Hi,
I am new to the forum. I played Gemstone for about two years. It's a text based game maybe some of you have played. I stoped about two years ago, but recently I decided that I wanted to try a game where you could actually see your character and the environment. Which one should I choose? There are so many out there and it seems that everyone has something negative to say about one or the other or both. I think that I am most interested in character development. Choices I can make concerning my character, his abilities, in other words which games offer the best customization (race, appearance, profession, skills, etc). Coming from a text based game a lot of this was somewhat limited, but in another sense it was unlimited because so much had to exist in the imagination.
Anyway, I would really appreciate any suggestions. I am looking for the game that is the most fun, offers the best character choices, has a reasonable degree of sophistication, but at the same time won't have an intimidating learning curve. Thanks again.
Ben

Well, appearance wise HANDS DOWN it's City of Heroes or City of Villains.
For Race selection, World of Warcraft has a good race selection with 8 races to choose from.
Profession wise, not too sure on which ones have a slot of classes.
Skill wise, Well I know Guild Wars has a ton of skills per profession, but it's not really an MMORPG, so don't know if you would want that.
Can't really find a game that is the best in all of those categories really.
Skill wise Saga of Ryzom should interest you. Over 11,000 levels in the various skill branches.
Its also a very nice game to boot

If you want to start off with a nice and easy MMORPG go with WoW ( http://www.blizzard.com/wow ) because it's easy for new MMORPG'ers
If you want to get a little more advanced go with either GuildWars ( www.guildwars.com )for 3D and for 2D either Ragnarok ( iro.ragnarokonline.com ) or Maple Story ( www.mapleglobal.com )
Even more advanced, Saga of Ryzom ( www.ryzom.com )and EVE Online ( www.eve-online.com ). Personally I like EVE, and MapleStory. But you know it's all up to you man.
BTW: WoW, SoR, and EVE are all P2P. GuildWars has a one time fee and then no payments after that. Maplestory is F2P (Free to play).
What i'd choose :
For an easy cartoonish but good game : World of warcraft
For a game with more challenge/longevity : Saga of Ryzom
have fun!
I'd start downloading free trials, myself. The "fun factor" of any MMO is really subjective, so the best way to decide if it's for you is to try it.
Games with trials:
Horizons: Quite a few races, decent avatar customization. Forgiving skill system.
Saga of Ryzom: Four races, if I remember correctly, decent avatar customization, very deep skill system (you can edit/create/modify all of your skills). No dungeons, limited quests, but interesting and very pretty.
Everquest 2: Trial of the Isle: (more like restricted shareware than a trial, but it gives you an idea.) Quite a few races, decent avatar customization.
EVE Online: This is entirely ship-based; you do have a character you can design, but it's a 2-D portrait. Steep learning curve, but very deep economy. Entirely skill-based, and skills improve over real time (whether you're online or not) rather than with use. Pretty, with excellent music.
Dark Age of Camelot: Designed around player-versus-player combat. Quite a few races and classes in the core game, even more with expansion packs. Fair-to-decent avatar customization. There are a number of quests to do, though leveling up can be very slow.
Games without trials:
City of Heroes: Superhero-based. A rather shallow game, but fun until you get tired of it. Character creation offers a ton of customization in outfits, but very little customization of facial features (only a handful of pre-rendered faces to choose from).
Star Wars Galaxies: The game with the best avatar customization, at least in terms of facial features and body type. Quite a few races to choose from. Skill-based to a degree. I have some serious issues with the game in its current state, but it might be worth checking out.
World of Warcraft: Quite a few races with average avatar customization. Class-based. Very high population (the largest of any MMO, past or present). Easy to learn. Lots of quests. Primarily solo-based from 1-59, then entirely group-based at 60.
There are quite a few I didn't list, primarily older titles, less successful titles, and games I haven't played. One thing you might consider would be subscribing to the Sony Online Entertainment all access pass, which allows you to play Everquest, Everquest 2, Star Wars Galaxies and the Matrix Online for around $24 USD per month. I'd give the other games with free trials a chance first, but the access pass would allow you to take a look at a few games for less than it would cost you to try them individually.
On Nov. 5th DnL comes out.... I want you to read up on Dark and Light (DnL). My suggestion to you is not to start a MMORPG that is out there. I find it best to start a new MMORPG right when it comes it... the race to the top lvl, everyone helping everyone jump totthe top, starting and formations of guilds and clans... Come on, you cant beat the feeling of starting a new MMORPG with thousands of other people and no one is maxed lvl. Feel the community building around you. . . Excitement of everyone finding out new things and places about the games.... Just pick a game that isn't out yet and wait for release... and Betas are good ides to
Just listen to what I have to say. . .
