This is probably one of the hardest decisions that I have had to vote on.

First off, Dark Age of Camelot is probably one of my favorite games, Up there with ff7/8 and that Aladdin game for genesis, but I actually voted for WoW.

Considering that you want it to be noob friendly, they both qualify for that.

The thing that got me to suade to WoW was that you wanted to play for a long time. WoW is almost a year old now, so it is pretty fresh and has a decently sized community. The thing is about DAoC, there isn't many people playing nowadays. The server I now play on, which is the most populated, has about 2000 people on in peak hours, give or take some. This is going to be a problem if you are just starting, since you may not be able to find a group in the lower levels when you need one, so you might have to grind for a little bit instead of going to dungeons/instances.

If I were to choose, personally, I would go with DAoC, just because I believe it is the best MMORPG I have played up to date, and I have a lot of good memories on it. But from what you want, go with WoW.

The one thing I suggest to do is, though, take the 14 day trial of DAoC that is being advertised around MMORPG.com. If it doesnt suit you in that amount of time, then at least you didn't have to gamble the first month subscription on whether you would like it or not.

    Hope that helped.

well in Imo, i don't think the WoW community is very noob friendly at all... most of them seem to hate noobs ::::06::

    Im basing it on gameplay.

It is very easy to nail down the shortcuts and abilities, since they are laid out right in front of you.

As DAoC goes, it takes a while to get used to the interface, and not everything is explained.

i recently quit wow and started daoc for the first time, the server im on has about 2k-2500 at peak times(gareth). and i have no problems finding groups at all, hell most the time im dual boxing my merc/cleric and want to be left alone but get bombed with group invites.

imho if community means nothing to you and you just want to play a really sweet game....play wow

but if you want to make friends on a game and have the people act like they are more than 12 years old (also a very nice game)....play daoc...

I really can't comment on DAoC, because I've never played it. But I can tell you that WoW is well worth the investment. Inspite of what alot of people will tell you, WoW is a superfun game, though it does have some set backs. Its not a perfect game, but then again, no game is. Here's the ups and downs as I see them.

    Ups

    1) Rich lore which is very well incorporated into the game. WoW is just teaming with plot, colorful NPCs, and engaging quests. This is one of the most engaging fantasty worlds I've been exposed to, which allows for very emersive gameplay, especially if you're into roleplaying with others.

    2) A nice variety of races and classes to chose from. All the races and classes in WoW are well thought out, and really fun to play. Believe me, you'll end up wanting to try them all. The race cities and other important sites are simply stunning, and truly a pleasure to explore. The classes are diverse, each with their strengths and weaknesses, and all are very engaging. I think I've played every class in WoW, and there's been days when I simply couldn't decide which of my characters I would rather play.

    3) Wicked-awesome crafting system. You can pick two primary professions, from blacksmithing, engineering, tailoring, enchanting, herbalism, skinning, alchemy, mining and leatherworking (I think I got them all). They all produce useful items, which look great on your character and also provide a useful boosts to your stats. For those who like to make things, crafting becomes an obsession very quickly.

    4) Beautiful gear and mounts. People obssessivly chase after gear and mounts, not just because they provide stats boosts and the like, but also because you can see every piece of gear on your character, and the gear just looks awesome. A level 60 in epic gear is a sight to behold, they really look....godly. If you do decide to get WoW, do yourself a favor and go find a level 60 Warlock to look at. Believe me, you'll be like "oooh" and "aaaah".image

    5) Awesome PVP. I don't care what anybody says, the PVP in WoW is really, really fun. Avoid battlegrounds at all costs, stick to random town raids and the like. I've wasted entire weekends on PVP, and you will too.

    6) Instancing. Instancing is really, really fun with the right group of people. It takes alot of time and planning, but when you finish off a high level instance, the feeling of achievement is unmatchable.

There's more, but that's what I can tell you off the top of my head.

