Am I too late to start?

I am 36 years old. I am a lifelong fan of the fantasy setting. I played tabletop RPGs for many years. I also was an avid computer buff for decades. I remember when EQ came out several years ago, it seemed like a gift. Its like I was born to play that game. It sounded like everything I ever wanted in a game.

But at the time I was recently married, starting a new job, and had a new child. I made a choice NOT to play EQ in order to spend time with my family.

Now I wish I had chosen to play. All of these MMORPGs have come and gone and I have missed it completely. Every time I consider getting involved, I talk to someone who turns out to be level 50+ and speaks in terms that I don't understand - mobs, grinding, aggro, etc. It completely intimidates me and turns me off to starting as the "newbie". I feel like I've missed out and its too late to get on board.

Opinions - is it too late to start? If I bought WoW, would I be completely lost? Would I have fun, or just get pushed aside by the powergamers?

Thanks for your advice.

In my opinion, it's never too late to start. WoW would be a good place to start, completely user friendly. The 'getting killed out of nowhere by other players' is not as bad as it seems, it happens occaisionally yes, but not like all the time. I'd say you'd be pretty safe joining WoW

Mobs - spawns/places where monsters to fight appear

Grinding - endlessly killing mobs to gain exp

Aggro.. no clue on that one.. haha.

EDIT: if you are a fan of tabletops, it's tough to find true role playing in MMO's these days. Don't let this turn you off however, there is still much fun to be had

no, you are NEVER too old to start mmorpgs, but before you do, i must warn you. MMORPGs are like drugs, 99% of them suck! but you cant stop playing them. i too have fallen victim to this disease, i played WoW for 2 months but my good computer crashed so untill its back up i cant play :( but yea, WoW is an excellent game especially for newbies.

Aggro= straying to close to a Mob (previously defined) and it attacks you... it is Aggrivated :)

It's always a good time to start. MMORPG's have the potential to be the best games of any genre. Sadly, few have some close so far. Easiest MMORPG to get into would be WoW - lots of new MMO'ers there. Fun gameplay until last few levels and playstyle variety.

    Side note:
Agro - Agression of mobs (they are hitting you). He who has the agro is taking the damage
Tanks - High health warriors in fronline to absorb damage
    MOB - Monster Or Boss.
PvE - Fighting AI controlled monster
    PvP - Fighting other players
    Grinding - Leveling-up
Spec/build/template - Generally refers to skills and classes you have chosen

Id say go for it, WoW is a really easy game to get into.
As for picking up the language, you'll get it, its not hard.
more words are just shortend forms of the word, or acronyms.
once you see it used on context, it just sorta comes naturally. do be surprised if you find yourself spewing it occasionaly when your talking rl..
    er in real life lol.

If you pick up a copy of WoW along with the strategy guide you'll do fine. It even has a lexicon of terms inside it (the WoW manual does too for that matter). If you were really in to PnP RPGs, WoW will probably bore you to tears in two or three months (although it will be like doing drugs while getting a blowjob every time you log until then). At that point you'll have enough of the basics down that you'll be able to pick up anything else that interests you and do just fine. Keep in mind that all of these games (the popular ones at least) have new players joining all the time.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

i play with tons of people alot older than you, age isn't a factor. just dont worry about what other people are doing, have fun exploring. if you need to learn what something means, just google it or check a fansite or ask someone.

most people are cool in these games once you get to know them and alot are older than you. good friend of mine in daoc is 54 and plays for hours every night, mmorpg werent even around when he was 34.

As a new player, WoW is a good choice, it is pretty much the tutorial to MMOs in general, and a fairly good tutorial.

Now, you need to be aware that no matter the game, many harsh peoples are around.  Most are nice, but some are harsh.  Dont let other players intimidate you, especially not the hardcore players who try to master the game and will come to you with insane concepts.  Those players are to be ignore, dont even answer them beyond the minimum.  You lose nothing at not knowing PowerGuild & friends, in fact, the less you meet them, the better you are.

And now is prolly better then ever to start WoW, all those power hungry players are in the 60ish multiples times or gone, so you should encounter more nice players.

City of Heroes would be a very good choice as well to start in the MMOs.

never to late to start mmos nor is it ever to early hehehe

hee hee well i wanted to reply to this topic, but it seems everyone has the same thing to say, and in this case thats a good thing.

i am going to buy World of Warcraft in a few days time, i believe. i havent played it yet, but i have heard nothing but great things about this game.

like everyone says, age isnt a factor.

however, like one of the previos people stated, there can be cruel people. dont even worry about them. thats a fact of life; there will be cruel people in every aspect of life. i hate it when i see someone insulting someone else for being new (or a Noob/newb/noobie/newbie). i mean, come on people! everyone was new to the game at one point! we all have to start somewhere. the way i play my games when i encounter someone new is to think "its not their fault they started when they did, and therefor are considered 'new' by the current reckoning. remember the golden rule. etc. etc. etc." yeah so basically my point is ignore those dumbasses who make fun of people for not knowing something about the game.

    peace. hope it helps.

WoW is a good choice to start, very easy to get into etc..

If you look for a more mature/complex game, you can also try Saga of Ryzom

WoW would be a good first choice. If you choose one of the newer servers, there won't be such a glut of level 60's running about the place. I'd recommend you choose a roleplaying server (PvP and Pve roleplaying servers are both available) as the community tends to be more mature. WoW is also very solo friendly, so you'll be able to find your feet without having to group with others. Don't let yourself be intimidated by anyone. There are always going to be players who are unfriendly and insulting -they're usually just sexually frustrated teenagers with undeveloped social skills having only ever had an intimate relationship with their hand. MMOs attract these sorts of people because it gives them an opportunity to gain an elevated status that they will never achieve in life. So sad. Just /ignore.

It's definitely not too late to start, go buy WOW, you'll love it. They do a great job of guiding you along in the early levels so it's not overwhelming.

    Baf - no idea

Kite -  To deal consistent damage to a mob while keeping your distance and trying not to get hit by it.

Proc -  When a weapon "activates" it's magical effect which could be extra elemental damage or a   buff for the wielder.

OOM - stands for Out of Mana.

Do I win 3/4 of the prize??

Nice-- Most people dont know what Proc means. You dont know how many times Ive said "proc" and people go "huh?"

Baf Means  Bring a Friend. When Mobs BAF, they bring a friend. While other mobs dont care if your killing off there buddys 2 inches from them, theyll stand there until you hit them.

It's not too late! I suggest, take a glance to the past games or browse the top listed games here! Check out their features and give them a try if you want! GoodLuck! image

Nope not to late. I am also in your age range with a wife and 3 kids. We all have our favorite games also.

Now you have alot more JUNK to choose from. There are soooo many clones and sloppy devs out there, I think anyone can make money in this industry.

If you are starting out and looking for a quality title, stick with World of Warcraft or Guild Wars. World of Warcraft is very newbie friendly and its a well made entertaining game. Guild Wars is also a very well made game. Its primary advantage is there is no monthly fee (in case you just want to test the water) downside is the community is a bit rough.

My advice is be very critical of anything you deside to drop money into besides those two.
