this was the last time i bit on the hype for a game
about 2 years ago i dropped cash on this even though i had mixed reservations after playing a crappy demo of it at Gencon 2003
I will never do it again
this game was so bad.
i think D&D Online will be just as bad as well judging by what I played at Gencon this year
Comments
So, you buy this game 2 years ago...and now you say it was bad?
Did you play it for 2 years (I hope not)? If you didnt play it for 2 years, why did you wait until now to feedback us about it?
What is so bad in it? I only play it 2 weeks, myself, but I did enjoy those 2 weeks, yet I left because it was not what I was looking for.

Yeah, welcome to the year 2005...
...where HZ is still struggling and at best, a medeocre game. Yes. you can play & enjoy it and yes it's lag is reduced and yes you can have fun in it.... but thats the same for any game for $12/month.
Saga of Ryzom is nearly identical to HZ yet it offers a better gamming experience IMO.. and it came out THIS YEAR. EQ2, WoW and City of Heros did aswell. Horizons has been re-released and no matter what they do to the game... it's tainted and just best left alone. Horizons simply cannot compete with other offerings released in 2005.
Almost all MMORPG change over a 2 year peroid, but it funny how Horizons fans thinks it's so great that the lands of Istaria have been redone and more quests & Mobs been added. In that same peroid EQ has had 2 expansions, EQ2 has already released their 1st expansion and Ryzom has had major updates and new land added.... all MMORPG in the last 2 years have updated.
...yet Horizons has had the least amount of change in the last 2 years of any MMORPG and those playing are so overwhelmed and amazed by such remedial updates. Horizons is no different than any game thats been out for the last 3 years... they evolve and get better, but HZ been sooo constricted that once the community see change they get all giddy. People who tout this game need to get out more and try other free trials out there... they be amazed at how out of date Horizons has become.
Present day Horizons is still based off the same kernal/code that made the game a bore when it flopped 2 years ago. Having gone bankrupt and then 6 major patches later, Horizons is touted as Amazing by it's fan base...? U decide.
Hence, you have the 14 day free trial at your finger tips, none of banter means anything because you can experience this great game yourself... HERE. LOL
I always find it funny, but yet at the same time very sad, that an individual not only has to hang on some forums to belittle a game they don't even play, but also have to belittle the players/community of the game also ( see Zvorak's post as an example).
You see ... some people, including myself, have played those games you listed (which I really liked except SoR) and still chose to continue or return to Horizons. Why? Well some would like to have you believe because we as Horizon players are so mindless that we just can't see the so called "truth" and "reality" that exists just beyond our rosey colored glasses (yep, the ole childish fan type vs slam type posts). This is absolute utter bs. The truth is that most, if not all, players are well aware of the issues that plague this game and will be more then happy to list both the pro's and con's of the game when asked or needed to do so.
Some people have just found something in this game that they can enjoy .. everyone from new players, returing players and players who have been there all along. For whatever reason they have decided this game is worth playing and paying for. Of course many have come and not liked what they seen and left accordingly maybe to return later .. maybe not.
Myself, I've played those games, read about the many games coming out in the future ( I'm even in beta's for some of them) and yet still I'm very unimpressed by what I see. However, while not perfect by any stretch, at this time Horizons is the game that is closest to what I'm looking for in a game. That combined with the fact that I liked the changes I have seen so far over the past few months and I'm glad the dev's are working hard to finally take this game into a positive direction. This is what keeps me playing Horizons and enjoying my time doing so. What happened in the past, is in the past. Right now I see a team that is in no way operating and making the same mistakes as happened in the past. As long as this is the case, then this game has a future, if they somehow repeat their past mistakes and didn't learn from them then this game will fail. But right now it appears they chose not to work towards failure and for this I'm glad.
So .. while many may not like the game and maybe never will, there is still some who know what we've got and have an idea as to what is to come and like what we see. All anyone can hope for is that they find that game that is right for them and that they enjoy. So ... all the - "this games better then your game" - for "w x y z" reasons is absolutely irrelevant. Try it ... love it ... hate it, make up your mind and just find the game thats right for you. Goodluck in your search, anything has got to be better then trolling forums I would think
There's no accounting for tastes...
