Will this be the WoW killer?

I just got back from a conference for Gamestop, and had a chance to play D&D Online. I gotta say "WOW!!!!!" I've been lookin at this game for a while w/ mixed opinions, but I now feel like this will be the next big mmorpg.

This game has all the good of everquest + all the good of world of warcraft + new unique elements.

Uhum.... DESTRUCTABLE ENVIRONMENT WITH HIDDEN ITEMS IN IT!!!!!! Your movements can help dodge!!! Meaning, if a giant swings his club at u and u backstep a couple steps from his weapons reach.. it doesn't hit you.. or I should say you gain a better chance of a dodge.

Now I'm wondering how everybody else feels.

WOW, for all it's pros and cons, at least has a game world.  Does DDO even have a game world?  Last I read, it's just instanced dungeons.  You can only do instanced dungeons so many times before it gets old.  Would be much better if they'd recreate the Forgotten Realms setting and let players travel about the world.

Killing WoW wont happen now (not that I dont want it to happens).

Will this game beat WoW in subscribtions?  It has a strong franchise, the strongest franchise that can possibly make it to the MMO world, so hell yes, it can.

Will it beat WoW?  All depend on Turbines.  No game has a better franchise and WotC marketing could teach SoE marketing a few tricks (SoE is the best Marketing team in the MMO world).  So Turbines will only have to blame themselves if they dont beat WoW...unless they listen to WotC designers, which are prolly the most ill informed designers...

This game has all the prime requisite to do to the MMO world what Blizzard did when they release WoW...add new players to it in numbers not foreseen?

If Turbines succeed (which I dont think they are going to do), this game could reach a 10 millions subscriber easily...completely outmatching the competitors.

D&D is to RPG what the NBA is to Baskettball.  If it fail, it is like if the players didnt care to miss their season for international nonsense.

I agree DDO is good ::::28:: but I don't think it will be a WoW killer with no PvP and instancing. It should do fairly well though especially with the extra time Turbine is taking to develop it even more. The graphics are top of the line and the gameplay is unique.

If DDO is a hit it won't kill WoW. EQ is still kicking about and how many times has that had to survive a new mmorpg coming out.  I would say if the game is great you will never kill it cause it will always have it's fanbase.

If the game stinks it will die ala Asheron's call 2.

Sounds an odd thing to say, but only WoW will kill WoW. Can Blizzard keep churning out content fast enough? 1.8 test patch notes are out and they give a hint at the rumoured new raid zone in Silithus. I already know people leaving WoW, possibly in anticipation for DnL. How many subscribers are already thinking of leaving, but still play since there is no real alternative? One day WoW may implode under its own weight and if it does, it may not be pretty. Long time till that day though!

WoW mostly just needs more things for a level 60 player to do.  It is still overly linear, and has a pretty serious "I am done" plateau at the end.  Once they solve that, it'll have a better life expectancy.

I think WoW won't have a "killer" per se. WoW has brought a lot of new players to the MMO market. Players who will eventually tire of playing the same game and will look for other titles for a new and different experience. Their eventual migration will benefit all MMOs, but I wouldn't look for any one game to replicate the success of WoW and knock it out of the top spot.

Yes DDO has a game world. It is based off the Eberon setting which is a very in depth world. I can see DDO pulling a great deal of WoW market for one reason, it is D&D. It is without a doubt the strongest rpg name ever.

I'm not sure if it will kill wow or not. I heard it doesn't have a crafting system, and crafting and player made goods really make MMO's in my humble oppinion. Ethier way it will be at least worth a try. i mean it's d&d the father of the MMORPG (except instead of pixilicous polygons it had pweter and dice and a little immagination).

It won't even cause a significant drop in WoW players... If Blizz feels threatend near DDOs release they will release info on some patch or xpack to bring focus to WoW. If they thought DDO would "Kill them" they could just buy out DDO online and bury it.

Doesn't mean one game is better then the other.... WoW will always appeal to more people than DDO.

I see nothing in the future that could cause the downfall of WoW other then bad management by blizzard.

DDO - instanced only, PvE only, D&D style, no crafting, mounts etc.... is all very niche... that means to like the game you have to be satissfied with what I just listed... if you want PvP, or presistance worlds, or don't like D&D your not going to likely like the game. WoW played it safe... The took everything people like in other games and threw it all into one.

