"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

Perpetuum is not F2P I think
Ryzom is a nice (and a bit old) SandBox game it is available for win, lin and mac and recently it rebooted its servers, it is not set in Space, but I think it is worth a try, it is free for 125 out of 250 lvl per skill (you can develop whatever skill you like fight, magic, harvest or crafting)
http://www.ryzom.com/en/
Some of the Games in the list I posted can be characterised as SandBox as well, but I am not sure about whom exactly, since EVE is the only one that Advertising itself as a SandBox that much..
I forgot to mention Black Prophecy Nexus Conflict, But I suppose you will already know about that, right?
http://nexusconflict.gamigo.com/en/
I suppose youa re right, I searched for the term "MMO" in their main page and nothing came out, so you are probably right
Still, if it is mostly Single player, I think that 2M goal for funds is a bit too much (Divine Space for example has a goal of 10,000 and it is about to lunch for almost any platform there is out there, and "The EpicSpace MMO" claims to be the largest MMO universe created and its goel is just 20k for better Hardware to support a largest player base..)
I forgot to mention Infinity (if it ever comes out :-o)
http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=33
PS: I hope that Star Conflict would be nice (is the only one that close to EVE anailable right now..), I am patching right now, I prefer the eve's control system but most space mmorpg use to cockpit view..
Shit, I just saw a gameplay video, it ia like Black Prophecy's control.. :-(
{
The "Divine Space" and I think the "Epic Space Game" as well have point and click control, I checked it :-)
}
And of course then there is Star Trek online wich became F2P but I am not sure how good is its PVP
http://sto.perfectworld.com/
SWTOR is F2P 'till lvl15 now BTW
http://www.swtor.com/
Also there was much discussion about "Celetania" in Ubuntu forum around 2009 but now the game is closed, not even its web site exists any more..
I just played the "Epic Space Game", it does not need to contribute, it just could not click on the password field, any way, the game is a bit odd in my opinion and it is 2D actually.. :-((((
Star Citizen is not a traditional MMO and isn't marketed as such, but its running on the same networking principles as EVE online is.
I.e. the game is multiplayer in a persistent online world, one shard, but instanced "battle instances" (like eve) that are however limited in scope to around ~100 players (instead of EVEs 4000 ship clusterfucks)
Features mentioned did include the purchase of real-estate like mining bases or an apartment on stations, so there is definitely a very persistent online element to it.
Chris also mentioned that you will be able to intercept other ships traveling and engage in piracy as well as trading online.
Essentially its two games, the single-player campaign in which you earn your citizenship, and the multiplayer persistent world in which you play with other people.
Plus the game has walking around in stations and ships with your avatar, so its already better than EVE.
Go to the star citizen forums here there is a gamespot video of Chris giving an in-depth talk about the game and how its going to work. Watch all of it, there is some good infor in the QA section at the end.
Think more like freelancer. Single player with multiplayer servers you can join I believe is what they are aiming for. Which would be great if it does allow modding as well. Players could build servers the way they want them.
R all space mmo complicated as EVE and controll awkward as Dark orbit? Any with fool-proof controls? And which of those games u mentioned here have decent population and open-world pvp?
Thanks for replies.

I cannot tell you anything about their pop since most of them have not released yet (Miner Wars or Divine Space) or they just been released (Star Conflict)
The "Epic Space Game" seems to me a bit like Dark Orbit but it claims to be an ever expanding, persistent sandbox..
Hi Akiira69,
Our recommendation would be Elite: Dangerous.
Here are the reasons why we think it would be a good fit for what you are looking for.