Horizons is worse than many games in some regards, true.
And it has unique features no other game has, and these are enough to keep people playing it.
If you find other games with such extensive crafting, where you can build structures and machines on player-owned plots (or lairs) and can play a dragon character which can learn to fly and all in the same game -- feel free to tell the world about it. Its then and only than that hz can be pronounced bad (=inferior in all impirtant aspects to other games in the market).
You see, the Opening Poster stated his opinion/concerns, so I started watching this thread. Waiting for Khoal to chime in with his more than typical 1 line funny post, when someone else also doesnt like HZ or what the've experienced in the past with the game. I just waited... knew he'd rear his head and stear the thread away from Horizons shortcommings into an unvalid arguement. The tactic isn't sound, but I've found it rather amusing looking back over the last 3 months of his posts. They are ALL the same. So, if he doesnt post on a thread I wont.
But then theirs YOU.... who always comes in with these long winded post seemingly about notihing other than you've played the game for 2 years and like it. But you never state why Horizons has held your amusment for all those years. Either your stupid and not objective, a fake account Dev trying to protect this fragile game, or truely LOVE this game...! If thats the case your in an extremely small minority and have not come to terms with this fact. MOST find Horizons is a piece of Crap.
You played the game end like it... I've attemped to play the game many times and cant stand it. This is utter amusment for me to see if you two are actually real people or not. NOBODY can play this game for 2 years and still "love" it without being blinded by the fanboi'sim. Your so absolutly in love with your dragons and your power within the game you havn't given yourself an objective alternative to compair to.
If there are only 500 people playing and 50% are dragons... I've found it just a tad silly playing within a world with alot of people all playing the same race and thinking they are somthing special and intoxicated by their own power. When in fact your nothing different than the next dragon. Horizons is about Dragons, nothing more.
ON most threads majority of the people recite the same ol'e reason HZ zucks and after living on these boards forever you probably get sick of hearing them... but they are not sinking in. There are only 3 people ever on these boards defending Horizons.... Same ol'e 3 people comming up with the same old 3 reasons they keep on playing.
Tell you what, I'll meet either of you within these trials:
Horizons is stale and boring... thats why I quit and my guild quit. My cousin said the same of all his class mates in which i didnt even know he played MMORPG's.
The burden is on you to PROVE to us Horizons is better than Saga of Ryzom or Original EQ or even the stupid and now declinning EQ2. You offer no proof and certainly not any highly detailed opinions.
Yeah.
HZ has a few good points, and a few bad points (client performance still being the biggest IMO. There are games out there with worse content than HZ, but don't have framerates of 10-15FPS for most of the playerbase (barring those with great computers)).
Personally one of the things I really hate about games forums is the constant trolling by people who no longer play the game:P. I mean comeon, some played the game 2 years ago and is just now posting? That is crazy. Who holds a grudge that long? I only post on the forums of games that I play. I don't feel I have the right to troll the forums of a game (or game company) that I don't like.
*shrug* Just me though I guess.
I see .. so beause I come out and say something good about Horizons (although long winded about nothing it appears) then I'm either 1) stupid and non objective (thanks by the way) 2) fake account Dev (wishes I was a dev) 3) truly love this game (guess that depends on how you define love). Hmm, I'll take 4) none of thee above (but I really don't expect you to agree, nor do I really care). Yes, I'm part of the small minority and yes most do not like Horizons, else I wouldn't be in the minority heh? I really don't need explain to YOU or ANYONE ELSE why I play Horizons and why I like it. I just tell people to try the free trial, if they like it great, if they don't then I hope they do, or have, found a game they like. Nothing more really needs to be said. Btw, have we met before on another forum? By the way you talk about my posts I'm assuming we have
Don't play a dragon, nor have I, I play a human paladin. Me = rabid fanboi, of course. Sorry you didn't like the game I'm sure you have stated your reasons for it over extensively on any forum you can find and to anyone who may lend you an ear. Me, I would have justed stated why I didn't like it and moved on .. but hey more power to ya.
