Wired: on WoW losing it's cool

This isn't meant to be a trolling or inflammatory post, I just thought this was an interesting read (as I am interested in all MMOs, and obviously WoW was, at one time, one of my biggest obsessions):

Personally I feel this article is just pissing in the wind until we see what the MoP sales numbers are like.

Was a very difficult disjointed read with a major bias, just a bunch of cut and paste soundbites from people who were not going back to the game?

Was World of Warcraft ever 'cool', i don't think so and i say that as a player who has been there since launch and still playing strong today. Has the population dropped and will this expansion sell less than the others, well the answers are yes we know that already and no-one knows until they release some figures to tell us, so until that point it is all speculation.

From a player perspective i am still enjoying the game, loving the new expansion, but i also appreciate that there will be those that have burned out on it as you would naturally expect given the age of the game.

Anyone who's been a gamer prior to the ps2 era knows that none of us ever played games to be cool or because we thought they might in some way be popular.  WoW was no exception, yes celebrities and all sorts of people played it. And lots of people still do play it.

If people were expecting WoW to continue it's meteoric upwards trend indefinitely must be the same people who thought the housing market could only go up. WoW has been out and successful for a very long time, and who knows how long it will last before its servers are shuttered. I mean, we have mmos out there that run on 200k-300k populations.

I will say that MoP is a pretty good expansion so far, much better than Cata and we'll see if it's better than Wrath, but not too shabby for a game that's been out as long as it has.

Anecdotal evidence around my house supports the premise of this article.

I did buy Cata, only to see the revamped worlds (grr, had to buy all the expansions in between as well) and decided to pass this time around.

No big deal, but more interestingly, my son and his friends, who played every expansion when they came I out ( I recall waiting in line outside of Gamestop at midnight for BC) have all decided to pass this go around.

That's 6 more copies that at this point won't be bought, though there's a decent chance maybe they'll reconsider down the road.

As for seeing how the results go, one thing most likely, if this exapansion underperforms Blizz will keep a lid on it until the time they can spin it more properly, most likely after Christmas sales come in.

But it is just that, anecdotal, as i have purchased 2 copies for both of my accounts, my brother and father have also purchased and several guild members who took as break a few months back have returned for the expansion so that is 4 copies for people who were playing anyway as well as half a dozen who weren't playing before the launch.

I wouldn't expect this expansion to do as well as some of the others at launch as the population trend was most definately on a downward spiral, but from a personal perspective i don't see it being the total disaster that some seem to be predicting. Again, i have nothing to back that up but my own personal view and experience, so will have to wait and see for any figures Blizzard eventually see fit to release.

It's not like WoW needs reviews. I mean come on, it's WoW. I bought the expansion and got exactly what I expected without knowing anything more than Pandas monks and pokemon.

That said, I'm leveling a monk, and well, It's WoW. What can I tell you? Will the endgame consist of nothing more than dungeon queues and raids? Idunno. I hope there will be at least a few things to do for non or casual raiders. If you like WoW at any level, then that's how you will find this expansion. No surprises here.

But as it is, this site tends to be a crowd that has at one time left wow for whatever reason and moved on, found this site while looking for their next game. I think there is a heavy bias against WoW here. I know that's how I found this site, looking for something new.

There is a heavy bias against wow on most non blizzard forums.  Why?  because since I can remember Wow has had a very active community on the official forums and that is where most pro-Wow people that like to read and  post on forums do it.  Does not mean that there are not happy people that still play wow and still like it, just that those people are not here and to me it makes sense.  If you play the biggest MMO ever you probably don't feel you have to waste your time defending it or hyping it on random MMO forums.

Didn't everyone quit WoW because they got tired of the long queues?  :D

I think it's because so many there are so many people who have played and disliked WoW--which is, in turn, because so many people have played WoW, period.  There are a lot more ex-WoW players who dislike the game than for any other MMORPG, because the number of ex-WoW players who dislike the game greatly exceeds the total number of players who have played most other particular games, whether they liked the game or not.

It's not that everyone hates WoW.  A lot of people like it, too.  It's kind of like saying that there are a lot more people who dislike the President of the United States than who dislike the mayor of Kalamazoo, Michigan.  It's the visibility of the office, not the present occupant.

Not sure why you're bringing up Age of Wushu in a Warcraft thread, but w/e.
