Well, this is the second time the servers have been taken down within 24 hours of eachother... I finally got the download finished though (after many failed attempts). Itching to check out the new Tir Na Nog. With the downloading situation going less than smooth, I really hope this makes Mythic rethink the digital distribution only method. I can't imagine how frustrated dial-up users are trying to download the 837 mb expansion pack.
Your thoughts?

Actually the Digital Download option was one of the most requested things we've had over the years. Some people had problems, others didn't. It was by no means a widespread thing. I had to download it at home and go through it all just like everyone else and I had no problems. I used the BitTorrent option, it took a lil while but I was getting good speeds and was by no means unreasonable for 800+ MB. Other people weren't so lucky.
Sure, there have been some hitches here and there and we've had to take the servers down a couple times now but I don't think it has been an unreasonable amount for an expansion launch/patch day. I am sorry for the problems but I can guarantee you that people here have been putting in some mad hours trying to get everything running as near to perfect as we can.

Thanks for the timely response, I'm not terribly upset, I'd just like alternatives. Maybe next time they can consider sending a little undecorated disc for $5 or something? I know if I were on dial-up, I'd much rather pay 5$ for a disc than tie up the phone line for 12 or so hours.

By contract we can't. We can't sell it in both manners. Well, what I mean is if we had a distributer selling them on disc this time around there is no way they would allow us to sell them digitally as well, would cut into their sales too much.
For people on dialup who simply can't download such a large file the expansion is also available as part of the new Epic bundled package which released the same day as Darkness Rising. It is a little more granted, but it is another option.

To be honest, alot of MMORPG's always have their list of problems on new expansion day, if anything, I appreciate the response in which Mythic try to deal with the bugs. Also, digital download has been the best thing for any MMORPG, I've always struggled getting retail copies of MMORPG games, unless I order them online. Digital distribution is a saint.
I'm not too worried about the servers going down a few times - software is something that is very hard to release bug free and a product as complex as DAoC is sure going to have it's share of issues. I appreciate that the developers at Mythic react quickly - I sure wouldn't want to be in their shoes when these major changes are being made available to the wider public.
I do want to make some suggestions about the digital distribution of the files though. I downloaded the files without issues using BitTorrent - it took more than 10 hours (I know others had better download times). I also promised to send my friends who are unfortunately stuck with dial-up a copy of the game on CD.
My request to Mythic: Next time you release something of this magnitude (>800 MB) digitally, please include an option for people to create a CD (or multiple CDs) for archiving and sharing. To distribute the 800+MB file on multiple CDs takes some effort with WinZip or a similar tool and isn't the best way, especially for the less computer literate members of your subscriber base.
I love the new graphics and the horses! Love the horse emotes too!!!
Still the best MMORPG out there - thanks for continuing to improve it!

We actually have a version of the download which is broken down into 8 pieces which will be going up soon. I know it is a little late but late is better than never right? Things have naturally been a bit hectic around here as I'm sure you can imagine.

I had no problems so far. I got home last night after my poker game, made money so I was happy. Started downloading while I showered, made something to eat, etc. Took a little over an hour to get it straight from Mythic, I didn't use the Bittorrent option. Caught up on the news as it finished downloading and installing. Then I went to bed. No problems, real smooth, it never failed or anything.
Haven't played it yet though since I went to bed, then to work, where I am now. Looking forward to seeing the new stuff once I get home.
Rant on.
But...WHY are mounts so damn expensive? Every friggin MMORPG out there uses mounts as a money sink. And it pisses me off. I mean, why? Back in the day, a horse cost some serious dough, but not nearly as much as the MMORPGs make em cost. I should retire from adventuring and open up a stable, if it gave me the option, I might just do that.
Mounts are mostly for show anyway, and a speed boost. But with portals that was moot. So they are basically for the cool factor...and cost out the ass. WTF?
Rant off.

Maybe...
You could have offer to play without the patch and patch AFTER the play session? (Like CoH did, but instead of making it automatic (which was a mistake), you put an option...do you want to play without the expension for tonight? and the player pick yes or no...me I rather download right away, but if I was on dial up, I would rather download while I sleep). Or allow partial download ahead of time (players still need to pay to activate it, but can download part of it ahead of time). Or both.
Anyway, it is usually cheaper in store than with download with Sony! *grin evilly*