I'll say again, I don't play a dragon. I'm not even for sure 50% of the population are dragons as I seem to run into many other races also. My char is something special though, even if only to me
First off, I've only started to post on this baord within the last several months - and have only made a few posts at best, so not for sure exactly what your talking about. Hell, I had never even posted to forums before up until the fall of last year. In truth, I don't post much at all anymore because I find that being apart of forums has the ability to ruin gameplay. Take YOU for instance .. you could be out playing one of those extrodinary games you mentioned having fun, yet here you are argueing with me over a game that you don't even play anymore and have no intentions on playing which is rather pointless imo - unless of course you are having fun which I guess you must be. Not to mention getting all uptight about it and bent outta shape, I mean really is it worth it? I wouldn't think so.
Btw, I wouldn't meet you in any of those games you listed because I really don't have enough respect for you to want to do so. (And besides I've played EQ, Saga Ryzom (trial which wasn't the game for me), haven't played AO though, maybe someday I will).
Second off, I don't compare games becuase I believe its pointless. I try the game, and either like it and play it or I don't regardless of what anyone says which is why I recommend for others to do the same. So I don't have to PROVE anything to anyone, especially not someone like you who has made up his/her mind already and dosen't really care to hear what I have to say other then to continue to belittle someone or intice a flame. However, if there is anyone who is truly interested in the game, I would be more then happy to discuss the pro's and con's of it. Imagine that ....
Hows that for a long winded meaningless post .. ya want another one, I got some time to spare tonight?
I am not 1 of those 3 persons, but heck, this is the type of stuff I enjoy to do...so here I goes...trying to defend a game I choose not to play.
Better than...
DAoC: 1- Raiding enforcement. 2- Solo capability. 3- Combat graphics. 4- The ease to group all your friends who play the game (less servers, so less likely that they are split on 3 differents servers). 5- Dragons! 6- Tradeskills, 7- Gear 8- Travel, 9- PvP enforcement (except for 1 server now, so not valid anymore, yet was a point for a long time). Now all in all, I think DAoC could be better since...1- UI 2- Friendlier approach to figure the game out 3- Easier interactions 4- More usefull options (stick, lists,looting...) anyway, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to me, HZ beat DAoC...but rationnally, DAoC is a classic...so...
EQ: Hmmmmy heart is not at it, I am sure I could find reasons...but...I mean...come on...it is EQ! I can't blast EQ for no good reason! Oh, I found a reason why HZ beat EQ...it is...Johny! *tease and mess around* Niak niak niak! Honestly, EQ IS the MMO reference, even Blizzard compare themselves to it...even now!
EQ2: Without repeating elements valid for DAoC as well...1- Computer requirements. 2- Class signifiance and variation. 3- Individuality. 4- Freedom. 5- Community....but in all honesty, EQ2 is a pretty nice game...for my Grandma!
SoR: 1- Tradeskills, althought significantly developped in both, in SoR they are just generic and quite simple without much refinement. 2- Class for grouping outmatch a skill system. 3- You dont get jumped by those nasty Gingos! 4- Gear is relevant in HZ, unlike SoR where you always need to replace and repair it endlessly. All in all, I would say it is nearly a tie.
AO: Sorry, I cant talk about a game I don't really know.
WoW: Eh, I wont do it...I am tempted, but this game is below even the time taken to blast it!

EQ2's subscriptions have doubled in the last 3 months. They now have between 450 and 500 thousand subscribers. If you think it's declining you're on crack. It's the best fantasy game out there right now, but if I didn't have EQ2, I would still be playing Horizons. There's just a ton of stuff to do and I enjoy the game and community.
Here's to hoping you find a game you like Zvorak and can stop ragging on games that you don't.
EDIT: spelling
That post was aimed at you and Khoal, your rebuttle and quotes are moot. I can see you are a member since 7/9/05.
