Xenonauts

After playing this new "XCOM" for about a dozen hours, I won't go into... reviewing it, instead I'll bring something completely different to the community.

Xenonauts is the true spiritual successor for the old, original X-COM -series.

Direct quote from wikipedia:

It has been confirmed that the game will retain the fundamental mechanics of the early X-COM games, in this case considered to be a real-time global air control and strategic management / research component of the game, coupled with turn-based ground combat where the player controls a squad of soldiers and vehicles against the alien forces on tactical scale. Soldiers will develop their attributes through combat experience, and it has been confirmed (and demonstrated) that terrain in the ground combat maps will be destructible.[5]

Features advertised by Goldhawk as "enhancements" to the original X-COM model include the following (although many have appeared in other spiritual successors):[6][7]

  • An improved pausable real-time air combat model that allows combat between up to three aircraft/UFOs on each side.
  • Soldier equipment loadouts being saved between missions and the ability to change the weapon loadouts of ground vehicles.
  • The starting position of infantry and vehicles can be arranged inside the dropship (at first a troop transport helicopter).
  • The inclusion of a directional cover system in the ground combat.
  • Friendly local military and law enforcement NPCs present in ground combat.
  • Alternate victory conditions for ground combat missions (rather than just simply eliminating all alien forces).

Personal opinion: Xenonauts is almost -divine-. Even in it's current Alpha stage, it works wonders and has unbelievable depth. Of course I haven't got far with it yet, so can't go into details concerning research/workshop etc. But -if- you are looking for something to take you back in time, or just want something deeper and more tactical, do give Xenonauts a good try. They have a free "demo" available on their Kickstarter page, but if you pre-order it, you get the latest version everytime it is updated.

Plenty of info concerning the game can be found from youtube!

PS. The atmosphere/gameplay mechanics of the game might not be "welcomed" by the newer members of our community, but those, like I - who grew up with the old X-COM and Jagged Alliance games will certainly enjoy this trip down the memorylane.

We?re all dead, just say it.
