EVE Online: Core Empire Systems Straining

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Every so often, we have the pleasure here at MMORPG.com to step outside of the realm of "real-life" game news and try our hand at reporting more fictional "in-game" news. EVE Online has given us that opportunity today.

Core Empire Systems Straining From Traffic

A number of Empire solar systems are straining from the massive traffic running through them in recent months, and severe measures need to be taken to rectify the situation. Local authorities are negotiating with mega-corporations who base their business operations in Rens, Oursulaert and Jita to move some of their assets to nearby solar systems so the load on the core areas may be diverted.

Pilots and corporations based in the Rens, Oursulaert and Jita systems are encouraged to relocate their businesses, and start using their connections with agents in nearby systems. Mega-corporation officials point out that pilots can remain in business with them and advise capsuleers to utilize their agents in lower security systems, where the agent missions and contracts are more lucrative.

A Rens pilot, when asked about the situation, stated that "The go*bleeeep* da*bleep* station manager bast*bleep* had me waiting for 7 minutes before allowing me to undock. I'm going to the nearest 0.6, where you get complimentary bathrobes from agents. Fu*bleep* this *bleeeeep* *bleep*."

An Oursulaert native went on record, saying "They better fix the *bleep* *bleep* *bleep* jump *bleep* gates before I *bleep**bleep**bleep* and then some." He then shouted something incomprehensible at nearby Customs Officials, subtle foam beginning to assemble at the corners of his mouth as he finally became able to jump to the next system.

Similar stories have been reported in systems like Nonni, Sobaseki, Inoue and Isaziwa. Wasona Binge reported that rush hour traffic was approaching "Clusterfu*bleeep* proportions."

I wouldn't exactly call this "fictional" because the core message in the story is true. Those systems are really over crowded and become very laggy during primetime. Sometimes it feels like it does take a few minutes to load into one of those systems.

I totally agree Playdead, Rens was always pretty busy at the best of times, but since the highways were removed, major trade centers have died and some syatems are very overcrowded.

Protect me from what I want.

CCP loves to boast when they get a pitiful increase in the number of people online at any one time, but when they have issues with their providing a seemless product to their subscribers they try to bluff it off by making light of it. I hope that there is another company out there developing a game that builds on the features of Eve but without the shortsightedness that its designers appear to have. Eve is a great game whose only flaw are the people who own and operate it.

CCP is one of the few dev team who try explain what happens and why. Its not good that bad things happen, but they at least give insight why it happened and show effort to improve the situation. They keep contact with the playerbase and, yeah sure also sometimes make some lighthearted comments... so what?.. they are humans too, and what should they do about a situation they can't change atm? Whine on the forums, like some players? Improving the performance of a game is a bit more complicated than tweaking the settings of your gfx card.

Also if you would have read the forums or the dev blog hey have stated that new equipment is already on its way (The chief dev also posted a link to the hardware they purchased), but since its very specialized it needs a few weeks and some of it a few months to arrive, test, and go active. The only real mistake CCP made is underestimating the desire for people to have major trade hubs, and with the addition of so many new players the situation started to have a major effect about 2 months ago. But sadly that is a situation that can't be changed so fast. And good luck, finding a game of the same quality and features like EVE with not so "shortsighted" devs. Don't you think that its a *bit* contradicting to say "a great game" ... "who's only flaw are the people operating it" ? Dotn forget, those "flawed" people came up with the game.

Although I don't play this game any more (I don't have the time) I have to say it is one of the best designed games out there. I'm glad to see it at the top of the list. As for the dev's their honest, up front attitude to the player base is refreshing and should be taken as an example to other dev teams, *cough* SOE *cough*. Is nice to read a message from the devs that’s not full of corporate spin and bull s**t.

Maybe one day I'll have enough free time to play this game again, until then GW will have to do.

There are only 10 types of programmers. Those that understand binary and those that don't.