All right, this is just ridiculous. I play the game, it's fine. But throwing around subscription numbers when Sony doesn't release them to the public is inane. Cite a source that's proveable or stop talking about subscription #s. Saying it doesn't make it so, unless you can back up your claim.
Also, folks, namely SOE fans, said it had 300-400k in July. If we believe the fans, then having 450k-500k does NOT represent a "doubling" in three months, either. This is why throwing around numbers is so utterly pointless -- it never goes anywhere good, no one cites any documentation to support their assertion about the numbers, and ultimately, whatever the subscription numbers are has ZERO bearing on the quality of the game. If it did, WoW would be the best -- and it most certainly is not that.
Thanks for saying that... I'm sick of pointing out the obvious.
All you have to do is be an active memeber of the EQ2 community for over a year to see or notice numbers or dwindleing. Another hint might be the numerious "I'm leaving". "I have enough" style of posts plaqueing the SOE boards. Also, if your were ever cognicant you'd also notice several of the uber names and guilds on your server is deminishing. There ALOT of younger leveled players that I am sure the Free Trial has brought in but the fact SOE has revasmped it cancelation page with a very lenghty & nice cancelation questionaire is proof their serious about retention.
I myself cancel 3 EQ2 accounts and am on a rampage trying all the free trials looking for something that "sparks" my interest even though i have already bought and tried those games in the past. I guess on a whole the MMORPG market is in a recession due to the lack of quality games produced in the last few years. WoW was fun, but too east... etc.
I hope and wish the HZ fans luck here... farewell
-Zvorak
The loss of Dave Allen was a mortal blow to Horizons from which it never recovered.
It only serves now to prove that business management is incapable of providing fun game play on any level, especially management that wrested authority from the creative director and art director, and installed politicians in their place.
A conspiracy can be identified as having two very important characteristics. One, all conspiracy is evil. This conclusion is determined by the fact that if it were not evil, it would have been done openly and not in secret. The second characteristic is that it is implemented by cowards for the same reason, those unwilling to confront the target face to face. Therefore, when a conspiracy takes place, those who perpetrate it do so from the shadows in fear of being discovered, and confronted.
And these are not people with a clear positive vision. They are parasites.
The resulting product in this case is also parasitic. It fails to go away to the sewers when it really should, and sucks the life and money out of those that sit on this toilet seat.
The game was fun to level 5, after which finding fun things to do could literally take days of travel.

That was really cool of you to say Zvorak and much appreciated .. goodluck to you also.
Now onto another note ... although I haven't tried it yet, I was thinking EQ2 would be a fairly cool game from what I have read and the little I've seen of it so far (played some EQ in the past). The, type of game with features that would appeal to my game play and style, although it appears many are unhappy with it. I'm probably going to give it a whirl here sometime soon anyways, but its still cool hearing everyones take on it.

If you don't care about flashy graphics, EQ1 is still a much better game to play. There is so much to do that I wouldn't know where to begin, and the wide-open combat system is still the finest of all MMOs to-date.

I liked the community. Almost everyone who plays the game loves the game, and that shows when you're a newbie (or just a slow learner like me). You can run up to pretty much anyone and ask a question you probably should already know the answer to and get a sane, helpful response. Horizons isn't a world populated by player-haters, because they all left years ago. Horizons doesn't have the flashiest graphics and the engine itself isn't as good as games that were written three years after (e.g. today), but it holds it own in many aspects. The interface for purchasing and trading items is one of the most comprehensive and well layed out I've seen in a game, with multiple visual modes and layout styles and filters, you can quickly filter out many items you aren't considering, whereas many other games simply list or show icons representing items, forcing you to examine them manually. The world itself changes over time, either as new continents or islands appear, or as parts get consumed or released by the "aegis". It's a new experience to run around a whole town that used be infested by giant glowing trees and vines and nasty mobs, finding things.
