I can buy a year long sub for Rift, get a free expansion, plus everything else you mentioned you purchased for about half what your paying.

Why is this such a good model again?

Rift has a decent sized, dedicated playerbase.  Someone guesssed around 300k earlier, which is about what I estimate it to be.  Games do not need eleventy billion subs like WoW has(had) to be successful.  Rift is successful and will continue to be because Trion is dedicated to their game and it wasn't just a blantant box sales grab like so many releases(SWToR I'm looking at you).

Rift is fine as is.  If you want B2P or cash shop games, there are plenty out already.

Oh! I just noticed you hit on some of the same points as me after I made my post. Agreed though, well said.

People are cheap. 15 (or less depending on your plan) a month for a game that gets tons of updates is peanuts.

P.S. A game with a more than stable player base does not need any saving.

Rift has under 300k subscriptions and although profitable its not groundbreaking either.  If they implemented a B2P with cash shop similar to GW2 I guarentee you they would double their concureent userbase and triple their profits.  Sub based games are a dieing breed and theres only room for one currently.

Incorrect. People say sub based games are dying due to misinformation. Sub isnt dying, its the constant wow clones that are dying. I guarantee you if a mmo came out that was amazing and not a wow clone then people wouldnt hesitate to spend 15$ a month. Rift started off as a WoW clone but slowly its making it self different. Housing, arfifacts, world events, cross faction guilds (pve servers only), instant adventures, chronicles, and a amazing update schedule (major patch every 1-2 months)

Hartsman said some time ago on the forums that Trion is happy with the subs they have. Sure they would love more but they are nowhere near close needing to go B2P or F2P.

i hope RIFT will stay with a sub. i m not playing it anymore but i respect both the game and trion. for many reasons, i dont want any of the games i like to go b2p.

Rift dosen't need 'saving'. And no, it also dosen't need a cash shop revenue model.

Adopting one would effect the game's core design in prfound ways you obviously don't even consider when saying such a thing.

And housing..? It is actually something that would make me resub. That and the amazing content the new xpack seems to be delivering.

There will always be room for quality games running a sub in the market, despite lazy fashionable thinking.

Please no. Thus far B2P means terrible customer service and the lack of simple things like character restores.

Oh and a highly encouraged cash shop.

Oh it will happen and most likely within 9 to 12 months.  But it will probably be a F2P with cash shop model.

If this would happen, I would delete Rift form my HD. I don't like "f2p" games at all. GW2 just showed me again why.

    F2P no thanx!

People were saying that 9-12 months ago.

BTW Rift already has a Cash Shop. I can click on it and I get a window that allows me to buy things from the game's interface.

I can buy all kinds of nice things like
3 different package deals with the upcoming expansion. I can add 30 or 60 days game time to my account. If you need more, there is also the opportunity to purchase character and guild name changes.

DAMMIT TRION! Double dipping with a cash shop and a sub!

All joking aside, For now, just moving their web based services into the game, is fine. But if they ever put anything in there I can use or wear, I'm out permanently.

Went through that nonsense with Anarchy Online.

I wasn't a fan of how you could upgrade your account with the various editions that come out.  I'm glad they limited that - because it had the cash shop feel to it.  Then again, that gets into the whole CE concept.  Because almost any game with a CE is offering more... remember when it used to be cool stuff outside of the game?  Music, artwork, mousepads, headphones, etc, etc, etc?  Then with the advent of digital downloads and thus digital CE - meh...

...but yeah, glad there wasn't an AoH every 3-6 months - but have to wonder if there will be the SL:AoH 2-3 months after SL.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Yep, I bought Rift and on day 1 realized I needed the mount and the bigger bag. KaChing! ten bucks later.........

Not a fan of that either, but no getting around that one. I just have to chose the least of evils I guess.
