about moba games

About games such as dota, hon, lol and the like:

if you want to start with one of those, then, as far as I know, to be somewhat decent, that requires you to learn by heart the abilities and strategies of each hero. Which can be more than a hundred. And the more heroes are patched in, the more you got to learn.

I guess that's good for any player who has been in such a game from the beginning. But for new players? Ain't it somehow crazy that you have to learn the strategies of hundreds of characters to be more than bad?

I played LoL when it was new, then stopped. Sometimes I think about getting back into a moba game, but the thought of spending countless hours of digging through stats and strategies to be even decent as a casual gamer is putting me off.

Or do I miss here something?

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

    Pretty much.

There's only one way to play mobas and that' the ALL-IN mode.

Meaning you spend a lot of time practising minor things (i.e last hitting), reading about champions (old/new), watching pro games and of playing playing playing playing. In LoL you probably need to put in some cash aswell to open the FOTM champions faster and actually learning them.

Also you get flamed for every single mistake, even the ones that you didn't do.

League of Legends might look like a casual and fun game, but it's really serious and hardcore when you actually get into it.

Personally if I were to start playing moba now I'd probably go with Dota 2 since it's new game and will be fully free (no buyable champions) once released.

But yeah unless you have a tough skin and the mental drive to master MOBA games, don't go for it.

I've had the same experience. Gamespy recently ran an article about this phenomenon, they call it the "burden of knowledge". A decent read if you've got a few minutes to spare: http://pc.gamespy.com/articles/122/1225979p1.html

Personally, I've played LoL semi-competitively for about two years but haven't touched the game since March. The more champions they release, the less I feel inclined to pick up the game again, thinking of the dozens of hours I'd have to spent to learn the new champs and even re-learn the old ones since Riot can't help themselves from tweaking everything, all the time. Plus the lack of a new 6v6 map and the rigid meta are really, really boring.

  • I don't know what you guys are talking about, I've been playing LoL since about May, just through playing the game you learn the strategies, I'm not even level 30 yet, and I still know most of the champs skills and such, what they normally build in, how to counter, etc. In 4 months of playing, no more than two hours a day(I'm a student, so I have lots of free time for gaming). And LoL offers a PBE system, which is basically a separate account, where you are gifted the currencies, both currency that is bought with actaul cash, and the currency you get through playing the actual game. No, you don't get infinite, it's gifted as you spend it, the point is so that you try every aspect of the game. This seperate account has no influence on Ranked matches. It's completely obsolete from the normal game. Yes, you do have to spend a lot of time to even be comparable to the pros, but what game don't you have to master every little thing except Tic-Tac-Toe? In my opinion, MOBAs are a chance to learn a new, addictive game, without having to pay. Paying is an option, not a neccesity.

Plus, LoL offers an AI system, where you don't have to be serious or worry about other gamers getting angry. Start a custom 5v5, and add all bots. And if you want to play with others and be casual, play unranked.

AnorexicSeagull, please come back when you've played more than 200 matches and are at least familiar with concepts such as carrying, jungling, supporting and tanking. You'll see that having a vague notions of a champ's four abilites and passive just doesn't cut it.

And playing vs. bots? It's hard to take your post seriously.

You're implying I haven't played over 200 matches? I understand all those concepts, as well as playing as them. You have to understand the abilities, CDs, ratios, and the whole 9 yards. I know what I'm doing, don't think my relatively low amount of time mean I know nothing and am just another noob. I have carried, I have jungled, I have supported, I have tanked, I have played AP mid. The game is relatively easy to follow and play.

And I don't play bots, the point was to say that you don't always HAVE to play pvp if you don't want to. I don't quite get what you're trying to say by that. It's a method where you can easily sneak in a game without people and not care about the outcome. In case you don't own a PBE account.

I have disliked every moba game I have ever tried, the game play is boring and the people who play them are the worst kind of online gamer. I don't see why they are so popular.
