Do your "friends" have any background in creating games? If so, do you have any links/webpages that they have already completed? (i.e.. a portfolio?)

If you are going with the Runescape engine, do you mean your making it like Runescape?

If you are, here is my suggestion on the storyline: There is a peaceful kingdom, but the ruler
has recently died leaving his position of power. An unbalievably powerful and villainous::::27:: foe and
his minions take over the kingdom in a final charge and the throne is unwittedly handed to him.
Players must take part alone, or banded together, to take down the evil ruler and reclaim the
throne to the family of whoever that other ruler was (the good one)::::28::

Tell me If this helped you at all::::01::

    Thy Name is Matthew Phillips.
I have come to be your worst nightmare.

dont try too hard. your not going to make something great so dont expect to make any money either. just try it out and dont push yourself to near insanity. thats my advice image

At that point you should finally see that your plan will never work.

If You "think" you would be able to make an MMORPG I would suggest you have a look at this...it's quite good.

A decent MMO would cost millions of dollars and several years to develope. Although if you want to be like Blizzard I'm sure you can slap some shitty bugfest together in half a second then charge top dollar monthly to play it.

quick hint: aim low. By that I mean you should aim for a sever that can host 500 and use a cheap and/or open source graphics engine for the client. Another thing that wasn't covered in the earlier MMO building overview is the database that holds world and game state info. Don't re-invent the wheel, use SQL. If you have a couple of artists and a couple of coders you should have something useable in about about 6 months. With another 6 months of touching up, you should have a "budget" quality game that's ready to sell directly online. Just remember three things.

    1) keep it simple.

    2) Don't re-invent the wheel.

    3) and get something up and running quickly.

You can't just jump in and have Quake 4 overnight. Unless you're John Carmack. Make the simplest, bare bones prototype of your game and build off of that. It'll give you confidence as well as keep you from rewriting code that you did monthes earlier. Well..... not as much rewriting anyway.

Actually I think that you should really look into something other then a MMORPG if this is your first game, we have been working on our game for almost two years now and we finally have something to show for.  So far it's been headache after headache, there have even been times when we found that we had to lose 2 months of work easily because of a mistake we made during development.

If you are serious about game design then I would suggest you learn how to make something as simple as checkers or chess, because you will start to see that it's not something everyone can do right off the bat, it takes years of experience to even grasp everything that goes into a mmog.

Also, if you have someone experienced enough who understand the technical background of a mmog then I'd suggest you use either TrueVision3D or Torque, the two best middleware engines available to independent developers.

At any rate good luck! :)
