map telling me literally EVERYTHING there is in the area.

EVE won't hold your hand, but it might knock you on the back of your head and drag you to it's lair.

Lies!  EVE will hold your hand.  Of course, your hand will no longer be attached to your arm... and you may have no idea where it ran off to with your hand, but EVE will hold your hand.  :)

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Well not everything. Map don't give you resource locations. Minimap does. Map don't give you way to find vistas and point of interests (well at least not all of them in case of POI), you must figure it out yourself.

Holding hands is not "lack of map". Holding hands is when game is telling you what to do next. GW2 don't do that. And it's not easy. You should know it if you were in beta tests. Problem right now is that DE don't scale properly when there is a zerg fest. Too much players on low lvl areas.

Anyway - you could play EVE (former EVE player here) but be prepared that there is no surounding. 99,9% of your time you will spend looking at tables with informations and user interface that provide you with everything. 3D world is just addon to the spreadsheet. But that game never hold your hand.

If you really need something that will require you to pay attention then find yourself game where mob can 2-shot you (so you have one mistake) and you must dodge and attack or something. I don't know such a game. Sorry.

Vanguard,at least download and try the FTP,its not perfect FTP system but you might like the game so much that you sub.You will really feel a bit dazed at first but discovery is fun.

Thanks for the answers folks. Regarding some of the suggestions:

EVE Online I can't play because as mentioned, the 3D environment is an add on to the spread sheets and I never felt immersed when I played. Although travelling vast distances and mining while being very scared was quite fun, it never really captured me.

I meant the map and minimap when I said what I said about GW2 being easy. I haven't gotten too far in the game and I'm not going to stop playing since there's no sub requrired, but I need something a little more difficult at least right now.

Vanguard is an awesome game but I left due to population issues. If there is a guild I can join that has a few lower level players that can run through the world with me, I might very well consider giving it another go after such a long break.

Anarchy Online I don't know much about. I watched a gameplay video and it looks pretty slow, the graphics bother me.

Can't do Rel Por or UO because they are 2D and I cringe. Just not for me.

You know OP you can not look at the map, or in the lower left hand corner of the map, turn off the icons that are leading you. :)

Vanguard gets my vote for just a big open game with minor hand holding

Vanguard went ftp last month - should see plenty of low level players

For this part I'd recommend The Secret World.

Forum Post count does not = Game Intelligence or Knowledge  it just shows how often people like to talk.

I can only think of two MMO's that do just that, Eve is certainly top of the list followed closely by The Secret World.  Sure some of TSW's questing is traditional and following waypoints, but some of it completely blows your mind away.  From a simple task of reading sheet music to a rather more tricky decoding morse code (without in-game tools) to even researching ancient texts, philosophers lives and artists' works in Google is not unusual in solving some of these crazy quests.  During these - you wish there was a hand to hold!

I would keep your eye open for the new Darkfall:  Unholy Wars.  I think, and don't quote me on this, that if you buy Darkfall now you don't have to buy Unholy Wars.  Everything will be wiped though so I would not get to heavily invested in anything.

In GW2 if you open the map you can turn off things so they dont show on there or the mini map just a thought.

To what extent don't you want hand holding?

As mentioned by someone already, Wurm Online is truly hardcore in that respect. You'll start with a compass and a few basic tools, but you'll lose those plenty and then you're travelling by landmarks or even using the sun to indicate direction. You need to feed yourself, drink, repair your tools, craft - and don't even think about attacking something until you know what you're doing.

Graphics might not be to your taste and there aren't a huge amount of players but if it's hardcore you're lookling for, you should try it out.

Majority of TSW quests are still go where quest gps show you, and kill / or click red-highlighted thingies.  Of course there are some investigation quests where you have to decrypt, think, etc but still whole game as general is quite hand-holding.

I think OP is actually looking for diffrent game DESIGN. More in like of old mmorpg's where you had to figure out preety much everything by yourself and if you failed game kicked you in the tooth mercilessly.

Yea I am watching it very closely. Very excited for the release on [knock on wood] November 20th. With AV's track record, we could be waiting until next year, but it seems they got their shit together this time around. In the announcement video Tasos stated "we know no one is going to wait very long."

I played Darkfall for a while and it was a TON of fun, but the community was hard to get into, literally, and knowing that won't change won't be a problem because of the wipe. Once I'm on a level playing field with them, it'll be much easier to get involved in some large political movements there, which is what interests me the most about that game.

Until that releases though I think I'm going to with Vanguard here, and I'll be back if it doesn't work out.

Wurm Online isn't smooth so I can't play it. It bugs me out. TWS is too much money and I heard the combat wasn't too great, but the investigation missions seem interesting but probably not worth $75.

    DF UW.

    Full loot.

    Housing.

    Ships.

    FPS.

    Not much holding hand there....

Go fish 1 hour, someone sees you, you run, you die, you loose 1 hour fishing and gear.

    TRY IT:

Eve is as boring as watching wet paint dry but yeah, it wont hold your hand.

Darkfall is more fun and it also does not hold your hand but you need to wait for the expansion, Unholy Wars.

Other than that there are very few modern MMO's which wont hold your hand...

Darkfall : Unholy Wars comes out November 20.  It is a full loot open world pvp game that is very dynamic, entertaining, and challenging.  http://www.darkfallonline.com/uw .  Here is a list from their website that lists some key elements.

    • Massive Land and Naval PvP Battles: Thousands of players can participate simultaneously in wars and sieges on land and sea, in real-time, on a single server.
    • A Huge, Seamless World: The world of Agon is a large open world that consists of both land and water and gives the freedom to players to uncover its hidden secrets.
    • Flexible Roles: Choose role at will, switching from meat shield to master mage to benevolent healer. Players can switch between roles, skills, spells, and ability boosters on the fly. Develop your skills in all roles and experience the game in a multitude of different ways over time or specialize in a single role and be the one your friends depend on to fulfill that calling.
    • Full Loot: You keep what you kill. Players can loot all of the goods from a slain enemy, and vice versa.
    • Persistence: Players can affect the fabric of the game world, constructing and fortifying cities across Agon and building empires that last as long as they can defend them
This game is NOT a wow clone, it is completely unique (hell Tera stole the concept imho),  they built the game from the ground up.  The oringinal darkfall online is still up and running there is no fee to buy it you only pay the subscription.  It does not hold your hand so i would recommend looking at some tutorial videos online to get the hang of it.  You can max a character in 2 -3 weeks if you know what you are doing.

    Best of luck.
