I am one of them. I really do not get the appeal of GW2. It was supposed to deliver the greatest mmo experience to date and it gave us the same ole same ole...except prettier.
yeah, it's the same ol. Mind you, it is nice that you get your own resource nodes. And I do like that I can take part in a fight and still get rewards instead of waiting for the mob to respawn. And I do like that there are event chains that play out little stories. And I guess the cross profession combo's are cool. But yeah, it's just the same old mmo with some pretty graphics.
Combat is the same except you can dodge, which is rarely needed.
You can gather resources easier for a lackluster crafting mechanic.
Other games have rewards for jumping in a fight in progress.
Like I said...same ole same ole
other games also have players kill stealing, loot stealing, node stealing etc.
I haven't had someone steal my kill since... 2003?

Seriously, stop it GW2 fanboys, your making me hate you more then WoW fanboys. *cough* Sorry went off topic. Simply put: Lots of forum posts with Fanboy Vs Hater
3.) Ads: GW2 is quite dedicated to spamming adds on this website, as seen by the 2 banners it has up at all times. Those attract attention and as such people check it out.
4.) Rating: The must popular games will typically garnish the most attention. Gw2 being top easily generates more hits for being 'rated' the highest.
5.) New Game/f2p switch/expansion: Not really GW2 but more so if you want an example we can look at SWTOR. The F2P switch is a huge change for the game which makes a game people were originally "Why bother" so much more popular. Its essencially 2 parts where a game comes out it gets big popualrity and when it goes 'free to play' that it gains more attention.
Expect this to happen with TESO release as well for some time and other big name games. Chances are with the Rift expansion launch you will see that game gain a lot of attention as well again.
It could also be that there are quite a few people like me who each day check up on the game, going through various sites and fora.
Its just that I can't be arsed to get cought up in discussing the game with many of you because very few people around here are sensible. Why would we even have time to post? Most of us work for a living, have families,spouses,kids...cats?
Shock and horror, we visit the site but don't have enough time to defend why we play GW2.
Anyone else noticed that if you go on the main page and click the 'most popular' tab GW2 constantly has thousands and thousands more hits than any other game? I mean just today GW2 has 25k hits, with #2 being SW:TOR with 4700. Why the disparity? If you click week, month, etc.. it just grows wider and wider.
Well I think I figured it out. It's the trolls. The trolls 'love' this game. Not love it like I do.. but love to trash and bash and repeatedly post blithering nonsense that half the time only shows that they haven't played it. I'm not sure what it is about the game, but if the main page shows anything, its that simple fact. Trolls 'love' to bash GW2.
Question is why? Because it's so popular? Because it's so highly rated (I notice at least once a week it gets 'ratings bombed', but the funny thing is it just goes back up to 8.9/9 after a few days as more and more poeple try the game and rate it high. Maybe the trolls cant stand that the game is doing as well as it is, cant stand that servers are still packing in the folks day after day (even outside this amazing Halloween event).
So am I right or what? Everyone knows that MMORPG.com is MMOG troll central. The posts I see on this forum make me laugh how obvious the trolling is. While we might get the rare 'I have lost interest and here is why', most of the time it's full of crazy troll comments from people who haven't even played the game. It's so nice to be able to look into post history and just see how frothing at the mouth some trolls are about this game.
Anyway, back to the game for me. Gonna run the Mad King dungeon a few more times before I go to bed. It's a hell of a lot of fun.

I think this must be why people feel the combat is the same. You can play it like WoW, and you'll do ok, most of the time. but if you learn how much more there is to it, you can do a lot better than ok, and have a lot more fun, in the process.
Not just the action elements, but the combos, traits, weapon swapping, and upgrades, and the different ways all that can synergize, depending on how you customize it all.. It goes deeper than any other MMO I know of (not counting games like EVE that are just too different to compare)
I wonder if anyone's done a decent guide on GW2 combat. It did take me a while to realize that it wasn't just another tab-target MMO at all. I'm just not the sort to try to be that helpful, I guess. Way too much work..

When I'm playing the game, I'm there enjoying it. What I've never felt is the need to defend my enjoyment of a game on a forum. Forums are for complaining, crying, trolling. If GW2 was the industrial revolution - the Trolls would be lining up to throw their clogs ('Sabo') into ANets servers.
Likewise, when something changes, or threatens to change the feedstuff of an addict (we've all heared WoW called World of Warcrack right!?....) then the addicts panic, come out in cold sweats and wail to the world how it will end their very existence.
In the end, GW2 has a notable longevity problem - at least in my opinion. I also don't like Asurans and the 23rd century magictech associated with them....
.... but in terms of innvovation and 'doing what they said on the tin' ANet have done an very good job - not flawless of course - NOTHING ever is....
.... but better than most, and more innovative than ALL when looked at holistically.
Doesn't stop the 'druggies' getting the DT's though.
In fact there should be a new meaning for it as far as MMO's are concerned.

Oh I undoubtedly lost you at the point your personal opinion differed from mine.
However, to then call my opinion as defacto 'a crock' fits neatly into another post I made with the following equation.
A - personal experience of game
B - susceptibility to the standpoint of trolling/fanboi/hater posts
C - ability to seperate subjectivity from objectivity
Z - the degree to which personal bias is reported as fact
A x B = Z
C
You will note that there is no term for 'holistic intepretation' in the equation - I am sure you can see why....
If you want to critique my posts then back it up with something, or in fact it will be your posts which will more accurately be described as 'a crock'.

I see.
Yes I didn't add the necessary addition to the formula having taken it with the previous contextually limited reference in place.
So you will now see the necessary correction in the original post.
I am always happy to take logical cricism on the chin - and you are indeed correct to point out the potential for confusion over perceived bias.
However, your conclusion was incorrect - it was not my intention to merely direct the formula on this occassion to trolls - but to bias in general. I didn't accuse him of trolling - I had the term in the formula.
Asurans, magic tech, lack of specifically Guild focussed play content, the slightly too great an emphasis on 'popcorn and bubblegum' style fantasy and of course the few but significant longevity potholes in GW2 mean I will not be playing it long term.
I looked for an MMO home and didn't find it here - not because 'it's not an MMO' (the most pathetic arguement to date I have seen here), but because it fails to engage sufficiently in the long term 'sense of acheivement' department.
A great pity - and they may change it to suit. I don't know - and nobody else does really. However, they aren't going to take out the ridiculous borg-assimilated gremlins that are Asurans so I won't be here once ESO comes out.
That said - it is however generally a very good MMO from an objective standpoint (once you take out the 'but that's not what an MMO is to me, and I am a special snowflake' arguments). I am wearied of the unashamedly extreme bias of those trying to undermine what GW2 does well with their desperately narrow view and single-issue criticisms which they manage again and again to expand to the conclusion that the whole game is a steaming pile of ****.
This does apply to a significantly lesser degree to the most avid fans of the game - but the difference in scale and the desire to insult others in support of their argumenst does not compare favourably for the 'haters'.
They really do need to learn the basics of debate and to post without the playground hyperbole.

Anet got up from me.
Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language
It's true, I don't play the game (tried it, never liked it) and click on all the negative GW2 threads I see in the Current forum activity.
But I doubt there's so many of us. Most probably checkout screenshots etc.
You lost me at the "more innovative than all" part. What a crock.
Some of you are just so damn obvious lol!!
Okieee.... let's see. You are educating him on 'difference of opinion' and yet in your last reply you labelled others 'trolls' simply for having a different opinion about GW2?
Trolling can be pro OR con....
.... and whilst we are on opinion....
