I think they don´t need player retention because the whole deal was about the pre-hype (constructed) and selling as many boxes as possible at launch, with a lot of media hype on top of that - I´d say mission accomplished.
No trial.. just lol. It´s a 60$ lifetime sub cat in the bag, and I guess they don´t even care if you leave after playing two hours, a week later or a month later
So, which big-name MMOs had free trials at launch?
I guess their quick cash grab scheme included hiring additional devs post-launch and developing huge updates, too? Such as the FREE Halloween content, 50+ FREE new dynamic events, a bunch of FREE mini dungeons and jumping puzzles and the upcoming FREE new area with a dungeon. Yeah, that totally sounds like a quick cash grab scheme.

Nope you have yet to link the source of your claim, until then you are just speculating.the_korrigan - 2 million (3.5 million by xmas)
Where is their source? It says at the bottom that their source is an NC Soft press release. Look up NC Soft press releases on their website and its not there.

i've seen that mentioned a few times in this thread. so i decided to google. and it is strange that i cannot find any news from NCSoft (or Arenanet) on this. All these game sites have reported the news but there is nothing offical stated from the company themsleves.

I know right? Its like somebody somewhere said 2 mil and Anet just went quiet. Letting it seem true. The only time someone does this is when its not haha. Like if it was lower than their actual number, they wouldve immediately shut that down.
Not that I dont believe it. But you know whats weird about that 2 million sold announcement? Anet never actually announced it. The closest they came was linking the guru claim on their facebook page. weird. Why wouldnt they make an official announcement themselves? They basically linked what a website claimed without confirming or denying it themselves. Maybe Im wrong and there is an official statement from anet saying yes they sold 2 mil, but I can only find 3rd party websites saying it with no source.

yea i couldnt find anything directly from them after a quick search but then again i wasnt trying very hard since it was late i was headed to bed XD
edit: hmm yeah cant find anything directly from them. only press releases i seem to find from september on ncsoft and arenanets websites for gw2 are about reopening sales(but never once mention the 2mil) and about the mac version
How many media stating NCsoft announced 2 million sales do you need?
IT NEEDS TO BE FROM THE MOUTH OF THE BEAST!!!!!!
The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true.
The game has probably sold around the 2 million mark. But only a fraction of that are still playing. I don't think it's going to see much more in terms of sales by the end of the year. It doesn't have that competitive longevity that GW1 did.

at GW1 release it was a very unique game in the market.. GW2 while is differn't enough imho than the rest of the themeparks is still at it's core a themepark which has been oversaturated in the past decade
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. Agreed. They should have made a sandbox instead. Ah, hindsight...
Um yeah none of those articles have a source link from ncsoft or anet .... Weird
finally found one that seemingly put the press release in the article but there is still no link to ncsoft or arenanet and cant find it on their sites so maybe it got taken down for some reason. and for some reason on gw2's site, everytime i try to check farther back than the 1st page in the news section i get a 404 error
Guild Wars® 2 Sales Break Two Million Units Critically-acclaimed online RPG quickly surpasses milestone after re-opening sales NCsoft®, the world’s premier publisher and developer of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) and ArenaNet, developer of the renowned Guild Wars franchise, has announced that the chart-topping MMO Guild Wars 2 has sold more than two million units. Despite temporarily halting first-party sales and replenishing retail stores to maintain an optimal player experience, Guild Wars 2 surpassed the two million sales milestone shortly after turning sales back on.
Guild Wars 2, which launched just over two weeks ago, has captured the imagination of the gaming community around the world. With peak concurrency regularly exceeding 400,000 players and first week sales that placed it at the top of the All Formats charts across ten European territories, it’s clear that demand for the game remains high.
“Reactions from around the world justified the time and care we put into developing Guild Wars 2 and making it into the game it is today”, said Mike O’Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet. “And this is only the beginning. We’re continually fine-tuning the game to deliver the polished experience that our players expect, and we’re already working on new adventures and experiences to introduce into this truly dynamic online world.”

edit: just so people know, it wouldn't suprise me if they actually sold more than 2mil, im just using this as a fun hunt on a boring sunday

You won't find it on the official site because there was never an official post made there. What you pasted was the press release from a 3rd party site.
At the top of the page it gives the website where the " press release " was made. I guess it all depends if you trust this as an official source or not.

They all say "NCSoft announced". And how did NCSoft announced? By sending an email to these media sites.
Same method they used to announce 1 million pre-purchases and 400K concurrent users.
Media outlets won't be saying "NCSoft announced" if NCSoft didn't.
They announced it in a private email now? Even though most sites claim it was a press release from ncsoft? Go to the press release section of ncsoft's website, its not there. Nor is it on anet's news on their main site. Just sayin it sounds fishy hehe and im bored and this is fun trying to find the source.

They announced it using news sites/news agencies.
Hardly private.
There are several ways of announcing stuff, one is using their own website or social networks, other is having an interview, other is sending a press release to the media.
That is what they did - they sent a press release to these news sites. The news site published it.
They did exactly the same with the 1 million pre-purchases and 400K concurrent users.
"A press release, news release, media release, press statement or video release is a written or recorded communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something ostensibly newsworthy. Typically, they are mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to assignment editors at newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations, or television networks."

Does our asian brothers ans sisters have thei translated GW2 version already ? So far i think its safe to say that it sold over 3 million copy's.
Anet is releasing free contend <---- imagen that free contend So business is going good i asume otherwise it would have been a 5 dollar / euro package or something like that.
No1 knows how much boxes are sold, but i bet m left hand it sure sold more then 3 mill.
So all those Black Lion Chest keys that players bought at the Halloween event were free? Arenanet are giving away all those gems for ingame gold? how about all the bag space and other CS items that players are buying are they free as well? You pay for new content in an ongoing online game whether its is a sub or cash shop its not free no matter how much Mike O'Brien says it is.
I trade my gold for gems, so everything I've gotten from the shop has been free