Horizons now falls down because of it's lack of numbers. Many featutres often talked about simply haven't made it into the game, two years down the track. This is partly because the company who originally owned it were headed for bankruptcy until another company stepped in, with ramifications on how the game was developed and progressed. In the early days, "events" would happen on a regular basis, such as portals to new islands being discovered, and with it new vast challenges that required the cooperation of hundreds of people. There were attacks on towns which brought nearly everyone in the game world to aid, which at the time led to severe lag problems. I have screenshots from such an attack where the whole landscape is swarming with a hundred players - really amazing to see so many people in one spot in such a game. But it was several months in before the lag and combat queue issues were resolved, and by that time the subscriber numbers were falling (according to mmogchart.com). Even now, dragon lairs - promised for 2 years now - are only just being demonstrated. The events we once knew tht brought people together seem to be no more. There is a distinct lack of mob models - if I see another differently-skinned golem pretending to be a completely different mob I'll explode! Another problem is the economy. I used to be able to purchanse all I need, but now all the consigners and resellers stock virtually nothing. I have to deal directly with players by asking over a chat channel. I feel this breaks the paradigm and makes the economy suffer.
I subscribed for the first 12 months, then quit. Now, 9 months after that I've rejoined and found the whole world has changed. No longer can I go to the familiar old battleground because the world has changed. It's different experience now. Same graphics, same music, same engine, but a different dynamic. Better? To early to say.
Forum signatures are stupid and annoying. I've turned mine off.
It still is really bad. Some folks like it because they have many levels, many gold, and an uber plot.
They are in love with their uberness, not the game.
NimK
actually, yeah, I'll agree with that. Many uber players, many of them (especially dragons) have been dazed by a lust for power and "uberness".
Don't know about many gold. I've never seen a gold. I can imagine that high leverl players could get that but for low levels money can be particular difficult to come by.
I have an uber plot. I bought it for 1c. I have no idea why I own it - I can't customise it or anything. Just build and , well, then it's built and it serves no further purpose.
Forum signatures are stupid and annoying. I've turned mine off.
I did not enjoy this game.
yes and the rest went into a few peoples pockets.
Very sad.
I played this game at first when it was released and yes it was a disaster and yes i did quite after a month
but after playn several other games (being banned from a few) i decided to go back and try it agian.
honestly its not the greatest game, its not the best looking game, its not the greatest for older computers,
but i do have a good computer and get about 25 - 30 fps even in the larger city of tazoon, what is great about the game though is the story, the crafting, the wide veriaty of classes, and the community ( there might not be as many people now but the people that are here now are friendly and helpfull for the most part)
the game still has some beuttiful sites to explore, and very nice buildings if you have your settings pumped up.
i feel this game is for a older group that is looking for a casual game to play and meet a few people or if you are young pick up a second game so you dont get burned on it (me right now im also playn Auto Assualt and Legend of Mir 3.
this game is just a good example of promising what you cant offer if the game was realsed with the features that was promised it would have been a contender, but now it will just be a game for a small group of fans ( small compared to some of the more popular games)
but if a game you can spend a lot of time on and be a impact on the community is what your looking for then this is for you
if you want the prettiest game or most popular game go else where and find you game but dont bash people because they enjoy a game you dont
Horizons is not about dragons - certainly not Dec. 2003, the content being "added" now is long overdue.
Horizons is about multiclassing to build an optimal combat (or crafting) character (or group) and having fun in a land full of player conveniences. <-- non dragon character of course.
AE --> TulgAE has made significant changes, such as revamping the biped plot construction Oct. 2004 (after the server merge Sep. 2004), tier V/VI "added" content, and steps toward completing the "after thought" race called dragons. As David Bowman (DB) has admitted, Horizons was released a year too early, perhaps more than a year.
Their small staff is working on adding content (new and missing at release) and soon their quest editor will be finished for players to submit quests. Dragon lairs may actually be finished (or mostly) by December (2005, not 2004 as DB indicated Sep. 2004). And they are slowly improving the Evolution Engine (server/client).
Level 120 and 120/120/120/..... characters should be coming soon along with Ancient only content. Hz powergamers will just need to wait more.