    Downs

    1) The Community. The community in WoW really sucks. Now, you will find sane, mature, and fun people in WoW, no question. Cling to them, add them to your friends list, form a guild, and never let go. Its the friends you make in this game that will keep you playing. The vast majority of players in WoW are either A) Whiny carebears who constantly demand nerfs/buffs or B)Vulgar ignorant 1337 kiddies who will do everything they can to ruin your game experience. To much contact with either will make you want to choke heads. Hot tip: turn off channel 1: general chat to preserve sanity and enhance gaming experience.

    2) Crappy Honor System + Battlegrounds. Waiting in qeue for battlegrounds will piss you off. Farming honor to gain rank will drive you nuts. Hot tip: The Honor System is really frickin broken, and only works for people who have 50 hours + a week to do nothing but farm honor in battlegrounds. Ignore the honor system, and you will be a much happier gamer.

    3) Lag in Ironforge. Is a frickin downer, period. If you get the game, you'll quickly figure out what I'm talking about.

I'm sure there's more, but again, this is off the top of my head.

Overall, WoW is a great game. The only reason I quite was burnout. After 20 to 30 hours a week of WoW for 9 months, I got sick and tired of the game. But then again, I experienced burnout with other games as well, most notably, Anarchy Online. I still highly recommend this game though, probably the best MMORPG out there.image

I hate to vote on this one because DAoC and WoW are my all time 2 favorite mmo's. To be quite honest you cant go wrong going either way.

WoW wins on the Noob friendly vote ( I assume you mean the game rather than the comunity ). In fact WoW is friendlier in all aspects as it is so easy.
They score the same on the Goals vote. Both of them will give you plenty of targets to aim for, be they in items, crafting or exploration.
DAoC wins the Depth and Length of potential play time votes. As much as I enjoy WoW, it dosn't come close to the depth of DAoC.
I played DAoC for 18 months solid before ( forcing ) myself to take a break. After 2 months of WoW I was already looking for something new.

I would say DAoC, but, it is old and clunky and will take a serious investment of time and effort to create a really usefull RvR character. ::::31::::::31::

My sentiments exactly. WoW's controls are so easy that you can pretty much jump right in and start playing without any sort of tutorial. DAoC's graphics are a bit dated but the whole RvR thing just makes it shine.

    Really touch decision.

I played wow and went back to DAOC and Im playing on the Gareth(classic server) There are tons of people to group with.

WoW is definitely noob friendly and the crafting of wow is a bit more interesting--(engineering especially) but DAOC has easily the best PvP of any MMORPG. So it really comes down to what you want in a game. Long term I would shoot for DAOC as it takes a bit longer to get into but the game is much more enjoyable for a longer period of time. Alot of people get burnt out on wow really really quick.

Curious too--How many mmos have you played? If WoW is one of your first Id push you that direction. But if youve played many-- daoc for you. IMO WoW hooks the unexperienced mmo'ers longer than the people who know what they like in a mmo.

If you want the pvp of DAOC without having to do tedious tasks of getting elite weapons and gear (artifacts) I would suggest you go to the new and very popular Classic servers. There its a much shorter journey to being "pimped out" for pvp. As far as it being old and clunky, well its had some revamps here lately with an upgraded graphics system and for leveling its faster now that it ever was with the addition of Task Dungeons (instanced dungeons).

I've been playing DAoC for over a year, loved it at first, but once you get to RVR you will find huge class imbalances.  The class imbalances I've been able to deal with, (just means solo'ing is completely out of the question depending on what Realm you play, unless ofcourse you like to die alot) what got me to decide to sell my accounts is the cheating.  First with Radar, (I had a stealth toon which was rendered useless because of this, so I roled a Sorcerer) and now they are cheating using Lags in windowed mode.  The lags thing means you have to stand there while someone slices you up.  The makers of DAoC are IMO very commited to putting a stop to cheating, however, the cheating combined with class imbalance was enough for me...I don't feel like going through the trouble of roling another toon in another realm, grown tired of PVE...played Cats to death :(

I don't think I'm going to go with WoW, the game seems nice but the style of graphics, pastel colors fairyland toons, etc..., doesn't appeal to me.

I think I'm going to wait until Dark and Light and give that a try...hope I have'nt offended any hardcores on either side, certainly wasn't my intention, guess I'm kinda bumbed cause I'm between games ATM, I may just give WoW a try after all..
