Hey,
I have been playing DAoC for over a year now, before that, most games I played were Fantasy based, (you know roll a mage, fighter or cleric, etc). I've never played a Sci-Fi before, looks to me like EVE might be a good one to try.
I'm not crazy about downloading free trial versions, (usually loaded with spywares) so if you guys tell me this is a great game and the transition is a non issue I will go ahead, buy it, and see yas all space! Otherwise I may go with WoW.
Opinions appreciated...
Ken

I have never downloaded a free game trial that had spyware in it. Just download EVE and give it a try, you obviously have an interest in the game!
I used to play fantasy mmorpg's (still do from time to time) until a friend told me about EVE, the sound of a training system that is based on time and not grind was just too alluring I when I finaly started it up, it was beautiful. The graphics are top-notch with all the other major MMO's and offers so much more options than any other game on the market that it's now got me hooked for the past 12 months.
The entirety of the game mechanics are left up to the players to decide. All alliances, space ownership and development is delt by and fought over by players. The markets in deep space are entirely controlled by players; production, manufacturing, researching. Of course the GM's show up if ever there are problems and balancing issues to debate but for everyday business, it's really player driven.
Sure, I miss slaying the odd goblin with my rangers and mages from time to time but, when I think about the 25,000 goblins I need to kill to get that next level, I makes me smirk and turn back to my EVE client. EVE has no levels and entirely open skill systems. Any character can train any skill. Your starting attributes simply make your chracter more effective at learning certain skills than others.

The free trial is the exact same client as the normal game. Most free MMORPG trials use the real client since the access to the game can be controlled via a server account. As of yet I've never played an MMORPG that came embedded with spyware. Download it n' try it out.
I played DAoC for 3 years.
I tried so many MMO over the years it's sick.
EvE is the best one out there.
WoW is good also, but coming from DAoC the "thrill" of WOW lasted, 3months or so.
Give it a try.
I've never had a problem with going from one genre to the other. From AO to EQ to SWG to WoW (not really in that order, but you get the picture).
What exactly are your concerns about switching genre's though? Are you not sure you'll get the same satisfaction?
Think of it this way, if you can pick either a fantasy novel or a sci-fi novel and enjoy both, than you ought to not have any problems. Of course, I'm always of the mind of trying it out and giving it a shot. I've been very pleasently surprised a lot of times by doing this, and not just in gaming.

Thanks guys,
I am downloading the client tonight, from what you guys are saying I can't wait to get started.
See yas in space...and from what I've been reading, hopefully it won't be from the window of a pod

Yeah, no spyware here. I mean, it is a subscription game, so why would they.
I have downloaded and have been playing it for a few days now...so far I find this game incredibly addictive.
Thanks All

Worth a try. Some people like it, some people hate it. You'll never know till you try it.
And, point of fact:
I have NEVER played a trial of a commercial MMO that had spyware in it.
EVER
and I've played the trial version of every single commercial MMO on the market.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.
Sig image Pending
Still in: A couple Betas
Glad you gave it a try ~ hang in there with it and the rewards for commited longer term players are there.
Try tuning into Eve-radio.com as well it helps the game go by with some good tunes and lots of fun, competitions etc.
I also made the transition from games like DAoC and EQ2 and UO and even AO could be considered like them, and I'll probably never go back. Once you play EVE for a good time and actually get into the fact that the players matter in this game, all the other games just seem like cookie cutter "I killed a goblin" kind of games. Especially since everyone is in one universe, where players are friends with the devs and vice versa.
On a sidenote, check out www.eve-online.com the official website. Its the greatest game website I've ever seen. Tons of stuff to check out on there as well as the Player Guide which has a tutorial in it that explains the physics associated with turrets. Hope you enjoy.