    Want a metaphor?
    WoW=pizza
    DDO=tofu

You can't say pizza is better than tofu... but surely more people eat it here.
I think DDO will be a great game, but only enjoyed by a few (in comparision to WoW)

I agree, only Blizzard can kill WoW.  While I love the game, I leveld 2 characters up to level 60, got bored and quit.  Trying to get 30-40 people together to go through and instance is a nightmare.

DDO will not even put a dent into WoW.  While Turbine will defiantely blow you away with the graphics, gameplay is going to be the issue here.  The strict D&D gameplay is only going to appeal to a specific audience.  I truely worry that the younger A.D.D crowd will not find this game appealing.  Strike 2 for Turbine.

Its a pretty safe bet to say DDO wont even scratch WoW's player base. Were comparing a game with millions of players to one that will be doing well to pull in 200k most likely 100k long term.

Even if it was free monthly DnD would end up with smaller numbers than even Guild Wars since it has next to no asian market. Turbine is a fairly "shady" company, can hardly compare them to blizzard or even sony. (Note: when I say "shady" im being polite.)

I dont know what the next "Big" game will be but i can safely promise it wont be DDO in its current form.

I agree with you 100%, if the Devs at DDO want to make a game to engulf the D&D would, then they should create a complete world, Forgotten Realms would be great.  Then instances would be based on the area where the Mooks are in the world, ie: if youre in Waterdeep, then any instances would be based on what you find in Waterdeep, etc.

On a personal note, I am looking forward to this game, but if it doesn't have the feel of playing with a live GM, or if its only instances I can't see myself staying that long.  I played WoW for almost a year, and now I don't play anymore, because it has just got boring and way too linear.  I hope that DDO addresses some of these problems before release.

No, I don't think it will kill WoW... But it will probly take a few of its player base away. I know I'm already growing tired of WoW. Once you reach the high end it gets boring too fast.

No chance this game will kill off WoW.   It has forced grouping in it.  That feature alone will keep away the vast majority of the WoW players.  Tons of people will try the game just because of it being D&D but after seeing there is no soloing at all,  the casual playerbase will leave.   EQ2 tried to force grouping and after losing a large chunk of players to WoW (that caters to casuals) finally got it through there heads to add solo content.   Everything shouldn't be able to be solo'd but there should be the option to solo alot of content.

It won't kill WoW, rather if WoW doesn't change its stance it's going to get crushed under its own weight. Just before I remember all the posts about 'Will this be the EQ killer' and now we he have to change it to WoW.. let it have its moment of glory. It's going swell but it really needs to create some content for high-end.

My thoughts exactly!  The only thing that will kill WoW is WoW itself.  The game is extremely shallow and easy to me!  It did not hold my attention very long at all and the community is 1 out of 10.

I don't believe WoW and DDO are competing for the same audience. Although it's true that some that play WoW will probably switch to DDO, I don't see it pulling the entire player-base because the games are so different.

    Anyway, just my 2¢.

    so...

I'd agree with this comment wholeheartedly.  I'm pretty new to this game, but I'm old school from back in the days of pencil and paper as far as D&D goes, and the Forgotten Realms IMHO has been the most consistent storyline and setting in modern online gaming.  I've played the Baldur's Gate series and Icewind Dale series more times than I care to remember simply for the storyline and the way things mesh.

I truly hope that this matches up if I'm going to be spending that many hours ignoring the girlfriend late into the hours of the morning.

Having played WoW and PnP D&D I can only say that it will be the WoW killer for me. I did not care for WoW and have been eagerly awaiting the release of DDO since I left the DAoC realms behind (being tired of it already).

The more I read about DDO the more I grimace; there are some things like the instanced dungeons that are not appealing to me in the least; the DAoC instances were so lacking that I did it only once out of sheer boredom.

All my hopes now lay in the hands of DDO (until Warhammer Online is released anyway).

A WoW killer I don`t think so but DD wil be more appealing to true RPG players with the DD rules and so on.AS for many players leaving WoW i`m one of them as the game is boring to death imageafter lvl 60 so I` looking forward to DDO and LOTRO.Will Turbine make the right choices after launching the game to keep players willing to quest? That`s the question

Nothing needed to come along to kill WOW for me. After a coule of lvl 60's, and running the same instances a few times, it was over. I may have kept my subscription and played occasionally, but the way blizzard screws more things up every patch is pathetic, and I wasn't going to keep giving them money for that.

Blizzard support is the worst I have ever dealt with for anything. And there attitude towards there customers is just as bad.

I'm playing EVE now, and they are really great.

Yes of course it will. We're talking about the D&D genre. With WotC and Turbine, will see constant upgrades and improvement that will out last the already dieing content of WOW.image
